Subject: Food For Folk Benefit Dinner

Submitter:
Timothy Dougherty, Campus Kitchens Supervisor, Center for Service Work and Learning

Message: If you'll be in town at the tail end of Spring Break, come show your support for one of the Campus Kitchen's key partners in Minnesota, the Food For Folk Project (FFF).

Started by Gary Brever of Ploughshare Farm, FFF utilizes monetary donations to pay farmers a living wage for fresh, local and organic produce that they then deliver to low-income urban populations that would otherwise have no access to such fare. This project creatively leverages community dollars to reinvigorate the rural population by supporting small, organic growers while revitalizing urban neighborhoods badly in need of healthy food.

In the past two summers, the Campus Kitchen at Augsburg College has received over 5,000 lbs. of produce from FFF, which has translated into thousands of incredibly nutritious meals for our partner agencies.

Friday, March 24th 2006, FFF is holding a salmon dinner (donated coho that was wild caught in Alaskan waters) at St. Mark's Catholic Church in St. Paul to benefit its efforts in the community. Dinner is at 6 p.m. and will be followed by speaker Dr. Kamyar Enshayan (University of Northern Iowa) and the House of Mercy gospel string band.

Tickets are $20 if purchased by March 16, $25 afterward. This will directly benefit FFF's efforts in the community and will help ensure that the Campus Kitchen continues to have access to such bountiful and beautiful food.

There are also volunteer opportunities available if that is more your speed. For tickets or more information, please call or email Tim Dougherty, CKAC coordinator, at ext. 1624 or tdougherty@campuskitchens.org

Subject: Overdraft what?

Submitter:
Carly Eichhorst, Financial Aid Counselor, Enrollment Center

Message: Get overdraft protection! If you overdraw or write checks for more money than you have in your account, you will face large fees. With overdraft protection, the bank will cover the cost that you can't. It is a loan from the bank. But, don't overdraw too many times or the interest on the "loan" will become very high.

Watch for "Does Your Money Matter?" events during March!

Subject: Augsburg takes third at NCAA wrestling nationals

EWING, N.J. (3/4/06) -- Placing among the top four teams nationally for the 18th season in a row, the Augsburg College wrestling team claimed six All-Americans and finished third at the NCAA Division III wrestling national championships on Saturday evening at The College of New Jersey's Student Recreation Center.

Augsburg placed third at the national meet with 84.5 points, breaking a string of 11 straight seasons of first- or second-place finishes in Division III national competition. Augsburg has won nine national championships in the last 16 seasons.

Wartburg (Iowa) won its fifth team national title with 145.5 points, winning two individual titles and claiming nine All-Americans. Wisconsin-La Crosse finished second with 106.0 points, with two national champions and seven All-Americans. Luther (Iowa) was fourth with 59.5 points, and York (Pa.) was fifth with 51.5 points. St. John's (Minn.) finished 16th with 20.0 points, claiming two All-Americans.

Augsburg associate head coach Sam Barber was named Co-Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, sharing the honor with Wartburg assistant coach Dale Malecek.

Three Auggies finished second in their weight classes, with three Auggies finishing fourth, marking the 18th straight year that Augsburg has claimed five or more All-Americans in national wrestling competition.

Ryan Valek (Sr., Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West), a three-time All-American at 165 pounds for the Auggies, finished second for the second season in a row in his weight class, falling 6-4 to Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Derek Sikora in a finals matchup of the top two ranked individuals in the nation. Sikora took the lead early in the match with the first of his two takedowns, and also converted an escape and 2:42 of riding time to beat Valek for the second time this season.

Valek advanced to the finals with a 2:34 pin of Tim Maxworthy of Heidelberg (Ohio) in the semifinals. Valek, who finished seventh his sophomore year and second his junior year, finished 41-4 on the season and 133-39 in his career.

Jafari Vanier (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) had his third overtime match of the tournament in the 133-pound finals, but fell 2-1 in three overtimes to Mike Lopez of Luther (Iowa). After the two completed regulation time and the first one-minute overtime tied at 1-1, Lopez rode out Vanier in the second, 30-second overtime, then claimed an escape in the third, 30-second overtime session to clinch the win.

