Subject: Friday Seminar, 2/17 with John Schmit

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

Stuff you already know: a peek inside the structures of language
* Warning: Obscenity and profanity will be prominently featured in this presentation

Because the capacity for language is innate in humans, we need to learn much less than we imagine about language and how to use it. It is fascinating, then, to look at the knowledge we have innately or acquire unconsciously and to see how it informs our manipulation of linguistic structures. And how could it be that we have a deep familiarity with linguistic rules that no school would ever allow us to put into practice?

Since most of the examples to be used in this presentation are unprintable, you'll have to show up for the seminar to find out what they are.

John Schmit, a member of the Augsburg Community since 1990, has spent way too much time studying prosodic phonology, an endeavor that has left him irreparably twisted. When you see the stuff that he's interested in, you'll see what we mean. Schmit's academic training spans linguistics and literature, especially the study of poetic meters and rhythmic organization in non-metrical poetry.

Refreshments are served at 3:30 in the Minneapolis Room; the presentation begins at 4.
