Augsburg Mentee Wins at International Fair

Augsburg summer research mentee Taylor McCanna, a student at Breck High School, won second grand prize in mechanical engineering at the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF).

The ISEF is the largest international science fair with more than 1,500 students grades 9-12 from more than 70 countries (http://www.societyforscience.org/isef/) .

McCanna worked with David Murr, physics professor, to develop a high-altitude ballooning experiment that measures the atmospheric electric field. The goal of the project was to develop a system that could be easily and inexpensively adopted by other high school and undergraduate ballooning teams. This, in turn, would enable "crowd sourced" research on the global atmospheric electric circuit and could possibly lead to unique observations of global climate change.

Murr and Ben Stottrup, associate professor of physics, will host two more Breck students this summer. Augsburg's connection to the science program at Breck School dates back to mid-1980s when now Emeritus Professor Arlin Gyberg helped set up Breck's AP Chemistry program.

For her project, McCanna also was awarded the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair award for Excellence (and selected as one of the top three projects in her division), the American Council of Engineering Companies Grand Award, Minnesota Astronomical Society Award, the US Army Award, the U.S. Air Force Award, and the U.S. Navy Award, the National Society for Professional Engineers Award at the Minnesota state science fair.

She also was a finalist in the Young Naturalist Awards contest, a national competition sponsored by the American Museum of Natural History.
