Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Crime Warning from MPD

November 19th 2012: Sexual Assault

The following crime alert was issued by the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD). This incident did not involve an Augsburg student and did not take place on the Augsburg campus.

According to the statement from the MPD:

November 19, 2012 (MINNEAPOLIS): At 7 a.m., today, officers from the First Precinct of the Minneapolis Police Department responded to the area of West River Parkway and 27th Avenue South on a sexual assault. Officers learned that an adult female victim was walking to St. Catherine’s University near Riverside Park when she was approached by a male suspect. The suspect asked the victim for money. Seconds later, the suspect forced the victim to walk to a wooded area nearby. Once in the wooded area, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim before the victim fled from the area on foot. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The suspect was described as a black male, 5’ 5” tall, 35 to 40 years old with an unshaven scruffy beard. The suspect was described as having a medium- to heavy-build and was wearing a navy blue jacket with a zipper.

If you have any information about this crime or believe you may have witnessed something in relation to this crime, please contact the Minneapolis Police Department at (612) 692-TIPS (8477).

Augsburg College believes that descriptors alone are not a valid reason to profile or cast suspicion on any individual. They are included here because they may reasonably assist in identifying the perpetrators of this incident.

SAFETY TIPS
• Public Safety Escorts are available 24/7 by calling 612-330-1717.
• Avoid shortcuts or walking alone at night.
• Stay on populated, well-lit streets. Avoid shrubbery, dark areas near buildings and other places an attacker might hide.
• Don't wear headphones. They block your ability to hear someone approach you.
• Look around as you walk and be aware of your surroundings. Make it difficult for anyone to take you by surprise. Walk confidently at a steady pace.
