Youth-led Community Organizing

YFM205: Youth-led Community Organizing Do you value the voice of youth? Do you believe they have a lot to offer? Would you like to learn how to empower young people to make positive change in their communities? If so, then this class is for you.

In this 0.5 credit course we will study and experience the history, theory, and practice of youth-led community organizing. This course is listed under the Spring semester Religion courses but is not a course about religious youth work. It is open to all students with an interest in working with youth of any background.

It will meet MWF 9:10 a.m. - 10:10 a.m. from January 14-March 1. Contact Professor Jeremy Myers (myers@augsburg.edu) with any questions.

This session is offered in two parts, and will make use of the StrengthsFinder assessment available with the book Strengths Based Leadership. You may attend both parts, or only the one that is most applicable to you - your choice!

Part 1 is intended for first time completers of the StrengthsFinder assessment, and for those who have previously completed the assessment and would like a refresher. Engage with your assessment results and explore ways to apply your strengths at work.

Part 2 is intended for those who have previously attended a Using your Strengths at Work session. Explore the StrengthsFinder concepts in more depth and discuss further application.

CTL has a limited number of copies of Strengths Based Leadership (which includes the StrengthsFinder assessment) available for attendees who have not previously completed the assessment. Gift cards for Kindle editions are also available.

About the Facilitator:
Velma Lashbrook is the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies. She believes that understanding your strengths is essential for understanding how you can best contribute and exercise leadership. She uses strengths based approaches in several of her graduate classes and has led strengths-based workshops for Augsburg, business, and professional audiences.

Ushers Needed for Advent Vespers Services

We're getting closer to the holiday season and you know what that means for Augsburg... Advent Vespers is right around the corner!

It takes many different roles to put on an event as large as our own Advent Vespers. Be a part; take up one of these roles and volunteer to usher for services on Friday November 30, Saturday December 1, or both.

Ushering duties include working the will call table, greeting attendees, collecting tickets and handing out programs at the door, and resetting the sanctuary between services.

Preferably, volunteers are willing to help with two services but if only one service works for you that's just fine! Remember, you don't have to be a student to volunteer-- parents, friends, and family all make great volunteers as well! Food will be provided for volunteers.

Support Thanksgiving and New Food Shelf

As you may have read, Campus Kitchen is looking for food and money to make a few hundred Thanksgiving meals happen. Just last night, we decided that any money donated beyond what we need for the Thanksgiving meals will go to the developing Augsburg College Student Food Shelf (planning to open in January). We really want to reach at least $1,500 of donations to meet the full match provided by Finnegans, so please know your contributions will support both causes. Read on for details on the full event.

Every year, each Campus Kitchen program in the country celebrates Thanksgiving with an event called Turkeypalooza. For the week before Thanksgiving, we like to serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal to our neighbors at the sites where we serve food at each week (Ebenezer, Peace House, Brian Coyle, and Common Bond).

Rather than using the fine surplus food that A'viands generously provides us all year, we count on the Augsburg Community to donate the turkey, potatoes, green beans, and money we need to cook all of this extra food.

This year, we have another reason to celebrate, as Finnegans Beer and Community Fund chose us as one of their Three Small Pints: innovative programs that are focused on food and community. On Give to the Max Day, November 15, Finnegans will match all the money raised online up to $1,500. This is a great day to make a monetary donation for Turkeypalooza as it will be doubled. We are looking for people and teams of people (like specific offices or departments) to donate ingredients and/or cash. Please let our intern us know if you would like to represent your office and commit to gather a certain food item. Or, if a cash donation works better, as a representative you can collect money and donate it online on November 15 so that it is doubled by Finnegans. Email if we can count on you and your office.

We will be collecting the frozen turkeys, bags a potatoes, cash, and anything else at a table in the Christensen Center on Thursday 11/15 and Friday 11/16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you can't deliver your gifts then, let us know and we'll make special arrangements.

Learn About Paid Summer Research - 11/14 or 11/15

URGO will be hosting two information sessions next week about paid summer research opportunities for undergraduate students. Research is not only a great summer job, but it also allows you to explore a topic you are interested in, develop skills in your field, and build a professional relationship with a faculty mentor.

