Subject: Fisk Jubilee Singers and Augsburg Choir

Submitter:
Randall Davidson, Fine Arts Manager, Music

Message: The Fisk Jubilee Singers of Nashville will hold an open rehearsal with the Augsburg Choir on Friday afternoon from 3:20 to 5 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel. The choirs will be lead by directors Dr. Paul Kwami and Dr. Peter Hendrickson. The public is welcome to attend.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers are the first internationally acclaimed group of African-American musicians who attained first recognition, then fame, and along the way, financed their school. The talented vocal artists introduced "slave songs" to the world and, in many opinions, preserved this music from extinction.

In 1871, the nine original Jubilee Singers ensemble toured the United States and Europe. Two years later, the group grew to eleven members, who expanded the second European tour. Funds raised by the Jubilee Singers during their international concerts were used to construct the school's first permanent building, Jubilee Hall. Jubilee Hall, one of the oldest structures in use at Fisk University, is designated as a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. This beautiful Victorian Gothic building houses a ceiling-to-floor portrait of the original Jubilee Singers, commissioned by Queen Victoria of England as a gift to Fisk University.

The Fisk Jubilee Singers will appear on Sunday, February 19, 2006, co-presented by Ordway Center for the Performing Arts and Vocalessence. Also on the program is the world premiere of Truth, a choral ballet by Alvin Singleton with choreography by Uri Sands and TU Dance. Tickets for the Sunday concert are available online or call 651-224-4222.
