Leif B Anderson, Chief Information Officer, Information Technology

Message: Students & Faculty:

As part of our transition to a new information system this weekend, AugNet Records & Registration is back up and running. The site has undergone changes, although this first phase aims to replicate the features you are already used to. You'll notice simpler screens and much faster processing.

For student questions regarding AugNet Records & Registration, please contact the enrollment center at enroll@augsburg.edu, or by phone at
612-330-1046. Faculty questions should be directed to your LFC.

Do you have suggestions to make these web features easier to use? Our new system provides us the flexibility to refine AugNet Records & Registration. I welcome your suggestions at andersol@augsburg.edu.

A story about love, family, and the experience of AIDS.
As a part of the broader scope of Tusamehe, a sub-theme of the story draws attention to the grossly uneven spread of AIDS across the globe, a disparity that has left many people in developing countries helpless. To make matters worse, many hold false assumptions about the people with HIV in these countries. They blame victims for making poor choices as if they have the power and resources to make any "choice," good or bad.
Our story is about the effects of AIDS as told from one victim's point of view. Tusamehe is 60% Swahili with English subtitles. Swahili is a language spoken by over 100 million people. Yet it is much underserved when it comes to movies. This is a continued commitment of Kibira Films International to produce movies in Swahili.

Subject: Salman Rushdie at Westminster Town Hall Forum

Submitter:
Jacqueline R deVries, Associate Professor and Chair of History, History

Message: Novelist Salman Rushdie will speak at the Westminster Town Hall Forum this Thursday, Nov. 10, at 12 noon. Westminster is located at 12th and Nicollet in downtown Minneapolis. This event is free and open to the public.

Rushdie is best known as the author of Midnight?s Children and The Satanic Verses. The latter novel, deemed sacrilegious by Iran?s Ayatollah Khomeni, brought him under a fatwa in 1989. Forced to live in exile, Rushdie produced some of his most compelling work including The Moor?s Last Sigh and The Ground Beneath her Feet. A recent book, Step Across This Line: Collected Nonfiction 1992-2002, explores both personal and public reactions to the fatwa. He has received numerous awards, including the Booker Prize for Midnight's Children, the Whitbread Prize for Best Novel, the Writers' Guild Award, the James Tait Black Prize, the Aristeion Prize for Literature, Britian and Germany?s Author of the Year Prizes, and the French Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger. In 2004, Rushdie was elected President of PEN American Centre, a branch of the world?s oldest human rights organization. Rushdie's newest novel, Shalimar the Clown, is scheduled for release this fall. Mr. Rushdie?s writings and work are testimony to the power of the artist in society.

Subject: 2005 Public Flu Clinic Update

Submitter:
Dianne Detloff, Administrative Assistant, Counseling & Health Promotion

Message: Several people have inquired about any flu clinic on campus this year. We will not be having an on-site clinic because initially the vaccine was to have been in short supply again and colleges were not in highest risk group of people. Now the vaccine is available but delayed by vendors and it's too late to schedule an on-site clinic. So we encourage you to check the MVNA website at www.mvna.org That site lists all the locations of public flu shot clinics dates and locations. No appointments are needed and the cost is $19.00 Also, Smiley's Clinic may have vaccine available in the near future -- as soon as their vendor delivers their supply. When it becomes available individual appointments can be made at Smiley's for a flu shot, too. If you have other specific questions, please feel free to call the Counseling & Health Promotion office at 612-330-1707.

Subject: Suk, Anderson named to Academic All-District team
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's Millie Suk, Emily Anderson named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women's soccer team

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/110705academicsoccer.html

MINNEAPOLIS (11/7/05) -- Augsburg College forwards Millie Suk (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) and Emily Anderson (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V women's soccer team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Suk, a political science major with a 3.86 grade-point-average, was named to the second team, while Anderson, a biology major with a 3.42 grade-point-average, was named to the third team. For Suk, it's her second straight year earning Academic All-District honors, after being named to the first team last year.

A four-year starter, Suk closed her career as Augsburg's all-time leading scorer, setting school records for both career points (93) and goals (38) in 67 career games. Her 17 career assists rank sixth-best in school history. This season, Suk finished with nine goals and six assists for 24 points, including three game-winning goals. In MIAC games, Suk ranked seventh among conference players in points (13), seventh in goals (four) and fourth in assists (five).

The only player to earn All-MIAC first-team honors each of the last three seasons, Suk was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's All-West Region third team last season. She was named MIAC Player of the Week for the third time in her career on Oct. 26.

A three-year starter (53 games), Anderson currently stands fourth in school history in career points (66), fourth in career goals (24) and fifth in career assists (18). This season, Anderson had a streak of 10 straight games scoring at least a goal or an assist, including a five-game goal-scoring streak, as she scored Augsburg's first seven goals in MIAC play. She finished with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points this season, including three game-winning goals. In MIAC games, Anderson finished third among conference players in points (16), third in goals (seven) and 10th in assists (two).

Anderson earned All-MIAC first-team honors last season, after being named an honorable-mention selection in 2003. She earned MIAC Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career on Sept. 20.

Augsburg finished 8-3-7 overall and 5-2-4 in MIAC play in 2005, the most ties and fewest losses in a regular season in school history. Augsburg's 5-2-4 MIAC record (14 points) matched last year's 7-4-0 conference mark for its best record, in terms of conference points, in school history. Augsburg started the 2005 season with an 11-game unbeaten streak (7-0-4), the best unbeaten streak to start a season in school history.

Augsburg also completed the second-best four-year stretch of victories in school history in 2005. Augsburg finished 40-21-11 over the last four seasons (2002-05), just one win shy of the best four-year stretch, 41-24-5 from 1994-97. Augsburg had just three seniors on the roster, and will return 16 letterwinners next season.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is part of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the district team. Student-athletes must have a grade-point average above 3.20 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials. College sports information directors in the district vote for the teams.
