Subject: Alumni Mentoring for Business Students

Submitter:
Ross Murray, Campus Ministry Associate; Tutoring Services Coordinator; , Campus Ministry and Academic Skills Office

Message: The Alumni Mentoring Program is especially looking for students interested in business, MIS, accounting, or finance.

The Alumni Mentoring Program is an opportunity for students to connect and build relationships with Augsburg alumni and wrestle with questions surrounding vocation. “Vocation” may mean job-related specifics but also refers to the larger sense of purpose in life.

Sophomores and up from across the student body are encouraged to participate. Teams are assigned together by major/discipline/interest area, ideally with three students, two alumni, and a faculty or staff person, who will serve as a facilitator. For example, business students will be on a team with business people working in the community and be facilitated by a member of the business faculty.

The program holds four dinners for all participants throughout the year. The dates for the 2006-2007 academic year are October 12, November 16, February 15, and March 29. They are all Thursday evenings. Dinner starts at 5:30, program starts at 6:15, and then teams will process the program, make plans for future outings, etc. The evening will be over by 7:30.

In addition to the four dinners, teams are encouraged to have various "vocational outings” throughout the year. Each team is given $250 for expenses related to these outings. These outings can include visits to alumni workplaces, coming on campus for an event or forum, or just dinner together as a team. The outings are planned by the team so they will be relevant. There is a possibility that students will be involved in these on-campus events, so the team can go to support the student in their endeavor.

Part of the purpose is for students to have conversations with alumni who are out there doing things in a given field. Alumni are also asking the same vocational questions that students are, only later in life. Alumni are also keenly interested in what is going on at Augsburg, so students can represent a certain point of view about Augsburg College.

Questions? Call Ross Murray at x1151 or email murray@augsburg.edu.

Monday, Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel

Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Pascaul Venter named MIAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week and to D3Kicks.com Team of the Week for second week in a row

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/092606venter.html

MINNEAPOLIS (9/26/06) -- For the second week in a row, Augsburg College goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (So., Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday.

In addition, Venter was also named for the second week in a row to the D3Kicks.com Team of the Week, a listing of the top individual players from the previous week in NCAA Division III soccer across the country.

Venter, who has played all but 51:37 of Augsburg's 959:57 minutes in goal so far this season, continues to be a key element of one of the most successful starts to a season in the history of the Auggies' men's soccer program. Augsburg stands at 8-0-2 overall and 2-0-2 in MIAC play, having yet to give up a goal this season. Augsburg, which has outscored its opponents by a 19-0 margin so far this season, is the only program in NCAA Division III men's soccer to be both unbeaten and unscored upon at this point of the season.

After recording four saves in a 3-0 nonconference win at St. Scholastica on Wednesday, Venter claimed double-digit shutouts in two key conference games over the weekend -- a career-high 13 saves in a 0-0, double-overtime draw at Carleton on Saturday, and 10 saves in a 1-0, double-overtime victory at defending MIAC playoff champion St. John's on Sunday.

Venter, who now has nine shutouts this season, has passed Augsburg Athletic Hall of Famer Mark Anderson for the school's single-season shutout record. Anderson recorded eight shutouts in 1980. Venter's 10 career shutouts are second all-time in school history; Anderson recorded a school-record 16 shutouts from 1978-80.

Venter's personal shutout streak is now at 1,079:31 (908:20 this season and 171:11 from last season), now the third-longest individual goalkeeper shutout streak in NCAA Division III history. Peter Boyer of Drew (N.J.) holds the record of 1,428:00, set in 2003, while Terry Leiendecker of St. John's is second with 1,110:00, set in 1982.

As a team, Augsburg's shutout streak has now reached 1,089:57 -- including 12 straight shutouts and 12:29 of a 13th game dating to last year. Augsburg has now not surrendered a goal in 959:57 this season. Augsburg's 12 straight shutouts are now the fourth-longest consecutive shutout streak in NCAA Division III history. The record, 17, was set by Drew (N.J.) from Sept. 20, 2003 to Nov. 22, 2003. St. John's (1982) and Muhlenberg (Pa., 1998) had 13 consecutive shutouts. The NCAA Division I record is 11, set by Furman (S.C.) in 2002, while the Division II record is 12, set by Wisconsin-Parkside in 1989.

For the first time since the Auggies began playing NCAA Division III soccer in the mid-1980s, the Auggies have been ranked regionally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region rankings, standing seventh in this week's listing. The Auggies also received votes in this week's D3Kicks.com Top 25 national poll.

Augsburg returns to action with a key conference home game on Friday (9/29) at 7:30 p.m., hosting perennial power Macalester at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. On Sunday (10/1) at 1 p.m., the Auggies have a nonconference road game at Buena Vista (Iowa).
