Zyzzogeton Presenter Deadline Mar. 10

Zyzzogeton 2016 Registration Deadline is March 10!

Zyzzogeton, Augsburg's annual student research symposium, will be held on Thursday, April 14, from 3-5 p.m. in Hoversten Chapel.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register and submit an abstract online at www.augsburg.edu/urgo by March 10 (click maroon box on right side of URGO homepage). Please work closely with your research mentors on your poster.

URGO and McNair will be hosting a Research Poster workshop where you can bring your working draft and receive one-on-one feedback and help on Wednesday, March 23, from 4:30-6 p.m. in SVE 204. We will be providing dinner, so please RSVP to urgo@augsburg.edu if you plan to come.

DUE TODAY: Application for Israel Fellowship

The MINNE Fellows program will select one Augsburg student for a free 10-day fellowship in Israel from May 2-13, 2016. The goal of the program is to foster greater understanding between people and to educate college students about the Holocaust. The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers. The visit to Israel will include a tour of Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust museum, additional Holocaust educational programming as well as touring the sites of Israel.

The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers.

-MINNE covers flight and land costs as well as granting students a $50/day per diem provided while the student is in Israel.
-Applicants must be U.S. citizens and registered for full time classes at Augsburg with at least one year left on campus. Students must be sophomores or above with a 3.0+ GPA.

Travelers EDGE Scholarship Opportunity

During the last 5 years, the Travelers EDGE program has provided professional development opportunities and scholarships to over 20 Augsburg students and right now we are beginning to recruit the next cohort of EDGE Scholars.

Up to 5 current first-year students will be named Travelers EDGE Scholars and will receive a $2,500 scholarship for the 16-17 academic year. They will have opportunity to explore careers in the Insurance and Financial Services Industry by participating in self-assessments, professional development workshops, job shadows, networking opportunities, and will also be invited to apply for selective internships at Travelers. Scholars who successfully complete the first year of the EDGE program in 2016-17 will be invited to apply for a second year of funding in the amount of $10,000.

Professional Development Opportunity at UHG

UnitedHealth Group's 2016 Campus Talent Summit provides first and second year students the opportunity to learn about career paths while building critical business skills for the future workforce. The program, which takes place April-August 2016, includes a corporate site visit, virtual mentoring program, and business focused webinars.

To be eligible to apply, students must be:

-Currently be a freshman or sophomore with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
-Majoring in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Business Administration, Computer Science, MIS or related business field.
-Demonstrate involvement in diversity/community activities and/or on-campus student organizations.
-Eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship, now or in the future, for employment-based work authorization
-Summit a resume and an unofficial transcript
-Complete a digital introduction
-Be able to participate in all 4 program segments

These awards recognize student leaders and student organizations for their innovative and outstanding leadership during this academic year. Recipients will be honored at the 17th Annual Augsburg Leadership Awards on Tuesday, April 5 from 5-7 pm in Hoversten Chapel.

All students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members are strongly encouraged to submit nominations; self-nominations are also encouraged. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 11 by 5:00 p.m.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2016

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting Sophomores for Fall 2016 admission. Eligible applicants will be Juniors Spring 2017and available to conduct research Summer 2017. We are particularly looking for students in STEM fields that are interested in pursuing doctoral degrees, but we will consider all majors EXCEPT most professional fields (including business, pre-law, pre-health).

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research and other scholarly activities. McNair provides coursework, workshops and advising in preparation for doctoral study. The program also assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2017.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Great Colleges to Work For Survey: Tell Us

As previously announced, Augsburg College is participating in the 2016 Great Colleges to Work For survey. The survey opens Monday, February 22 and will remain open until Friday, March 4. Eligible participants will receive an email from ModernThink which will contain a survey invitation and link to the survey.

Important things to note:
- Survey takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
- Your responses to the survey will be completely confidential. ModernThink LLC, an independent survey firm, will not provide Augsburg College with any information that would enable us to trace survey data back to any one individual.

Augsburg Senior Leadership Society

This year, Augsburg College is launching the Augsburg Senior Leadership Society. This society will recognize graduating seniors for their co-curricular leadership contributions during their tenure at Augsburg College.

To qualify, students must demonstrate growth and development in seven categories: Academic and Life Skills Competence, Civic Engagement, Critical Thinking, Faith and Values, Intentional Diversity, Leadership Exploration and Development, and Thoughtful Stewardship.

Students must be graduating seniors (April or December 2016), have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, be in good academic and conduct status with the College, have demonstrated growth in the areas above, and have demonstrated leadership contributions through engagement in student organizations, campus activities, or college-sponsored or college-affiliated programs.

A resume and essay must be turned into Michael Grewe (grewe@augsburg.edu) no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11.

The recipient of the Marina Christensen-Justice Award must have demonstrated a dedication to the community beyond the Augsburg College campus, working in solidarity with marginalized people, as characterized by the personal and professional life of Marina Christensen-Justice. This award is given to one Augsburg senior each year at Commencement.

