Subject: Want Direction? Join the Alumni Mentoring Program

Submitter:
Ross Murray, Campus Ministry Associate; Tutoring Services Coordinator; , Campus Ministry and Academic Skills Office

Message: The Alumni Mentoring Program is an opportunity for students to connect and build relationships with Augsburg alumni and wrestle with questions surrounding vocation. “Vocation” may mean job-related specifics but also refers to the larger sense of purpose in life.

Sophomores and up from across the student body are encouraged to participate. Ross Murray will assign teams together by major/discipline/interest area, ideally with three students, two alumni, and a faculty or staff person, who will serve as a facilitator. For example, business students will be on a team with business people working in the community and be facilitated by a member of the business faculty.

The program holds four dinners for all participants throughout the year. The dates for the 2006-2007 academic year are October 12, November 16, February 15, and March 29. They are all Thursday evenings. Usually, dinner starts at 5:30, program starts at 6:15, and then teams will process the program, make plans for future outings, etc. The evening will be over by 7:30.

In addition to the four dinners, teams are encouraged to have various "vocational outings” throughout the year. Each team is given $250 for expenses related to these outings. These outings can include visits to alumni workplaces, coming on campus for an event or forum, or just dinner together as a team. The outings are planned by the team so they will be relevant. There is a possibility that students will be involved in these on-campus events, so the team can go to support the student in their endeavor.

Part of the purpose is for students to have conversations with alumni who are out there doing things in a given field. Alumni are also asking the same vocational questions that students are, only later in life. Alumni are also keenly interested in what is going on at Augsburg, so students can represent a certain point of view about Augsburg College.

Questions? Call Ross Murray at x1151 or email murray@augsburg.edu.

Subject: Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15

Submitter:
Emiliano Chagil, Director, Hispanic-Latino Student Services

Message: Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 – October 15

The Hispanic Heritage Month celebration was originally authorized by Congress in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week, which encompassed September 16, Mexico’s Independence Day. In 1988, the designation was expanded to a month beginning every September 15, which marks the anniversary of independence of five Central American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Chile marks the anniversary of its independence on September 18.

This month of remembering is a time for the Hispanic community in the United States to celebrate its history, pride, identity and contributions to the world. Its cultural diversity is reflected in the mix of its roots from individual Latin American countries, including Spain and the Caribbean. The main characteristic of Hispanics/Latinos is the shared native language, Spanish; which is spoken by 332 million people in the world, and 35.3 millions in North America; a fair number of U.S.-born Hispanics don’t speak Spanish. Although most Hispanics speak Spanish, each subgroup adapts the pronunciation and slang of its homeland according to circumstances; it also includes many other people speaking their native or indigenous dialects. Likewise, they have inherited different religious traditions from foreign countries or from their homelands.

In a recent poll of Hispanic adults, 42% said they choose to be called Hispanic, 17% said Latino and 34% had no particular preference. Despite these cultural differences, other social forces contribute to the formation of an increasingly unified Hispanic identity in the world such as through its economic and political power. Like any immigrant group that has shaped mainstream U.S. culture before fully asserting its economic or political power, the nation’s 41.3 million Hispanics are just getting warmed up. In today’s business, they command nearly $600 billion in buying power. As US’s largest minority, Hispanics promise to help remake America in the 21st century as vitally as African Americans did in the 20th century.

This year at Augsburg College 64 Hispanic/Latino students are enrolled which includes day, WEC and graduate. Everyone is encouraged during this Hispanic Heritage Month to express own ethnicity, cultural affiliation or identity, and especially to exercise own “intellectual freedom in order to best care for and improve one’s world.” Activities for this commemoration will be announced as appropriate. In days ahead, additional articles will be appearing to offer our Augsburg community a broader picture of today’s largest minority. ¡Viva! (Hurrah!)
