Subject: A Live Discussion on Virtual Discussions

Submitter:
Tandyn Scott Krenz, Liaison for Computing, Academic, Information Technology

Message: Please join a face-to-face roundtable discussion on fostering effective discussions both in the traditional classroom and utilizing the Moodle learning environment. Our moderators will be Anne Kaufman, Department of Education, and Mary Lowe, Department of Religion. Professor Kaufman will provide insights into effective classroom discussions while Professor Lowe shares her experiences and tips for generating good discussions using Moodle as an extension of classroom discussions. This event will be today, Sept. 27, from 3- 4 p.m. in room 301 Lindell Library. Sponsored by the Center for Teaching and Learning and Information Technology.

Subject: The Future Auggies: Reserve October 10

Submitter:
Joan L Griffin, Professor, English

Message:

The Diversity/Global Awareness Collaborative invites all faculty and staff to attend a presentation by Tom Gillaspy, State Demographer, and Tom Stinson, State Economist, on Tuesday, October 10 at 5:45 p.m. in the Marshall Room. Food and drinks will be served in the student art gallery preceding the event, beginning at 5 p.m.
Please r.s.v.p. to Emiliano Chagil (chagil@augsburg.edu)

As we develop a model of diversity and global awareness infusion in the AugCore Curriculum and our majors, it will be helpful to know who our students are and who they will be next year, in five years, in ten years . . . Gillaspy and Stinson will provide us with the big picture of what the demography and economics of Minnesota mean for higher education in Minnesota. Following their presentation. Julie Olson and the Enrollment Management Office will tell us what this means for Augsburg—who our students are likely to be.

This will be the first in a series of presentations, workshops and discussions on “infusing diversity and global awareness in the curriculum” sponsored by the Diversity & Global Awareness Collaborative throughout the year.

Subject: Douglas John Hall - next Monday and Tuesday

Submitter:
John Knight, Associate Director, Center for Faith and Learning

Message: "The notorious anti-intellectualism of most Christian denominations in Canada and the USA is in large measure, I think, a defense mechanism. Most churchfolk want comfort, security, serenity—not truth. And they would rather have a predictable (even a mind-numbing) kind of familiar 'spirituality' than theologically-perceptive sermons and prayers that start the mind ticking and keep insisting that there is another whole way of going about the business of living." Douglas John Hall - 2003

Interested in hearing more from and being challenged by one of today's most thoughtful theologians? Free opportunities on campus next Monday and Tuesday.

Monday, Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel
"Where in the World Are We? Being Christians After Christendom"

and Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel as part of the 2006-07 Convocation Series
"What Are People For? Caring for Life in A Violent World"

Dr. Hall is professor emeritus of Christian theology at McGill University in Montreal. He is the author of numerous books, including the trilogy, Christian Theology in a North American Context, and Why Christian?

Subject: Homecoming Office Decorating Contest Results...

Submitter:
Bethany J Bierman, Writer, Public Relations and Communication

Message: On behalf of the Homecoming Office Decorating Contest panel of judges, we'd like to thank all offices who participated in this year's heated competition. While each decorated office lifts the spirit of Auggie pride, five soared above the rest:

Administrative Offices -- first floor, Science Building
Advancement -- Crown Roller Building
Center for Counseling and Health Promotion -- corner house (7th and 21st)
Human Resources -- lower level, Memorial Hall
Office of Undergraduate Admissions -- first floor, Christensen Center.

From the glitz and glitter of HR to Advancement's Eagle's nest and "Cream the Cobbers," and from administrative accounting's eagle soundtrack and creative use of duct tap to CCHP's friendly flight attendants on "Auggie Airlines," to the robotics and strobe lights of Admissions -- you all make us proud to be Auggies!

The winner will be announced at chapel on Friday. Everyone, get out and check out all the offices. Thanks again to all participants!
