Life of the Mind – October 22-23, 2011

Faculty and Staff

Next year's Life of the Mind Retreat will be held October 22-23, and focus on Global Poverty and Social Inequity. It will be organized by Katie Welle, Steve Peacock, Sarah Myers, Orv Gingerich, and Kevin Bowman. Please mark your calendar. Reservations will be taken in September.

By David Grant, with Somali and Oromo translation by the Voices of Cedar Riverside Ensemble

Directed by John Bueche, Ensemble Coaching by Maren Ward

Performed by the Voices of Cedar Riverside Ensemble of emerging East African youth and young adult actors: Amal Ali, Sakariya Ali, Samira Ali, Chaltu Berento, Abdi Farah, Fardosa Jama, Shamarke Jama, Ifrah Mansour, Hamdi Mohamed, Shirwa Mohamed, Sara Mohammed Nur, Shemse Nuru, Shaadiah Swenson, Farrington Starnes

Cedar Riverside Community Weekend – Saturday & Sunday, July 23 & 24 – doors at 5:00pm, Program at 6 pm with additional performances of music, comedy and storytelling by East African artists. Tickets are free (bring your ANCR card, or sign up for a new one at the door)

Be a Mentor

+ Get service credits in order to graduate.
+ Invest in the life of a middle school or high school student.
+ Be mentored while mentoring.

The Next Gen Mentoring Program takes place on Wednesday nights during the school year at Church of the Open Door in Maple Grove. Mentors and students participate in both large and small group activities, along with consistent 1-on-1 time every week.

Mentors also have a mentor (called a Mentor Coordinator) who is there to listen and provide support throughout the year. Mentors and mentor coordinators meet once a month.

Sad News About a Student

Nathan Gregory, student, passed away in his sleep on Sunday, July 17, 2011. The cause of death is not known. He was at home with his parents in Tucson, AZ.

Nathan arrived at Augsburg in Spring 2011.

Please keep Nathan and his family in your prayers.

An on-campus service is being planned for early next week.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Gilman Intl Scholarship Winners Issei & Zahra

Congrats to Issei Kashima and Zahra Abdirizak who both were awarded a combined $8000 for study abroad!

Issei will be studying business and liberal arts in Tokyo, Japan during the academic year.

Zahra will be studying Intl Relations and Business in Paris, France during fall semester.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.

Part Time Nanny Needed

We are looking for a caring and responsible individual that can come to our house three, half days a week to care for our two year old son. This person should be creative, energetic and committed with a desire to read books, play with play do, go on nature walks and run in the yard with our little man. Previous experience working with children, good references and good communication skills is necessary.

We are a family of four without pets and live close to Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. Our older child will be at preschool during the day. We enjoy spending time outside, being creative, being active and exploring. Please contact me if this position interests you.

Days and hours: M,T,W from 1pm to 5pm, occasionally extra hours for nights out. Duration: August 29, 2011 through May 2012.
