Coming soon is the Fifth Annual Homecoming Powder Puff Game,
Tuesday, September 26, at 7 p.m., Homecoming Week.
Registration is ONLY Tuesday and Wednesday, September 19 and 20 in Christensen Center at the Welcome Desk from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Those not able to make it to registration may email a roster with the captain name and her contact information, to admissions@augsburg.edu.
All teams must have one captain and ONLY the captain will register for the team. Teams must have a minimum of seven players.
All teams MUST BE REGISTERED IN ORDER TO PLAY. Rules and regulations will be distributed to the captains to share with their teams.
Pizza and T-shirts will be awarded to the champion team. All games will be played on the Edor Nelson field on Augsburg Campus. Fans welcomed and encouraged!
Make-up bags not necessary. There will be no time-outs for powdering.

"Title the Sculpture" Contest

Have you noticed there are three new pieces of outdoor art adorning our campus? These large metal sculptures are by Sam Spiczka, whose exhibition "Reliquiae" is currently on view in the Gage Family Art Gallery.
Even though Sam has given perfectly good names to these pieces ("Kubrick" is by Lindell Library, "Triple Spark" is in front of Foss, and "Fractured Daemon is in front of Christensen Center) the Augsburg College Art Galleries are sponsoring a "Title the Sculpture" contest. Embracing the notion that art can mean something different to every viewer, we want to know what YOU would title each piece. Email your suggestions to Kerry Morgan at morgank@augsburg.edu from now until Oct. 1. The most creative title for each piece will be announced at "Art Attack: A Multi-Campus Art Gallery Crawl," on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Gage Gallery. Winners need not be present to win one of three awesome prizes, but we'd love to see you participate in this annual art gallery crawl!

Take 24 hours to be a part of Quest 24, a 24-hour retreat at the Mt. Olivet Retreat Center. Mt. Olivet has several great amenities, including a pool, hot tub, a prayer labyrinth, and several great hiking trails.
This retreat is facilitated by staff from Campus Ministry and the Center for Service, Work, and Learning. We will guide you through a series of fun activities that will help you discern your call in the world. The staff is friendly and wants to challenge you to understand what “vocation” means at Augsburg College.

Cedar-Riverside/Augsburg Pottery Cooperative

Please join the students from Cedar-Riverside charter school as we collaborate on a bas-relief ceramic mural. One of the main objectives is to diminish the invisible boundary between our communities by giving ownership through an artistic community effort and through your voluntary interactions. Bring a hard object (not a requirement), not bigger than your closed hand, that has special meaning to you. A press mold will be made and hundreds (thousands?) of clay pressings will be made of your object. These clay objects will then be fired and included in the mural. The 5th - 8th grade students are scheduled to come Wed. Sept. 20, Tues. Sept. 26, Mon. Oct. 2 and Wed. Oct 4 from noon to 1 p.m. We will meet in Old Main 1 ceramics studio. I hope you can join us to promote a better understanding and fusion between our two communities.

Augsburg College will open the 2006-07 Vocatio Chapel Series, “How Are We Known: Vocation and Public Life” with the publisher of The Rake, Tom Bartel. The first Vocatio chapel of the year will be on Wednesday, September 27 in the Hoverstein Chapel at 10:20 AM. Bartel will share thoughts on the biblical passage, “Render Unto Caesar.”
Tom will also eat lunch with interested students, faculty, and staff to talk more about writing, publishing, and the magazine business. People interested in eating lunch with Bartel at 11:00 a.m. (following chapel) should RSVP to Ross Murray at murray@augsburg.edu.
The Rake is a monthly magazine, launched in March 2002 by people old enough to know better.
The Rake – like all rakes - has a reputation. It has personality. The Rake is full of good reading, good writing and strong visuals. What sets it apart is its focus on storytelling, its literary essays and commentary, its humor, style, and personality. Rake readers don’t use the magazine, they experience it.
The Rake is free. Its controlled, audited circulation of 60,000 is distributed throughout the Twin Cities metro area (Minneapolis and St. Paul), in cities and suburbs, in restaurants and libraries, in coffee shops and public buildings, for example.
The Vocatio Chapel Series, funded through a grant from the Lilly Endowment, focus on various aspects of vocation. These worship services are integral to Augsburg’s understanding of vocation, for the worshippers encounter a “Living Word” from beyond one’s self and become aware of living lives in the light of a wider purpose. One chapel a month is dedicated to the theme of vocation. The public is invited to attend any Augsburg College chapel services.

