It is time to go through your office files and office storerooms and purge confidential documents according to your retention rules. We will bring a document destruction service to campus next week. Place a facilities work request by end of day TODAY to request pick-up of your confidential documents for shredding. If you have questions about what is confidential, please contact your manager. Sorry, we cannot accommodate personal shredding.

McNair Scholars Program Recruiting for Fall 2014

Augsburg College's TRIO McNair Scholars Program is recruiting for Fall 2014 admission. The goal of the program is to prepare Scholars for graduate study through academics, involvement in undergraduate research, and other scholarly activities. McNair teams Scholars with other academically strong students who aspire to graduate study, and helps them to achieve that dream.

The McNair Scholars Program works with students who are members of groups underrepresented in graduate education and who exhibit strong academic potential. The program provides coursework, workshops, and advising in preparation for graduate study. Also, the program assists with securing admission to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs. Students will acquire the research skills necessary to succeed in graduate school through a paid research internship ($4000) with an Augsburg faculty member during the Summer of 2015.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Therefore, to be eligible, students must be first-generation (neither parent graduated from a four-year college) AND low-income OR may be persons from groups underrepresented in graduate education. The Department of Education defines these groups as African-American, American Indian, Alaskan Native, and Hispanic/Latino. Additionally, applicants must be either U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Zyzzogeton Registration Deadline March 14

Augsburg's annual student research festival, Zyzzogeton, will be held on April 11 from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton by March 14. Poster and abstract submission directions are detailed at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton as well.

If you need help creating your poster, URGO and McNair will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, March 5 at 4:30 p.m. in Sverdrup 205.

Faculty: Host Int'l Programs in Your Classes

Staff in the Office of International Programs has now visited or scheduled a visit for over 20 different classes, to spread the word to your students about the many study and internship abroad options available to students -- was yours one of them?

If not, we would love the chance to address your students, in particular to emphasize the upcoming **March 14** application deadline.

Please review your plans for class over the next few weeks to see if you can spare 5-10 minutes during one class meeting for a message about study abroad. Once you've got a preferred day/time, you can request a visit through this online form:

Nominations Open for Augsburg Leadership Awards

Nominations are open for the 2013-2014 Augsburg Leadership Awards through THIS Friday, March 7 at NOON! These awards recognize student leaders and student groups for their innovative and outstanding leadership during the academic year. All students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members are strongly encouraged to submit nominations; self-nominations are also encouraged. Practice Spanish with us on Thursday

Looking for a chance to improve your Spanish conversation skills? Then we've got just the thing for you - Spanish Conversation group!

Please join us as we gather to chat in Spanish, laugh, and have a bit of fun. From beginning to advanced, all levels are welcome! We meet every Thursday in the Riverside Room, 2nd floor Christensen, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Signs will be posted. Join us for 10 minutes or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Attend 3 sessions and receive a free T-shirt that says, "Augsburg Habla Español."

Marina Christensen Justice Award Nominations

The Marina Christensen-Justice Award is presented to one graduating senior at commencement each year who best exemplifies Augsburg's motto "Education for Service." The student must have demonstrated a dedication to community involvement as characterized by the personal and professional life of Marina Christensen-Justice, who courageously and effectively reached out to disadvantaged people and communities.

Nomination should include:

Name of graduating senior
Major
Person who is submitting the nomination

Description of the ways that the student has been involved in the off-campus community during his/her time at Augsburg though service-learning experiences, internships, volunteer experiences,the Bonner Program, etc.

Teaching Temps - Tabling Today

Are you looking for employment? Stop by and visit with representatives from Teaching Temps, Inc. on Wednesday, March 5 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Christensen Center.

Teaching Temps is hiring for Early Childhood Teachers/Assistants/Aides, as well as Licensed K-12 Substitute Teachers. You do not have to have a license to teach to work in many of these positions. At Teaching Temps, Inc. they provide new teachers with teaching experience at a variety of levels, networking in area schools, and a competitive wage. They service over a 100 charter, private, and public schools in the 7 county metro area. Many different factors can qualify you to substitute for our schools, including credit hours in applicable college courses and experience working in schools or day cares. Many of their teachers start as an early childhood teacher or paraprofessional, and then transition into licensed teaching. Teaching Temps eases the transition from student to teacher.

Internship Info Session - Strommen Center 3/10 4:30 p.m.

The Office of International Programs, in partnership with the Strommen Center for Meaningful Work, invites you to learn more about international internships! Build a global skill set and earn academic credit on Augsburg's own internship programs in Latin America and Africa - or live, learn and work in another location via a partner program. We will discuss how internships fit into your academic plan, why interning abroad is a good choice, and financial aid and scholarship options.

Summer and fall internships are still available!
Come meet with Andrea Dvorak on March 10 from 4:30-5:00 p.m. in the Strommen Center, main floor of Christensen Center. Yummy snacks will be provided.

Ben Stroud Reading, Thursday, March 6

ACTC presents writer Ben Stroud, who will read from his work on Thursday, March 6, 7 p.m., at the Augsburg College Barnes & Noble bookstore. Stroud's short story collection "Byzantium" won the 2012 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Bakeless Fiction Prize and was published by Graywolf in 2013. The book was selected as a Best Summer Book by the Chicago Tribune and Publisher's Weekly, and as a Best Book of the Month by Amazon. Free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing.

Staff Appreciation Event Set for March 11

Staff members are invited to join Staff Senate in a celebration of Augsburg College staff. We will honor those who celebrated their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th anniversaries in 2013 as well as the Outstanding Staff Award winners.

Augsburg Annual Powwow - March 29

The Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) would like to personally invite you to come join us at the Powwow on March 29th! This is a great opportunity for you to learn a little about American Indian culture and traditions and it's FREE!

"Grand Entries", which are the start of a dance session are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. and if you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to see a grand entry, however you are invited to come anytime throughout the day. We will start at 1 p.m. and end at 9 p.m. There will be Craft Vendors, information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos for sale and a lot of fun and opportunity to learn. Depression and Anxiety Screening TODAY

The Center for Counseling and Health Promotion is hosting a Depression and Anxiety Screening TODAY - Wednesday, March 5 from 11:30-1:30 in the Christensen Center Lobby. The following services will be offered:

*Free 10-minute mental health screening
*Meet face to face with a counselor to discuss the results
*Receive information about depression, anxiety, and other common college student concerns
*Learn about on- and off-campus treatment resources
*If you are interested in receiving counseling services through CCHP, you can schedule your first appointment during the tabling event, even if you do not want to do the screen!
*Paws for Learning will be at the tabling event! Come and see the therapy dogs!

If you plan to participate in Zyzzogeton this year or will be presenting at another conference, please join Tina Tavera of McNair and Kirsten O'Brien of URGO for a poster-making info session Wednesday, March 5 at 4:30 in Sverdrup 205. We will discuss content, layout, and design. You will also have the opportunity to work on your poster and receive feedback. Posters are due March 14, so now is the best time to start!
