U of M Conducting Emergency Training on Aug. 14

AUGSBURG COMMUNITY - PLEASE BE AWARE OF EMERGENCY SIRENS AND VEHICLES IN THE AREA NEXT WEDNESDAY. THIS IF FOR U of M TRAINING ONLY.

University of Minnesota Emergency Training Exercise Wednesday, August 14, 2013
Regis Center for Art (Riverside Ave. and 21st Ave. South)

The University of Minnesota will hold an emergency training exercise on the West Bank campus beginning at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 14. The exercise will take place at the two Regis Center for Art buildings, located at 405 and 418 21st Ave. S., Minneapolis.

If you see or hear police activity at this location on Wednesday, August 14, please know that there is NOT an actual emergency taking place. This is an exercise to prepare public safety personnel to respond if there were an actual emergency.

West Bank residents and visitors should expect the following on Wednesday, August 14:

- Extra police activity on the University of Minnesota campus
- Law enforcement and emergency response vehicles parked in the University lot at Riverside Ave. and 21st Ave S. and nearby
- Emergency sirens, announcements and other noises related to the exercise

The following streets will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Wednesday, August 14:

- 21st Ave. S. from S. 4th St. to Riverside Ave.
- S. 5th St. from 21st Ave. S. to 22nd Ave. S.
- University of Minnesota parking lots – Lot 94 and Lot C-95 (off Riverside Avenue S. between 21st and 22nd Avenues S.)

Participating agencies include the University of Minnesota Police Department, U of M Department of Emergency Management, Minneapolis Police Department, Minneapolis Fire Department, Minneapolis SWAT, Minneapolis Public Works, East Metro SWAT, Metro Transit PD, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Hennepin County Medical Center and the FBI.

This exercise will allow multiple agencies to test and practice working together so they will continue to be well prepared when responding to major emergencies.

Fac/Staff Parking Permit Pickup

All faculty and staff who have registered for parking permits, please come to dispatch in the Urn/Mort lobby to pick up your permits.

Permits will be available for pickup 2 business days after you have registered and paid.

Please bring a photo ID in order to pick up your permit.

Undergraduate Day Student Parking

Parking permit sale dates and cost information for FALL 2013 is in the attached link. Sales are NOT open yet, please use the information to find your specific registration date.

Please be aware that due to academic schedule changes and the increase in summer activities, Public Safety will require parking permits to be displayed throughout the summer in 2014. Any 2013-14 academic year permit will be acceptable. For example, if a student purchases a fall 2013 permit, that same permit can be used throughout the summer at no extra cost to the student. More information regarding summer 2014 will be available next spring

Hands-on Agresso Training - Aug. 26 & Sept. 13

Budget Managers,

The Administrative Accounting and Finance office will be hosting two hands-on Agresso training sessions. We'll discuss how coding deposits and expenses impact your budget, where you are versus budget/outlook, and how to use Agresso web to find out.

These two training sessions will be in the Sverdrup 201 computer lab between 2-4 p.m. Our first session is Monday, August 26 and a second (identical) session will be Friday, September 13.

Remember this is a hands-on event where you will be probing the money coming in and going out. So bring your cost center number and questions!

Voicemail Maintenance - Aug. 14

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, until approximately 7:00 p.m., voicemail services will be intermittently unavailable on campus due to scheduled maintenance. During this time, callers will be unable to leave messages and users will be unable to access their messages.

The Augsburg Booth and State Fair Training

Two more opportunities for a brief training and to pick up your ticket/s for the State Fair.

Tuesday, August 13 at 9:00 a.m. in OGC 300 (no R.S.V.P. required) OR Thursday, August 15 from 6-9 (R.S.V.P. is required; dinner is provided and an opportunity to thank the donors to Augsburg is also an option). OGC 100 is the meeting place for this training.

This training is not required, but recommended. If you cannot attend, please contact me so I can send you your ticket. ext. 1525 or herron@augsburg.edu

Raffle: Wall of Wine to Benefit Rotary Club

Please support the community-based service work of the West St. Paul-Mendota Heights Rotary Club by purchasing a raffle ticket. Each $10 ticket is a chance to win a grand prize of 30 bottles of wine and a wine chiller. Second prize is 10 bottles of wine.

All proceeds go to support Dakota County-based nonprofits, schools, and projects, and to support Rotary International projects. Each year, the Rotary Club serves meals 10 times at Loaves & Fishes, sponsors and hosts an ethics program for 60 formal and informal student leaders at Henry Sibley High School, participates in the Adopt-A-Road program, and makes direct contributions to organizations that provide emergency food, shelter, mental health and domestic violence prevention services, and more.

To arrange to purchase a ticket, contact Stephanie Weiss, director of news and media services, at weisss@augsburg.edu or x 1476 to coordinate meeting on campus to purchase a ticket (or many tickets!). If the winner is on the Augsburg College campus, I'll deliver your loot on Sept. 9.

New International Student Welcome Dinner Hosts

The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Office is currently looking for hosts who are interested hosting a welcome dinner for a small group (usually 3-5) of incoming international students between 5 and 8 p.m., Friday, August 30. Hosts will need to provide transportation back and forth between school and their homes. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Jie He at he@augsburg.edu. Keeping Track of Auggies

Augsburg Students Present at MathFest

Three Augsburg College mathematics majors, HeeChan Kang, Andrew Walsh, and Emma Winegar, attended MathFest 2013, the largest annual summertime meeting of mathematicians, organized by the Mathematical Association of America and held in Hartford, Connecticut.

The students gave a presentation on part of their summer undergraduate research titled "Analysis of Laguerre's Method Applied to Find the Roots of Unity." This work was supported by Augsburg's URGO office and NSF's CSUMS grant through the University of St. Thomas.