Vanier, an unseeded wrestler in his first NCAA Division III national tournament, claimed three wins over seeded opponents to reach the finals. In the semifinals earlier Saturday, Vanier scored a takedown with 22 seconds left in the first overtime period to claim a 3-1 win over seventh-seed John Sheets of Manchester (Ind.). Vanier, who finished 19-3 on the year, completed his first season at Augsburg after finishing second at the national junior college championships as a competitor at Iowa Central Community College in 2002.

Jeremy Anderson (So., Thief River Falls, Minn.), a transfer from the University of Minnesota, surrendered four takedowns and a reversal in his championship match at 157 pounds, falling 11-5 to Joe Pflug of Heidelberg (Ohio).

Anderson, who finished 44-3 on the season, reached the finals with a 7-5 victory over Robert Gingerich of North Central (Ill.) in Saturday's semifinal. Anderson jumped out to a 4-1 second-period lead and used a takedown with 1:34 left in the third period to clinch the win.

Brad Tupa (Sr., Dundas, Minn./Faribault HS), a two-time All-American at 184 pounds, finished fourth for the second straight year with a 6-1 loss to Jason Lulloff of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the third-place match. Tupa finished 21-5 on the season and 74-25 in his Auggie career.

At 149, Jared Evans (Jr., Blue Earth, Minn./Blue Earth Area HS) finished fourth, suffering a 1:21 pin in the third-place match to Jason Roush of Mt. St. Joseph (Ohio). Evans finished 38-8 and is 102-32 in his Auggie career.

At 174, Robbie Gotreau (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) gave up a third-period escape and 1:52 of riding time to Josh Chelf of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the third-place match, falling 2-0 to finish fourth. It was Chelf's second victory over Gotreau in the tournament. Gotreau finished 44-9 on the season and is 68-20 in his Auggie career.

Message: Augsburg's Tonnisha Bell to compete at NCAA Division III indoor track national championships

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/030706bell.html

MINNEAPOLIS (3/7/06) -- Augsburg College track and field sprinter Tonnisha Bell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) will compete in her seventh NCAA Division III track and field national championship meet, after qualifying for the fourth straight year in the women's 55-meter dash for the indoor championships this weekend at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

Bell qualified with the third-fastest time nationally in the women's 55-meter dash at 7.13 seconds, as one of five individuals to eclipse the automatic qualifying time of 7.14 seconds. Mechelle Barnwell of the City College of New York has the fastest time among the 13 entrants in the event at 7.08 seconds.

The NCAA Division III indoor track and field national championships will be held at the Tostrud Fieldhouse at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The women's 55-meter dash prelimiaries will be on Friday (3/10) at 7:20 p.m., with the finals set for Saturday (3/11) at 5:45 p.m. Bell holds the facility record at the Tostrud Fieldhouse in the 55-meter dash, with a 7.09-second time set last year.

Bell had also provisionally qualified in the women's long jump with a school-record 5.50-meter (18-feet, 0.5-inch) effort, but fell one inch (0.02 meters) shy of the final qualifying distance among the 16 entrants in the long jump -- 5.52 meters (18-feet, 1.5-inch) by Patti Clintsman of St. Benedict.

Bell has been one of the dominant sprinters in the MIAC during her career. Bell has qualified for every NCAA national championship meet during her track career at Augsburg -- four indoor national meets and three outdoor national meets. She has earned All-American honors twice, in the indoor 55-meter dash in 2003 and 2005, both times finishing sixth nationally. Last season, she competed in the NCAA indoor national meet in the 55-meter dash, and in the outdoor national meet in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Last weekend, Bell won the 55- and 200-meter dashes at the MIAC indoor championships, while finishing third in the long jump. Bell has won nine conference championships (six indoor, three outdoor) and earned All-MIAC honors 13 times (nine indoor, four outdoor) during her career. She holds conference meet records in the 55-meter (7.12 seconds, 2003) and 200-meter (25.26, 2005) dashes.

Bell has earned MIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors seven times in her career, including four times last season. She earned MIAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Performance honors in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, both times after breaking conference records in winning sprint events.

Augsburg has now qualified individuals in 53 different women's track and field events to national meets in school history (48 NCAA, five NAIA). Augsburg women's athletes have earned 27 All-American honors and eight individual national championships in track and field in school history.
