Subject: Spring Day & Winter WEC Advising and Registration

Submitter:
Sheila Anderson, Interim Director of Academic Advising, Academic Advising

Message: The term is well underway, and it's time to think about registration for the upcoming term. You're probably wondering whom you should see for advising. We have completed the advisor assignment process for students entering Augsburg in fall term. At this point all undergraduate students have an assigned faculty advisor. Students are encouraged to discuss academic and career plans their faculty advisor on a regular basis. Part of your discussion will undoubtedly focus on course selection, but we hope your relationship will be much more than that. We hope this will be an opportunity to build a faculty-student mentoring relationship that will greatly enhance your academic and career focus while assisting you in course selection.

To get the most out of your advising session, we encourage you to do the following:
1) Schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor now. Schedule it early so you'll have the best selection of times.
2) Review the College Catalog for major requirements, course descriptions, and graduation requirements. Be well informed as you plan your degree.
3) Review the schedule for the next term to see whatâs available. See the class schedule in AugNet Records and Registration. Check out the Course Schedule Viewer located under planning tools on the Academic Advising website (http://www.augsburg.edu/advising). This tool will allow you to sort classes by liberal arts requirements. VERY HELPFUL!
4) Prepare a tentative schedule of courses including some backup options.
5) Put some thought into your career plans and vocation and how this degree path will help you reach your goals.

The name of your primary faculty advisor is listed in Records and Registration portion of AugNet. Each student in the Day program must meet with his/her faculty advisor prior to scheduling classes to gain access to web registration. Although the advisor meeting is optional for students in the Weekend program, it is HIGHLY recommended. If the advisor listed is not in your major area of study or if you are seeing a faculty advisor other than the person listed on AugNet, you must change your faculty advisor. Note, if you have 2 majors or a major and licensure, you will have 2 faculty advisors. Either advisor can release your registration hold. Stop by the Enrollment Center for more information about your second advisor.

To access the name of your primary faculty advisor:
1) Access AugNet at augnet.augsburg.edu
2) Login into AugNet by entering your user ID and password.
3) Click on Records and Registration
4) Click on My Schedule. Your faculty advisor's name is listed to the right of the word "Advisor."

To access advisor contact information (office location, phone number, e-mail address), you may click on the link in Records and Registration or follow the steps below:
1) Access AugNet at augnet.augsburg.edu
2) Login into AugNet by entering your user ID and password.
3) Click on Directory Search
4) Enter your faculty advisor's name and click "Go."

To change your faculty advisor:
1) Pick up the major/minor/advisor Declaration Form at the Enrollment Center, 1st floor Sverdrup Hall or print a copy from the Augsburg Academic Advising homepage (www.augsburg.edu/advising & click on Declaring a Major).
2) Complete the form with new faculty advisor. Your new faculty advisor must sign this form.
3) Return the completed form to the Enrollment Center for processing.

Below are just a couple of the departments that are here to assist you as you navigate this process:

Subject: New On-line Course Feedback System

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: New On-line Course Feedback System

On October 18th, the faculty approved adoption for two years of the new on-line student course feedback system beginning Fall 2005. This will be the official college form and the customized component will begin in spring. Many thanks go to the design committee: Frankie Shackelford, Dale Pederson, Pam Weiss, Tony Bibus, and Sean Truman and especially to those faculty who participated in the pilot program last year. Most critically, many thanks are due for the hard work and leadership of Scott Krajewski, Associate Director of IT; he will continue to work in a leadership role with CTL in bringing this project online.

The goal is to provide information faculty and the college will find useful. An initiative to work with individual faculty, departments and programs, and committees to understand the new information is in the planning stages. Any faculty member who wishes to be part of the CTL Work group on Course Feedback should contact Diane Pike, Director of CTL at pike@augsburg. edu. We welcome believers and skeptics and look forward to launching this new system. We only ask that those who volunteer are willing to make a modest time commitment and work toward the goal of having a helpful and manageable system. Please indicate your interest by Friday, November 11.

Thanks,
Diane Pike, Director, Center for Teaching and Learning

Subject: Adult Students/Adult Learning Workshop

Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message: "Intimations about Adult Students and Adult Learning"
Tuesday, November 15
5:30 - 8 p.m. in Riverside

Rick Thoni, Director of the Rochester Program and John Schmit, Dean of Graduate and Adult Academic Programs will facilitate.

This workshop, co-led by Weekend College founder and adult-learning pioneer Rick Thoni and by former Weekend College Director John Schmit, will answer several key questions about adult learning in higher education:

1. How are adult students different?
2. What are the implications of these differences for teaching strategy?
3. How are the roles of student and teacher different in an adult program?
4. What are some of the societal issues that impact adult learning programs (e.g. globalization, consumerism, Internet, era of the "disposable" employee, rate of change, etc.)?