Nominations will be judged on the following criteria:

Depth and breadth of community involvement off-campus,
Commitment to understanding of systemic roots of the issues being addressed,
Personal and professional commitment to work with marginalized communities,
Bold and courageous leadership,
and authentic and sustained relationships with community and issues.

2016 Nobel Peace Prize Forum News and Tickets

Nobel Peace Prize Forum Overview (and discounted tickets)

One of the criteria set out by Alfred Nobel for awarding the Nobel Peace Prize is for the holding and promotion of "Peace Congresses". The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is shaped from this vision. For over 27 years, the Forum has been one of only three programs officially associated with the Norwegian Nobel Institute (the two others are the Nobel Peace Center and the Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo). The Nobel Peace Prize Forum is hosted by Augsburg College and held annually in Minneapolis.

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum provides an important, highly visible international platform for advancing the work of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates. By bringing together laureates, leaders in government, business, academia and civil society to think together and take action – the Forum's work advances dialogue around drivers of conflict, emerging threats to peace and security, and situations that may have fallen off the international radar.

The Nobel Peace Prize Forum focuses on five key areas critical to sustainable peacemaking and peacebuilding, with an aim to advance dialogue and action on:

1. Disarmament
2. Poverty Reduction and Food Security
3. Environmental Sustainability
4. Human Rights
5. Global Health Systems

These core areas are also explored through a set of crosscutting issues including gender, inter-religious dialogue and education. The catalytic work of the Forum continues throughout the year across smaller dialogue initiatives, the "PeaceitForward Campaign" and an educational and outreach platform that advances the Forum's peacemaking and peacebuilding efforts.

Stakeholders & Beneficiaries: Nobel Peace Prize Laureates; youth across the globe, including students; policy makers, including governments and international organizations; academic professionals and institutions; civil society leaders and activists; business and private sector actors; those living in fragile, conflict and post-conflict situations.

The Forum gathers a diverse range of individuals and organizations that do not always share the same space or understand each other: e.g. policy makers and academics; business leaders and policy makers; and established professionals and youth (who often bring innovation and renewed energy/optimism).

Nobel Peace Prize Forum Themes (2016 & 2017): The Nobel Peace Prize Forum will be centered around the five core pillars, with a specific focus each year on work of 1-2 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. The 2016 Forum will concentrate on the work of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi (2014), who has dedicated his life to ending child labor and child trafficking. It will also look at the peace and security implications of, and connections between, human trafficking, migration, refugees and climate change. The 2017 Forum will focus on the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet (2015 Nobel Peace Prize Laureates) and effective strategies for durable national dialogue processes. The Forum will extend an invitation to Malala Yousafzai for 2018.

The Forum Dates: In 2016, the Forum will take place from June 6-8. In 2017, the Forum will take place around the same timeframe: late May or early June. The 2017 dates will be confirmed by Spring 2016. The annual date changed due to a shift in leadership at the Norwegian Nobel Institute to accommodate the Nobel Institute's calendar.

A Delegates System: Each participant who comes to the Forum will be considered a "delegate": someone who is there – either individually or as part of a group - to peace-build and take action around the 5 core pillars. Each forum has space for 650 in-person delegates, with additional spots available through live streaming. Some academic partners are now instituting a competitive delegates process for their representation at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum (e.g. Villanova University and Sacramento State University.) The Forum encourages academic partners to plan Spring or Summer courses around this experience.

The Peace Scholars Program is a cooperative program for students enrolled at the Norwegian-Lutheran Schools; 2016 Artists & Exhibits; 2016 Expedition by the Outward Bound Center for Peacebuilding NYC (cooperating with local Outward Bound branch in Twin Cities).

This site-specific installation combines prints and paintings addressing the social concept of race and the issue of socio-racial classifications.

Tavera is an artist, curator, researcher, and advocate for equal access to opportunities. Her bilingual / bicultural upbringing between Mexico and Minnesota has greatly influenced her work experience, writing, and visual art practice.

This exhibition is organized as part of the Guerrilla Girls Twin Cities Takeover, highlighting gender and racial inequalities, taking on stereotypes and hypocrisies, and promoting artistic expression by the often overlooked and underrepresented. Art Club Art Sale - Support Local Art 3/10 @ 5:30 p.m.

The Augsburg Art Club is hosting it's first annual Art Sale! Original artwork created by Augsburg students will be on sale from March 6th to the 31st in the Fish Bowl Gallery. To purchase art on the spot, please attend our reception on March 10th from 5:30 to 7:30pm in the Fish Bowl Gallery. If you are unable to attend the reception, head on over to the Fish Bowl anytime during the show for more information, or contact Devin Johnston at johnston@augsburg.edu. Artwork will range in price from $10-$50, cash or check only. We hope to see you there!
