Submitter:

Message: Center for Teaching and Learning
Faculty Summer Research Guidelines

DESCRIPTION:

Support of faculty scholarly activity during the summer months. Scholarship is broadly defined to include disciplinary scholarship, the scholarship of application, interdisciplinary scholarship, and the scholarship of teaching. Examples of previous successful proposals are on file in the Center for Teaching and Learning.

"Scholarship of teaching" typically goes beyond course development and/or revision and has as its audience other faculty and professionals in the filed.

Occasionally, curriculum revision is proposed in the teaching scholarship category. In such a case, the proposal must convince the Faculty Development Committee that the project goes beyond those course development and revision activities that are normally expected of faculty as part of their workload.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Quality Criteria. Preference will be given to proposals that show evidence of thorough preparation and that meet the following criteria:
- Clear statement of realistic goals and objectives
- Appropriate and detailed project method/plan for achieving the goals and objectives
- Explanation of advance preparation and planning
- Clear description of the project-s assessment
- Detailed timeline and budget

Other Criteria. Additional criteria that may influence the Committee-s decision include:
- Use of language and terminology that are clear to non-experts
- Necessity for funding for project completion
- Please attach a curriculum vita.

FUNDING: Up to $2000 per grant. A maximum of 3-4 awards may be made per year.
Source: Grangaard Faculty Development Fund.
Funding decisions are made by the Faculty Development Committee. All funds must be requested by the end of the fiscal year in which the grant is awarded.

ELIGIBILITY: Faculty. At least 4/6 for at least two years prior to the beginning of the research; prorated for faculty who are less that 6/6. Limit: One grant during a 3-year period.

APPLICATION: Please use the Research Application form that is available by calling Terry Martin, x1229. The application will be sent to you as an e-mail attachment and should be returned in the same manner.

Application Date: March 15 for the summer following.

Accountability:
- Completion of the following:
Professional Development evaluation form and assessment as described in the project application
- Sharing the results with the Augsburg Community via:
Presentation of a community discussion, Scholarship Fair, or another venue approved by the
FacDev Committee.

Subject: Fighting the "Blues" in African Americans

Submitter:
Dianne Detloff, Administrative Assistant, Counseling & Health Promotion

Message: As we conclude the month of February recognizing African Americans, Counseling & Health Promotion wants to highlight a helpful website which talks about fighting depression in African Americans. The average black person in America is more likely to suffer depression than the average white person in America. According to a study by the National Mental Health Association African Americans are the least likely to seek professional help for depression. Check out Healthy Place.Com for more information regarding this topic or as a student you can call the Counseling & Health Promotion office if you would like to meet with a psychologist.

Subject: How much did that cost?

Submitter:
Carly Eichhorst, Financial Aid Counselor, Enrollment Center

Message: Remember, if you purchase a $500 stereo with a credit card that has a 20% APR, it will end up costing you $1084 and take nine years to pay off! Paying only the minimum on your credit cards is detrimental to your financial health!

Watch for "Does Your Money Matter" events throughout March!

Subject: National Eating Disorders Awareness Week!

Submitter:
Dianne Detloff, Administrative Assistant, Counseling & Health Promotion

Events are being held all over the country as well as here at Augsburg. This week, we invite the community to join in and donate their "skinny" jeans to the Great Jeans Giveaway (boxes at the info desk, CCHP office, Anderson Residence Life Office and Urness Mort Lobby). Also on Thursday, March 2nd Kay Guidarelli, a registered dietician will staff a table in Christensen from 11 - 12 to answer questions with "Ask a Nutritionist." There will be a number of table tents throughout the week discussing a variety of eating related issues and you can go to the National Eating Disorders Association webpage for additional resources or click on the Augsburg CCHP web page self-help link on eating concerns. CCHP staff are also available to meet with students if there is concern about an eating disorder. Call 612-330-1707 for an individual appointment.

Come find out! President Frame will be reflecting on faith and vocation in his life tomorrow morning as the next speaker in our faith@work! series at St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church. Augsburg College and St. Philip the Deacon Lutheran Church have partnered to promote faith@work! to encourage us to more effectively live out our faith where we work and live.