The workshop will also consider adult students' motivation, learning styles, and educational needs. It will meet from 5:30 - 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and will include dinner for the participants. All faculty are welcome, but we particularly urge all Weekend College faculty, graduate faculty, and new faculty to attend. We hope many of our adjuncts will be able to attend this evening time slot. Please rsvp to martin@augsburg.edu by November 12th so we can estimate the number for dinner.

Subject: The campaign--watch your money grow!

Submitter:
Betsey Norgard, Director of Publications, Public Relations and Communication

Message: You can contribute to the Access to Excellence campaign all year, but there's a really good reason to do it NOW--your gift can receive two matches and more than double in value.

A matching fund from faculty emeriti, faculty, and staff will double your gift. Then, Thrivent (formerly Lutheran Brotherhood) will provide a 50% match for its members. And, we who work at a Lutheran institution are all eligible to become associate members for just $10.

So, take advantage of these matches to help your gift make a greater impact on the needs of the College in this campaign. Faculty and staff CAN make it happen!

For pledge forms and Thrivent membership forms, call x1171 or e-mail <croyle@augsburg.edu>. Send them to the Development Office, CB 142.

Subject: 2006 Benefits Plan Year

Submitter:
Cynthia J Greenwood, Associate Director, Human Resources

Message: To: All Benefits-Eligible Faculty and Staff:

Our next benefit plan year will begin January 1, 2006. In past years we have offered an annual enrollment period during December. This sometimes caused problems for employees trying to turn in forms or get questions answered during the last week of December when few staff members are here. To avoid this conflict, we have changed the period of time we call our annual enrollment period. Starting this year, the calendar month of November will be our annual enrollment period. Certain changes in your benefits may be made only during this time of year. Please plan to attend one of the following scheduled meetings and/or read this memo http://web.augsburg.edu/~greenwoo/2006benefitscovermemo.doc carefully for information regarding 2006 benefits and changes:

Tuesday, November 8, 2005 from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the Minneapolis Room
Wednesday, November 9, 2005 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the Minneapolis Room
Wednesday, November 16, 2005 from 9 - 10 a.m. in the Marshall Room
Tuesday, November 29, 2005 from 3 - 4 p.m. in the Century Room

Have a great day!

Subject: Scheduled interruption of financial services

Submitter:
Jeffrey S Swenson, Controller, Administrative Accounting

Message: On Thursday, November 3rd and Friday, November 4th, the Administrative Accounting and Human Resources Departments will be forced to suspend all operations that are related to our main operating system. The scheduled conversion of student services data to our new Agresso system is forcing us to interrupt our software related services. Replacement or special payroll, payable, and credit refund checks cannot be produced. We will also not be able to process purchase order requests or provide personal or departmental reporting. This includes the viewing of departmental budgets via the web. We expect all services to be renewed as of Monday, November 7th.

Subject: Goliards invite you to Commedia dell'arte play

Submitter:
Phillip C. Adamo, Assistant Professor, History

Message: The Goliard Society of Medievalists has 30 tickets to see the Guthrie WORLDStage presentation of "Arlecchino: Servant of Two Masters," Sunday, November 20 at 1 p.m. The tickets are free to students and other members of the Augsburg community on a first come-first served basis.

"Arlecchino" is a play in the Commedia dell'arte style, which was popular in Italy from the 14th to the 18th century. It is an improvised comedy that features virtuosic performances by actors who sing, dance, tumble, juggle, and convey a range of theatrical emotions. Many of the stock characters - the foolish father, the promiscuous daughter, the pompous official - remain as regular elements of modern comedy, even in television sit-coms.

For more information, or to reserve your ticket, please e-mail adamo@augsburg.edu.

Subject: Auggie women's soccer in MIAC playoffs tonight!
Submitter:
Donald W Stoner, Sports Information Coordinator, Public Relations and Communication

Message: Augsburg's women's soccer team has qualified for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs for the second straight season, and will compete in the playoff semifinals tonight (Tuesday 11/1) at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester College in St. Paul.

Augsburg is the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, finishing the regular season with an 8-2-7 overall record (5-2-4 MIAC). Macalester, the No. 3-ranked team nationally in the Division III national poll and top-ranked team in the Central Region, is 16-0-1 overall (10-0-1 MIAC), having won the MIAC regular-season title to earn the top seed in the playoffs. However, Macalester's lone tie of the season came at the hands of Augsburg, a 1-1 draw on Sept. 28 in Minneapolis.

If Augsburg wins tonight, it would play in the conference championship game on Saturday (11/5) at the winner of the other semifinal between No. 2 seed Concordia-Moorhead and No. 3 seed St. Thomas.

If you can't make it to Macalester for tonight's game, you can listen online to Augsburg's live audio webcast of the game, through Augsburg's arrangement with Stretch Internet. Go online to http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/liveaudio/ and click on the women's soccer "listen" link. Pregame begins at 7:20 p.m., with the game starting at 7:30 p.m.
