Message: Augsburg's Aaron Johnson named MIAC Men's Hockey Player of the Week
http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/022106johnson.html

MINNEAPOLIS (2/21/06) -- Augsburg College men's hockey player Aaron Johnson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Hockey Player of the Week for the second time this season, it was announced on Monday.

Johnson had a six-point performance (two goals, four assists) in Augsburg's series split with Gustavus last weekend, with a goal and two assists in each game. Augsburg lost 8-6 to Gustavus on Friday, rallying from a 5-1 second-period deficit to cut the lead to 7-6 in the final minute. Augsburg topped Gustavus 4-3 on Saturday to break an eight-game losing streak, as the Auggies rallied from a 2-0 first-period deficit with three goals in the second period -- with Johnson having a part of each of the goals.

Johnson is currently the MIAC's leading scorer in overall play (11 goals, 30 assists, 41 points), and is second in conference games only in scoring (7 goals, 17 assists, 24 points), leading the league in assists in both rankings. Among all NCAA Division III players (collegehockeystats.net), Johnson ranks fourth nationally in scoring (1.78 points per game) and second nationally in assists per game (1.30).

Monday's honor marks his second MIAC Player of the Week award of the season; he was also honored on Jan. 16 after a seven-point weekend in nonconference play.

In two seasons of hockey at Augsburg (48 games), Johnson has compiled 21 goals and 55 assists for 76 points. He transferred to Augsburg after playing his first season (five games) at Division I Michigan Tech. Johnson earned All-MIAC first-team honors last season, after leading the league in assists (20 in conference games) and leading the team in overall scoring (10 goals, 25 assists, 35 points). His 25 assists were ninth-best nationally among Division III players last season.

Augsburg, now 7-13-3 overall, 3-8-3 in MIAC play, closes its season on Friday and Saturday (2/24-25) with a two-game series at Concordia-Moorhead. Friday's game is at 7 p.m., with Saturday's game at 2 p.m.
