Teaching and Learning

Navigating Hot Button Topics Through Civic Agency

Civic organizers often say "challenges are opportunities." A case in point: the growing controversies on college campuses around hot button topics.

Faculty, students and staff are invited to a lively and productive discussion about "Navigating Hot Button Topics" with Harry Boyte and others from the Sabo Center. Building on conversations initiated by Doug Green, Jacqueline deVries and others at Augsburg, we will hear about people's experiences with controversies in teaching, discuss the current debates about free speech, "coddling," and "safe spaces," and look at what an approach based on civic agency and "free spaces" might contribute. We hope this contributes to a growing public culture of exchange and learning on the campus about these questions, which are central to our education and democratic purposes.

Navigating Hot Topics: The Civic Agency Approach to Constructive Engagement and Discussion
Next Wednesday, March 30
9:00-10:30 a.m.
Marshall Room, Christen Center

Co-sponsored by the Sabo Center and CTL

Renew Your FAFSA by May 1

It's that time again! The FAFSA application for the 2016-2017 year is now available for students returning to Augsburg for the 2016-2017 academic year. The FAFSA is the application required to determine your eligibility for access to financial aid during your time at Augsburg, and must be renewed every year.

May 1st is the deadline to apply for financial aid at Augsburg. All Day College students must submit their application by this date or risk losing some of the aid that may be available to you.

File your taxes early to ensure that you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing your FAFSA this year. This function pre-populates your tax information into the application, which reduces your chances of being selected for verification later on. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool is available for use on the FAFSA 2-3 weeks after electronically filing your taxes, and 6-8 weeks after filing paper taxes.

Questions? Stop by the Enrollment Center and speak with any of our Student Financial Services Counselors or call us at 612-330-1046.

Alum Laurie Barger Discusses Actuarial Science

Mathematics Colloquium
Wednesday, March 23
3:10 PM
Old Main 105

No Risk, No Reward

Laurie Barger
Senior Actuarial Consultant
Traveler's Insurance

We have all heard the age old saying, "No Risk, No Reward." Typically, this goes along with our qualitative vision that if we do not risk something, we will not get the full benefits of the reward. Our common sense tends to create a threshold of how comfortable we are with the unknown, and our decisions follow. Switching gears, let's think about all of the unknowns within the insurance industry. You get insurance to cover any accidents or costs that "might" happen in the future. Insurance industries need to be able to quantify these risks in order to ensure they can help in those times of need. The unknown is an integral part of the insurance industry and actuaries are able to evaluate and mitigate these risks in order to protect you and your belongings if (or when) these future events occur. This presentation will cover a high-level introduction to the risk-adverse career of Actuarial Science, how to become an Actuary, and Actuarial opportunities at Travelers Insurance.

Laurie Barger is former student-athlete and alum of the Augsburg Women's Soccer team. She holds an undergraduate B.S. degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Actuarial Science and B.A in Spanish, and is currently studying to receive a dual Master's degree in Business Administration and Leadership through the Augsburg MBA/MAL graduate program. Prior to her acceptance in the Augsburg MBA/MAL program, Laurie became a Certified Professional Project Manager through the University of St. Thomas Opus College Of Business and a Six Sigma Green Belt through Target Corporation. From 2013 to 2015, Laurie worked as a Data Analyst in Merchandising Business Intelligence for Target Corporation after completing a successful summer internship in 2012. At this time, Laurie works for Travelers Insurance as a Senior Actuarial Consultant supporting Business Insurance Loss Analytics and Reserving. She enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with her two golden retrievers, Duke and Denali.