I am pleased to announce the promotion of Cherie Christ to the new
position of Director of Electronic Communications.
Cherie's promotion to this position is the start of an important organizational transition. Over the next 6 months, she will undertake a major web redesign project together with Mindpower, the Atlanta firm leading us on the Augsburg Promise project. For the duration of the redesign project, Cherie will co-report to Tracy Elftmann, VP of Advancement, and me. Supporting Cherie in this work will be one full-time position titled Communications Specialist (currently posted), and a team of student assistants. Following the launch of Mindpower's work (which will begin on the web), Cherie and her team will permanently join the then-reorganized Marketing/Communications staff.

Respond Now – Limited Space in Alumni Mentoring

The Alumni Mentoring Program is especially looking for students interested in athletics/coaching, math, and computer science.
The Alumni Mentoring Program is an opportunity for students to connect and build relationships with Augsburg alumni and wrestle with questions surrounding vocation. “Vocation” may mean job-related specifics but also refers to the larger sense of purpose in life.
Sophomores and up from across the student body are encouraged to participate. Teams are assigned together by major/discipline/interest area, ideally with three students, two alumni, and a faculty or staff person, who will serve as a facilitator. For example, business students will be on a team with business people working in the community and be facilitated by a member of the business faculty.
The program holds four dinners for all participants throughout the year. The dates for the 2006-2007 academic year are October 12, November 16, February 15, and March 29. They are all Thursday evenings. Dinner starts at 5:30, program starts at 6:15, and then teams will process the program, make plans for future outings, etc. The evening will be over by 7:30.
In addition to the four dinners, teams are encouraged to have various "vocational outings” throughout the year. Each team is given $250 for expenses related to these outings. These outings can include visits to alumni workplaces, coming on campus for an event or forum, or just dinner together as a team. The outings are planned by the team so they will be relevant. There is a possibility that students will be involved in these on-campus events, so the team can go to support the student in their endeavor.
Part of the purpose is for students to have conversations with alumni who are out there doing things in a given field. Alumni are also asking the same vocational questions that students are, only later in life. Alumni are also keenly interested in what is going on at Augsburg, so students can represent a certain point of view about Augsburg College.

A portrait of retired Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Rosalie Wahl has been hung in the Minnesota History Center. Justice Wahl is a board member of Augsburg's Anne Pederson Women's Resource Center.
When Justice Wahl was named to the Minnesota Supreme Court in 1977 by Governor Rudy Perpich, she became the first woman to sit on the highest court in the state of Minnesota.
Justice Wahl retired from the Minnesota Supreme Court 12 years ago and has been a member of the Anne Pederson Women's Resource Center Board since 2003.

Husband-and-wife team Josh & Vanessa Peter will speak of their experiences in escaping from Hurricane Katrina (with their infant daughter Norah) and then dealing with the Hurricane's aftermath at a free public talk at 12:10 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, in the East Commons, Christensen Center.
Brown bag lunches will be provided compliments of the Convocation Committee. Cafeteria trays also are welcome. The Peters' visit is being co-sponsored by the English and Communications Departments.
Josh, a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune, was on the Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage team for the newspaper. Vanessa, a public relations practitioner, had the typical experience of the myriad New Orleans business owners and workers who struggled to maintain their livelihoods "virtually" due to the fact that their workplaces were underwater.
In addition to their noon presentation, which will run until 1:15 p.m., they will hold an informal coffee time in the Student Gallery area of Christensen (just off the coffee shop) to answer questions and greet those who are interested in their story. A Hurricane Katrina-related art show is currently on display in the gallery.