Here on campus, the URGO Summer Research Program provides a 10-week research experience where students are paid to join a faculty member's on-going research/creative line or carry out an individually-designed project. Off campus, many universities host similar research programs that are open to students from around the country. Come learn about these exciting opportunities and how to build a strong application at one of the following information sessions:

Charlene Teters to Present "If Not You, Then Who?!"

Augsburg College is proud to host Charlene Teters on Friday, November 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center on the college campus where she will present "If not you, then who?!" The address of the location is: 22nd and Riverside Aves. S., Minneapolis, MN. The event is FREE and open to everyone!

Charlene Teters, (Spokane), known for her activism and art, is presently a professor at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As a founding Board Member of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and the Media, her activist-career began with a vigorous dispute with the University of Illinois over their use of a stereotyped image of an American Indian for the school's sports mascot. She picketed sports events and launched a national debate about the appropriateness of this practice by sports and media. This history of Teters' work is the subject of a nationally aired award winning documentary "In Whose Honor?" by Jay Rosenstein.

Friday keynote speaker: Waziyatawin is a Dakota writer, teacher, and activist from the Pezihutazizi Otunwe (Yellow Medicine Village) in southwestern Minnesota. She earned her Ph.D. in American history from Cornell University and currently holds the Indigenous Peoples Research Chair in the Indigenous Governance Program at the University of Victoria. She is the author or co/editor of six volumes, including her latest volume, For Indigenous Minds Only: A Decolonization Handbook (SAR Press, 2012)

Saturday keynote speaker: Dr. Rose M. Brewer, is the Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor and former Chairperson of the African American & African Studies Department at The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology from Indiana University, and did post-doctoral studies at the University of Chicago. She has published extensively on intersectionality, race, class, gender, political change, and social movements. Her co-authored book, The Color of Wealth (2006) received the Gustavus-Meyer outstanding book award. Dr. Brewer is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at the University of Minnesota and the recipient of the Josie Johnson Human Rights and Social Justice Award at the University.

Staff Senate Open Forum: Financial Outlook

We noticed there is keen interest in the College's financial outlook and are providing an opportunity for staff to ask questions and engage in the discussion at a Staff Senate Open Forum on Tuesday, November 13, 12:30 p.m. (feel free to bring your lunch) in OGC Room 103.

President Pribbenow and Chief Financial Officer Tammy McGee will be present to answer questions about the financial outlook, short term solutions, budgeting for next year, plans for the longer term, and any other questions you have. Please come and join in the discussion on Tuesday.

Moonlight Madness

Are you on campus Friday night? Are you looking to do something for hundreds of youth in our community? Well Friday night November 9, hundreds of area junior high youth and their church adults will come to Si Melby and Kennedy to enjoy the facilities and to start their all night lock-in. Now this is where we need your help. We need Augsburg Students to help serve food, help get youth to the dome, and to greet the different groups as they come to Augsburg. "Faith and the Imagination: The Call to the Arts"

Jeremiah Gamble does many things. Sometimes, too many things. He's a full-time dad, writer, performer, producer, musician, teacher, and noodler. He co-founded Theater for the Thirsty in 1998 with his wife, Vanessa. Together they portray over 100 different characters in their ten original shows. He teaches playwrighting at Northwestern College, is member of the Dramatist Guild and has produced critically acclaimed works at the Minnesota Fringe Festival. He and Vanessa make their home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with their kids: Phoenicia, Eden and Obadiah. Together they create music, theater, laughter, and some pretty tasty chicken curry.

During this chapel, Jeremiah will be performing an excerpt from his original one man play, The Rough and the Holy. It's an engaging, honest, and emotionally charged production discovering the life of Jesus, "the friend of sinners." Jeremiah's physical style of theater fleshes out real people from the Gospel accounts in a creative, powerful and sometimes humorous way.

With Veteran's Day on a Sunday, we decided to have 2 celebrations which will also serve as an "open house" for the Vets/Military office/lounge in Memorial Hall 207.

Desperately looking for a temporary home for my dog, a 9-year-old Cocker Spaniel. From Mid December till early May.

He is potty trained, very obedient, calm, and the sweetest. Misc., food, and vet expenses will be covered!
