Zyzzogeton Registration Deadline March 14

Augsburg's annual student research festival, Zyzzogeton, will be held on April 11 from 2-4 p.m. in the Oren Gateway Atrium.

Students who plan to present their research or creative activity at this poster session will need to register at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton by March 14. Poster and abstract submission directions are detailed at www.augsburg.edu/urgo/zyzzogeton as well.

If you need help creating your poster, URGO and McNair will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday, March 5 from 4:30-6 p.m. in Sverdrup 205.

Fac/Staff: Stress Break - March 5

Do you wonder if winter will ever end? Is it causing you stress? To help combat the stress, faculty and staff are invited to a stress break. Ambiente Gallerie will be on campus again providing free chair massages for our faculty and staff.

In addition to massages, there will be light healthy refreshments available, so plan to stop over and enjoy a stress break. You needn't sign up for a massage to enjoy the healthy snack break.

You must register for the massages and there are limited spaces available. To register go to the Human Resources Moodle page, go to the "March 5 - Employee Massage Sign-Up" appointment scheduler located at the top of the page. From there, you will be able to click on one of the available appointment slots listed. Please note: the "teachers" for the times listed are not the massage therapists that will be providing the massages. Massages will be given by fully licensed massage therapists.

The Fall 14, Spring 15 and Summer 15 WEC course offerings will be available to view online through the "Course Search" in "AugNet Services/Records & Registration" on Monday, March 10th. Course offerings in the DAY and new AU program are currently available to view.

Summer/Fall 14 Registration Begins 4/7
Be sure to register for courses as soon as your registration window opens. Your registration window is noted in "AugNet Services/Records & Registration".

Important WEC Transition Notes
-For Fall 14 forward courses are no longer cross-listed in DAY and WEC. If you would like to take a Fall 14 DAY course (meeting weekly in the evenings or weekly during the day) look for those courses in the DAY schedule. You are able to register for Fall 14 DAY and WEC courses as soon as your registration window opens. It is important that you register early since cross-listing is no longer reserving seats for you.
-You can also register for Fall 14 courses in the new AU program when crossover registration begins on 4/23. AU courses are offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in a hybrid format alternating face-to-face meetings with online meetings. AU on-site weeks are noted on the 14-17 Academic Calendar.

Career Quick Stop This Week

The Strommen Career and Internship Center offers walk-in hours which are meant for quick career question and short resume reviews. Appointments will be limited to 15 minutes and students will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Event Announcements

Ben Stroud Reading, Thursday, March 6

ACTC presents writer Ben Stroud, who will read from his work on Thursday, March 6, 7 p.m., at the Augsburg College Barnes & Noble bookstore. Stroud's short story collection "Byzantium" won the 2012 Bread Loaf Writers' Conference Bakeless Fiction Prize and was published by Graywolf in 2013. The book was selected as a Best Summer Book by the Chicago Tribune and Publisher's Weekly, and as a Best Book of the Month by Amazon. Free and open to the public. Books will be available for sale and signing.

Annual Augsburg Powwow

The Augsburg Indigenous Student Association (AISA) would like to personally invite you to come join us at the Powwow this year! This is a great opportunity for you to learn a little about American Indian culture and traditions; and it's FREE! "Grand Entries," which are the start of a dance session are at 1 PM and 6 PM and if you haven't been to a Powwow before we would encourage you to see a grand entry, however you are invited to come anytime throughout the day. We will start at 1 PM and end at 9 PM. There will be Craft Vendors, information vendors about community resources/organizations, concession stand with Indian tacos for sale and a lot of fun and opportunity to learn. Please join us. Celebration: Dr. Brian Greening

Please join us for some cake to celebrate as on Thursday, February 20, 2014, TRIO-McNair Scholars Assistant Director Brian Greening successfully defended his dissertation in American Studies at Saint Louis University.

Titled "Representing New Orleans: Race, Space, and the Spectacle of Progress in the Crescent City Since 1965," the project is a social and political history of contemporary New Orleans focused on the Crescent City's monumental post-war building program, in particular the Louisiana Superdome. As Brian argues, in constructing the Superdome, the city's elite charted an at-all-costs building model for New Orleans, all while fashioning a malleable, raceless monument for themselves. What they created, was, in effect, a spectacle of progress--an image of social, cultural, and economic prosperity. Bolstered by a new highway system, a rebuilt riverfront, and a sparkling new stadium, New Orleans in the mid-1970s took on the appearance of a modern metropolis. However, the image proved to be superficial in that it veiled New Orleans's dramatic population shifts, radical economic transformations, and looming environmental dangers. Hurricane Katrina laid bare these problems when, during a week span in late summer of 2005, the Superdome became a staging ground where the ill effects of New Orleans's postindustrial turn played out.

Using the Superdome as a primary object of analysis, Brian's project reveals how constructing the stadium paralleled other, similarly spectacular building projects in the years that followed, leaving behind a residue of artificial progress that remains in New Orleans to this day.

Depression and Anxiety Screening Tomorrow

The Center for Counseling and Health Promotion is hosting the second of two Depression and Anxiety Screening Days tomorrow - Wednesday, March 5 from 11:30-1:30 in the Christenson Center Lobby. The following services will be offered:
*Free 10-minute mental health screening
*Meet face to face with a counselor to discuss the results
*Receive information about depression, anxiety, and other common college student concerns
*Learn about on- and off-campus treatment resources
*If you are interested in receiving counseling services through CCHP, you can schedule your first appointment during the tabling event, even if you do not want to do the screen!
*On Wednesday, March 5, Paws for Learning will be at the tabling event! Come and see the therapy dogs!

MN Sure Information Session on March 18

NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Minnesota will be holding an informational session on MN Sure. This event will be held Tuesday, March 18 at Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, 5025 Knox Avenue South, from 7 to 8 pm. General information on MN Sure services will be provided, as well as helpful information for individuals currently using mental health and/or addictions services. There is no charge, but you can register at the NAMI Minnesota Web site (www.namihelps.org).

Keeping Track of Auggies

Augsburg Student Named Spring Lobby Weekend Fellow

Yemi Melka, a third year student, was just named to the Spring Lobby Weekend Fellowship program. The program brings together students and staff at the Friends Committee on National Legislation to research policy and inform other to make change and repeal policies that prevent peace. Yemi will take part in a roundtable discussion and will be formally recognized during the Spring Lobby Weekend. She will be involved with planning campus and community organizing for repealing the Authorization for the Use of Military Force bill (AUMF). Yemi is a Chemistry and International Relations major, a member of the Honors Program and a Sundquist Scholar. She has also participated in the Peace Scholars Program and the Interfaith Scholars Program here on campus. She will be participating as a Model UN Head Delegate this spring.
