Biomedical Ethics Summer Research Fellowship

On behalf of the Mayo Clinic, URGO announces the 2013 Vann Fellowship for summer undergraduate research in biomedical ethics! This fellowship is highly competitive and each college may only endorse two applicants. Applications for Augsburg's internal competition are due December 7, 2012.

Program details:
• Work with physician and research mentors within Mayo's Program in Professionalism and Ethics
• 8-10 weeks of full-time research
• $5,000 stipend
• Research topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Clinical ethics
- Informed patient consent, competence, and dementia
- Advanced directives, surrogate decision-makers, cultural values
- Ethical issues in end-of-life care and life-sustaining treatments
- Ethics in biomedical research, stem-cell research, and transplants

Qualifications:
• Enrolled in undergraduate courses for the fall of 2013
• Strong interest in biomedical ethics and/or clinical ethics (students with any major may apply)

Apply for a Udall Scholarship - Up to $5,000

In 2013, the national Udall Foundation expects to award 50 scholarships of up to $5,000 and 50 honorable mentions to sophomore- and junior-level college students committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care.

Scholarships are offered in any of three categories:

1) To students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, and other related fields; or

2) To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal sovereignty, tribal governance, tribal law, Native American education, Native American justice, natural resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, Native American economic development, and other areas affecting Native American communities; or

3) To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care, including health care administration, social work, medicine, dentistry, counseling, and research into health conditions affecting Native American communities, and other related fields.

Funeral Service for Deidre Middleton

Please note that information about today's 1:30 p.m. funeral service for Deidre Middleton has been posted on the Inside Augsburg calendar. Those of us who have been at the College for some time cherish the opportunity we had to work with and know Deidre during her time at Augsburg -- as a member of the academic advising team and, before that, as a Weekend and Evening College student. Please share this information with colleagues who were here during Deidre's tenure and may want to attend the service.

Nabo is offering a meal replacement special, one meal plan meal per week can be used to purchase the special of the day at Nabo from 1:30 p.m. to close. Hot apple cider is now available at Nabo!

Continental Breakfast: 9:45-11 a.m.
Lunch: 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Pizza, Sandwich, Salad Bar: 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Murphy Square Now Accepting Submissions

Augsburg's Literary and Visual Arts Journal is accepting submissions NOW through January 18, 2013 for the 2013 edition of Murphy Square.

We accept all submissions of art, poetry, or prose as long as they are original works by an enrolled Augsburg student, staff or faculty member.

All art that is not digital MUST be photographed and formatted at a resolution of 300ppi. Photography and digital art must also be high resolution at 300ppi. Visual arts submissions must be submitted in either .jpg or .tif format. No .pdf or .psd files will be accepted.

Any work of prose or poetry must have a title and must be submitted in a Microsoft Word .doc or .docx file or .rtf for a non-Word document. The file name MUST match the name of the work. Only one piece per file; please do not save two or more works in a single file as it gets confusing during the selection process!

Email all material as attachments to murphysquare@augsburg.edu. All work should be anonymous (no names in documents). Include your name, email address, campus box number, and the title of your attached pieces in the body of your email.

Event Announcements

Seward Winter Frolic - Saturday, Dec. 1

The Seward Winter Frolic will be held this Saturday, December 1, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. along East Franklin Avenue. The event is hosted by the Seward Civic and Commerce Association and the Seward Neighborhood Group. It is a terrific opportunity to support Seward's vibrant small businesses and local artists. All day long businesses will be offering specials and local artists will be will be displaying and selling their work at several venues. An art car parade will start at noon at the Seward Coop. At 5:00 p.m., there will be a gathering in Triangle Park (26th Ave. and E. Franklin Avenue) to light up the park and to celebrate the warm community spirit of the Seward Neighborhood. Velkommen Jul - Friday, November 30

Velkommen Jul is a celebration at Augsburg to welcome the Advent and Christmas seasons. It provides an opportunity for alumni, friends, faculty, students and the greater Augsburg community to come together and celebrate the Scandinavian heritage on which Augsburg was founded. The celebration begins at 10:20 a.m. with an Advent worship service in Hoversten Chapel followed by a reception and boutique in Christensen Center at 11:00 a.m. Please join us and wear your Norwegian sweater!

The Social Science (and Humanities) departments of Political Science, Economics, and History invite you to their annual Christmas party. ADSG Discrimination Awareness Events

Have you experienced prejudice, exclusion, or isolation on campus? Let us know so we can help.

The Augsburg Day Student Government Student Concerns Committee is holding discrimination awareness events on November 29 and December 10 from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Student Lounge, Christensen Center. Student Government members will be tabling in the Christensen Center in the upcoming weeks to receive initial concerns and answer any questions about the events. Additionally, instances of discrimination can always be reported at:

Advent Vespers: Want to Volunteer? Need Tickets?

DETAILS:
Augsburg College's annual Advent Vespers will be held this coming Friday, November 30, and Saturday, December 1, at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis. Services are at 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Friday and 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.

TICKETS:
If you still need tickets for a service please stop by the music office or call (612-330-1265). The 2 & 5 p.m. services on Saturday, December 1 are FULL.

HELP USHER:
Please contact me at schwartz1@augsburg.edu with your name and availability. Help is still needed most for the 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. services on Saturday, but I will gladly take any help offered. Duties consist of handing out programs, collecting tickets, and organizing the space between services. FREE MEAL FOR ANYONE HELPING WITH TWO OR MORE SERVICES!
