Faculty Summer Research Guidelines

DESCRIPTION:

Support of faculty scholarly activity during the summer months. Scholarship is broadly defined to include disciplinary scholarship, the scholarship of application, interdisciplinary scholarship, and the scholarship of teaching. Examples of previous successful proposals are on file in the Center for Teaching and Learning.

"Scholarship of Teaching" typically goes beyond course development and/or revision and has as its audience other faculty and professionals in the field.

Occasionally, curriculum revision is proposed in the teaching scholarship category. In such a case, the proposal must convince the Faculty Development Committee that the project goes beyond those course development and revision activities that are normally expected of faculty as part of their workload.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Quality Criteria. Preference will be given to proposals that show evidence of thorough preparation and that meet the following criteria:
- Clear statement of realistic goals and objectives
- Appropriate and detailed project method/plan for achieving the goals and objectives
- Explanation of advance preparation and planning
- Clear description of the project's assessment
- Detailed timeline and budget

Other Criteria. Additional criteria that may influence the Committee?s decision include:
- Use of language and terminology that are clear to non-experts
- Necessity for funding for project completion
- Please attach a curriculum vita.

FUNDING: Up to $2000 per grant. A maximum of 3-4 awards may be made per year.
Source: Grangaard Faculty Development Fund.
Funding decisions are made by the Faculty Development Committee. All funds must be requested by the end of the fiscal year in which the grant is awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Faculty. At least 4/6 for at least two years prior to the beginning of the research; prorated for faculty who are less that 6/6. Limit: One grant during a 3-year period.

APPLICATION: Please use the Research Application form that is available by calling Terry Martin, x1229 or at the CTL website. Please send the completed application as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu.

Application Date: March 15 for the summer 2006.

Accountability:
- Completion of the following:
-Professional Development evaluation form and assessment as described in the project application
- Sharing the results with the Augsburg Community via:

Subject: Bell second at NCAA track nationals
Submitter:

Message: Tonnisha Bell second in women's 55 at NCAA Division III indoor nationals

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/track/0506statistics/031106ncaa.html

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (3/11/06) -- Augsburg College's Tonnisha Bell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) earned her third All-American honors in the women's 55-meter dash in her career, finishing second by one-hundredth of a second in the finals of the event at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field national championships on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf College's Tostrud Center.

Bell finished second in the finals of the event with a 7.10-second time; Shanda Jackson of Lincoln (Pa.), the defending national champion in the event, won the title with a 7.09-second finish. The top five finishers among the eight finalists in the event finished within five-hundredths of a second of each other.

The second-place finish is Bell's best in NCAA championship events and the third All-American honor of her career. She finished sixth in the 55-meter dash in both 2003 and 2005, qualifying for the national meet in the event every year of her career.

The finish is also the best for an Auggie track and field athlete at a national meet since Carrie Lind finished second in consecutive years in the indoor women's 20-pound weight throw in 1999 and 2000.

Bell has been one of the dominant sprinters in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference during her career. Bell has qualified for every NCAA national championship meet during her track career at Augsburg -- four indoor national meets and three outdoor national meets -- and has won nine Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships (six indoor, three outdoor) and earned All-MIAC honors 13 times (nine indoor, four outdoor) during her career.

Augsburg has qualified individuals in 53 different women's track and field events to national meets in school history (48 NCAA, five NAIA). Augsburg women's athletes have now earned 28 All-American honors and eight individual national championships in track and field in school history.

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/031006bell.html

Also, Bell was named NCAA Division III Central Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and also was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outstanding Female Track Athlete from the MIAC indoor championships last weekend.

Bell won MIAC titles in the women's 55- and 200-meter dashes at the conference indoor championships, repeating her sprint double championship from last season. She won each event for the third time in her career, having won the 200-meter dash the last three years and the 55-meter dash her freshman, junior and senior years. She also placed third in the long jump at the MIAC meet.
