Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: Tobacco is a powerful, sacred herb used for prayer. It represents all aspects of creation. Smoke from burning tobacco is visible prayer - prayers being carried to the Creator.

The bowl of the pipe is typically pipestone and represents Mother Earth (I have been taught)
The stem, often carved from basswood symbolizes the people.

In a pipe ceremony, the bowl, stem, tobacco will be smudged with burning sage before being assembled. Prayers are said with the tobacco as it is being placed in the bowl. Before lighting, the pipe is offered to the four directions, Father Sky and Mother Earth.

Pipe ceremonies can be used to open conferences, meetings and assemblies as well as for, healing and other ceremonies and individual prayer.

When used to convene meetings, the ceremony is about welcoming others and seeking spiritual guidance and direction in the ensuing discussions; for coming together in a good way and will also ask for a safe journey home for the participants.

Subject: Upcoming changes to residential internet

Submitter:
Erin S Voss, Student and Public Computing Co-Manager, Information Technology

Message: Beginning Monday, November 27, Student Computing will activate additional features of the Clean Access agent. Currently, the Clean Access agent is only being used to register computers on the Augsburg network. The features being activated will assist students in making sure their own personal computers are protected against viruses, and that all security updates are in place.

Specifically, the software will check to see if your computer has a recognized anti-virus program installed and up-to-date, and if the appropriate Windows updates and security patches have been installed (see note below). A list of recognized anti-virus programs is available at http://www.augsburg.edu/stucomp/resnet/CA_antivirus.html . The Clean Access agent will notify you of any items that need your attention.

It is important to note that the Clean Access agent will only be *checking* for anti-virus and Windows Updates at this time. Enforcement of the anti-virus and Windows Updates requirements will begin on Monday, January 8th. At that time, any Windows computer that does not meet these requirements will have restricted internet access in the residence halls until all security requirements are met. It is our hope that by starting the checking and notification process six weeks prior to the enforcement period that all students will have adequate time to make any required updates or changes.

--------------

NOTE: In order to download all necessary security updates and patches via Windows Update, Microsoft requires that a genuine copy of the Windows operating system be installed on your computer.

We encourage you to use the Windows Validation tool found at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx as soon as possible to check to see if your copy of Windows is genuine.

If you discover that your copy of Windows is NOT genuine, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#Question5Label and follow the suggestions listed there. Student Computing will not be able to provide you with a valid license key!

---------------

Any and all questions and comments can be sent to Student Computing via e-mail to stucomp@augsburg.edu or you can contact the Student Computing Desk at 612.330.1400.
