Subject: CTL Night at the Theatre

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: A few tickets remain for Faculty and Staff for the November 11 performance of "Hedda Gabler" by Henrik Ibsen, directed by Martha Johnson. Subject: NA Heritage Month - Did You Know?

Submitter:
Cindy G Peterson, Director, American Indian Student Services

Message: That for many Native communities within the US there is a resurgence of language revitalization. Language is vital to the culture. With the dying of the elders many of the languages were on the verge of disappearing and being lost forever. Today the Native languages are being actively taught in many communities. Wish the language revitalization comes pride in culture.

Augsburg offers two semesters of Beginning Ojibwe the language of the Anishinaabe.

Many place names in Minnesota are Native words. Examples: Chaska, Shakopee, Chanhassen, Mahnomen, Wauben, Winona, Mississippi, Wabasha. Can you name others? Do you know what languages these place names come from?

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

We now know that the dates are the Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon leading into Spring Break, 16-17 March. The retreat is at the luxe conference center in nearby Chaska. We can accommodate 20-30 faculty and staff.

Cormac McCarthy's short, well-reviewed apocalyptic novel "The Road" is one possible centerpiece of the retreat, around which to bring together colleagues with interests in sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, and professional studies. Let me know what you think, what other ideas and interests you have, and if you'd like to help (if you've already expressed an interest in helping and can stay on board, you don't need volunteer again). I'd also love to know whether you plan to attend, now that we know the dates.

Above all, please encourage your colleagues to attend. Whether you're a newcomer or an old-timer like me, the retreat is a great way to meet colleagues across campus and to reconnect with old friends. The food and company and talk will be great.

Subject: NEH Seminar Presentation by Dr. Brad Holt, Friday

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

St. Francis of Assisi in the Thirteenth Century: A Life in Art and Text
Friday, Nov. 10, 3:30 p.m. in the Marshall Room. Refreshments served.

Francis is one of the best known saints in Christian history, but he is often reduced to a garden ornament. This presentation will give a fuller picture of the life and vocational struggles of the Patron Saint of Ecology and founder of the Franciscan Orders. Getting to the "historical Francis" is a similar problem to that of the "historical Jesus," and Francis is often understood to be that disciple of Jesus who most closely followed Jesus' footsteps. Francis lived a carefree life both before and after the dramatic changes in his life. His example is a challenge to our day in ecology, interfaith relations, and personal spirituality.

Dr. Brad Holt, Professor of Religion, participated in a National Endowment of the Humanities Seminar in the summer of 2006, devoted to an interdisciplinary study of Francis. The group of 15 professors stayed in Rome for one week, Siena three weeks, and Assisi for two, each pursuing different projects with regard to Francis, and discussing the earliest texts and paintings.
