THURSDAY: Michael Lansing's Call to Scholarship

This Thursday, join the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the Christensen Center for Vocation (CCV) for a time of reflection, recognition, and celebration of professor Michael Lansing's call to scholarship.

The Associate Professor of History will showcase his new book, "Insurgent Democracy: The Nonpartisan League in North American Politics," and share his ideas on what it means to be a teacher-scholar-citizen.

The title of Michael's talk is "Insurgent Democracy: New Visions of the Nonpartisan League."

Thursday, January 28
4-5:30pm in OGC 100

There will be refreshments before and a book signing after! All are welcome.

Fast Approaching: URGO Phase 1 Deadline is Feb. 2

The 2016 URGO Summer Research information packet and application materials are now available at the URGO website (www.augsburg.edu/urgo)! Students can apply to conduct 100, 200, or 400 hours of paid research over the summer under the mentorship of a faculty member.

Phase 1 of the application will be due February 2. Phase 2, which includes a detailed description of the proposed research, will be due February 23.

Free MOOC on Accessibility

Free MOOC on Accessibility: Designing and Teaching Courses for All Learners

The Accessibility at Augsburg Committee invites the Augsburg Community to sign up for this interesting MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) that is open to anyone, anywhere. It begins February 22nd. This MOOC will provide a great review or a great introduction to the Section 508 accessibility standards that apply to higher education. It also provides an opportunity to experience one of the latest trends in higher education – MOOCs!

Accessibility: Designing and Teaching Courses for All Learners is a free 6-week professional development course available that will help you gain a better understanding of accessibility as a civil rights issue and develop the knowledge and skills you need to design learning experiences that promote inclusive learning environments.

During this six-week course, you'll learn how to:

-Recognize and address challenges faced by students with disabilities related to access, success, and completion.
-Articulate faculty and staff roles in reducing barriers for students with disabilities.
-Apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in designing accessible learning experiences.
-Analyze the benefits of Backward Design when developing learning experiences.
-Use Section 508 standards and WCAG 2.0 guidelines to create accessible courses.
-Determine which tools and techniques are appropriate based on course content.

You will have the opportunity to earn badges that recognize your mastery of these competencies.

Audience: Anyone may enroll and participate in the MOOC. It has been designed for faculty and staff in higher education at any type or level of institution.

Students: Apply for 10-Day Fellowship in Israel

The MINNE (Minne means "memory" in Norwegian) Fellows program will select one Augsburg student for a free 10-day fellowship in Israel from May 2-13, 2016. The goal of the program is to foster greater understanding between people and to educate college students about the Holocaust. The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers. The visit to Israel will include a tour of Yad Vashem, Israel's national Holocaust museum, additional Holocaust educational programming as well as touring the sites of Israel.

The Minneapolis Jewish Federation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas (JCRC) will arrange for fellows to tour Israel with Israeli peers.

MINNE covers flight and land costs as well as granting students a $50/day per diem provided while the student is in Israel.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and registered for full time classes at Augsburg with at least one year left on campus. Students must be sophomores or above with a 3.0+ GPA.

Register for WISE Conference by Jan 27

The 2016 WISE Conference (Workshop on Intercultural Skills Enhancement), held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on February 3-5, 2016, is four-day professional development institute focused on helping faculty leaders, program coordinators, and other faculty and staff develop the knowledge and skills they need in order to help study abroad students develop intercultural skills and awareness.

Call for Nominations: CTL Faculty and Staff Awards

The Office of Academic Affairs and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite your nominations for the 2016 awards for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning.

Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through awards for TEACHING, SCHOLARSHIP, or SERVICE.

All full-time faculty or staff who have been employed at the college for at least three years are eligible for the awards.

Paid Internships in China

Augsburg graduates and graduating seniors (May 2016) are invited to apply for a one-academic year Internship at UIC. Applications for the Intern position must be completed and submitted to UIC's International Development Office no later than the 14th of February 2016.

Requirements for the Application include:

1. Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree in any relevant programme.

2. A full transcript of academic work completed with a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.

3. Two letters of recommendation from academic staff supporting the application.

4. A full personal resume including an expression of interest in a position in a specific programme which is offered as a major at UIC. The applicant should articulate the skills and experience he/she would bring to this specific area of the UIC academic programme. General Education is also a viable academic area in which to pursue an Intern position. See the following website for more information on the academic curriculum at UIC: http://uic.edu.hk/en/

5. Additional information of activities, working experiences, travel and special strengths including computer/technology skills which are important in assuming the role of an Intern.

6. Agreement to enroll in a specially designed "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme"(see Compensation for the Intern Position at UIC below for details) offered by the Centre for Chinese Language and Culture (CLC) at UIC during their year of residence at UIC.

7. An interview conducted by the Director of International Education at the home institution in which the applicant is enrolled. It is the applicant's responsibility to schedule this interview with the Director of International Education at his/her home institution.


Compensation for the Intern position at UIC:

1. A monthly housing allowance (RMB1000, for example, for shared apartments at Horizon Cove) will be granted; health insurance; and a round-trip economy air ticket from home country to China of up to RMB11, 000 on a reimbursement basis (the China-home country ticket is given upon successful completion of contract) and ferry or bus fare from airport of arrival to Zhuhai;

2. A monthly stipend of RMB 6000 ($950 US) is paid from assumption of duties in August/September to the end of June. During this period Interns are involved in assigned duties and organizing activities (see requirements and responsibilities of Interns below).

3. A "Chinese Language, Culture, History and Development Programme" consisting of (a) two Chinese language classes of 3 hours weekly in both semesters; (b) lectures/seminars on Chinese culture, history and development at fortnightly intervals, 2 to 3 hours each, 3 to 4 times per semester; and (c) 2-4 visits to historical sites and museums in nearby locations to appreciate the great depth of Chinese history and culture.
