Drop-in Tutoring Closed 11/21 - 11/24
For the upcoming Thanksgiving break, drop-in tutoring support sessions for MIS 260, BIO 151, CHM 115 and CHM 351 will be canceled starting on Wednesday, November 21, and will resume as usual on Sunday, November 25.
Congratulations to Augsburg Film Students
The 2nd Annual ACTC Film Festival on Wednesday, November 14, highlighted the work of several Augsburg film students. There were sixty-two film submissions for the festival and sixteen were chosen for showing on the big screen at St. Anthony Main. Nine Augsburg student films were selected for the festival, among those from all five ACTC campuses.

So far this term, tutors in the Writing Lab have conducted almost 800 conferences with students on their writing assignments. Join them!

New Youth Work Class
YFM205: Youth-led Community Organizing
Do you value the voice of youth? Do you believe they have a lot to offer? Would you like to learn how to empower young people to make positive change in their communities? If so, then this class is for you. In this 0.5 credit course we will study and experience the history, theory, and practice of youth-led community organizing.
This course is listed under the Spring semester Religion courses but is not a course about religious youth work. It is open to all students with an interest in working with youth of any background.
It will meet MWF 9:10 a.m. - 10:10 a.m. from January 14- March 1. Contact Professor Jeremy Myers (myers@augsburg.edu) with any questions.
Nominate Kemper Scholar Candidates
Augsburg College is one of a selective group of schools awarding Kemper Scholarships to one student each year. The program involves two summer internships with pay, financial aid during the school year, and a sophisticated mentoring program for students coming from the liberal arts.
As faculty complete advising, please consider nominating first year students (only) whom you identify as academically able, mature, and potential applicants.

2013 Annual Benefit Enrollment
This message is intended for all benefit-eligible faculty and staff. All regular faculty and staff working .50 (3/6) full-time equivalency (FTE) or greater are considered benefit eligible.
Annual benefit enrollment is from Wednesday, November 7 through Wednesday, November 21. All forms must be turned in no later than 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21. You may drop your forms off in the HR office (Memorial Hall, Room 19) or fax to 612-330-1443.
In the past, we have mailed an updated benefit booklet to your home. However, in keeping with the College's cost saving and green initiatives, we will not be mailing you a copy of the booklet. A link to the electronic copy of the booklet is contained below.
*Please remember that you must make your flexible spending account and health savings account elections every year. Your election from last year WILL NOT carry over into 2013. You must complete the universal enrollment form to make your election for 2013.*

Wow - $3,547 Raised for Campus Kitchen
Wow. Yesterday, for Give to the Max Day, we received $2,047, far exceeding our goal. When matched by Finnegans Beer/Community Fund, this turns into $3,547, or approximately 236 turkeys.
Obviously, though, we won't be blowing it all on poultry, but instead will use it to make Thanksgiving happen in the neighborhood, support our weekly cooking classes, and will help kick off the Augsburg College Student Food Shelf. Thanks to all the individuals and groups that made this happen. This has been a remarkable effort.
So let's celebrate over dinner! The biggest event that the campaign supports is the Brian Coyle Multicultural Dinner tonight (Friday) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Come for Somali, Mexican, Korean, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, and of course, Pilgrim (our turkey, stuffing, and such) food. This is a free event for everyone, and the Center loves it when members of the Augsburg community can see what happens there.

Cognition and Music Presentation Today at 4 p.m.
On Friday, November 16, at 4 p.m. in OGC 200 the Psychology Department is hosting a presentation by Dr. Michael Schutz who is currently Assistant Professor of Music Cognition/Percussion at McMaster University. His presentation is titled "Music: a multi-sensory experience." A short abstract about his presentation is below.
Why do we buy concert tickets when the same sounds can be heard more cheaply and comfortably within our own homes? Why do popular music concerts include elaborate lighting and staging effects for what is ostensibly an auditory event? Why can't orchestral musicians wear t-shirts and flip-flops? Clearly, both watching musicians play and "moving to the beat" while listening to are common behaviors— but why do these actions play such a crucial role in music "listening"? My talk will explore this issue through the context of two projects exploring the multi-sensory nature of the musical experience. The first is a novel musical illusion in which musicians use visible gestures to change the way music "sounds." Some expert performers capitalize on the fact that although these gestures have no acoustic consequences, they are crucial in shaping the way in which audiences perceive performances. The second is a new line of research exploring how "moving to the beat" can actually help audience's listen more accurately. Together, these projects raise interesting philosophical questions about what music "is" and how it is best experienced.
