Norma Noonan Stepping Down as MAL Program Director

Norma Noonan, PhD, is stepping down as director of Augsburg's Master of Arts in Leadership (MAL) Program and the Leadership Center as of June 30. She will continue to teach in the MAL program. Throughout her 18 years of directing and teaching in the MAL program, she has been both a leader and a shaper of leaders.

MAL students, faculty, and alumni gathered on Saturday, June 18 from noon to 2 p.m. in the Christensen Center to celebrate Noonan's ongoing contributions. Paul Pribbenow, Barbara Farley, Velma Lashbrook, Terry Burns, and Patty Park shared memories and tributes on behalf of the college, MAL's faculty, students, and alumni. In return, Noonan gave a warm and entertaining response, including reminiscences of her experiences. An open mic session gave all those present a chance to greet and thank her. Guests also conveyed messages through a videotaping station and a scrapbook project. The event was organized by MAL's Alumni Committee, chaired by Glenda Holste, MAL '05.

Research Participants Needed

This summer Megan Steffl is working on an URGO summer research project that is in need of volunteers. The study is looking at Christian-Muslim relations through the lens of friendship. The only requirements for the study are that one friend is Christian while the other is Muslim, and that you consider yourselves to be "close" friends, close enough where you would be able to talk about your friendship in detail.

Interviews will be taking place in the library study rooms, however if your friend lives far away Skype interviews can be an option. Interviews take between an hour and a half to two hours. There are no direct benefits to this study except the opportunity to help attempt to improve Christian-Muslim relations. For more information please contact Megan directly at steffl@augsburg.edu, or by telephone at 612-330-1224.

Grade Due Dates

Spring Rochester grades are due Friday, 1 Jul.
Spring WEC/Grad grades are due Wednesday, 6 Jul.
SSI grades are due Monday, 11 Jul.

Grading information can be found through the following link:
http://www.augsburg.edu/registrar/gradeentry.html

Timely grade submission is important to our students. Most of our WEC and Grad students are on company reimbursement and work under time lines for submitting their tuition claim (which requires a grade for the course). Many of our Day students are dependent on scholarships which require graded coursework for continuance or for application for new monies. Thank you for your efforts to support our students.

Volunteer with Campus Kitchen this Summer

Campus Kitchen is looking for volunteers to help with cooking classes, delivery shifts, youth cooking/gardening classes, and site monitoring.

COOKING CLASSES
To create the meals we serve Mon-Fri, we will prepare the meals Sun-Thurs evenings, 7-9 pm in the Christensen Center kitchen.
- Each evening Augsburg students will lead a class cooking a different meal (menus will be available online soon)
- Meals will be simple, affordable, use vegetables that are in season, healthy, and if all goes right, delicious
- All the participants will enjoy the meal at the end and can take 1-2 meals home with them along with the recipe

DELIVERY SHIFTS
Thursdays 11-1 pm - Peace House homeless shelter (free lunch)
Thursdays 2-3 pm - Prepare senior meals
Thursdays 3-6 pm - Deliver senior meals door to door
Fridays (1st and 3rd) 5:30-7:30 pm - Banquet at Ebenezer apartment (free dinner)
Sundays (some) 6-9 pm - Secure Waiting homeless shelter

EDUCATION CLASSES
We will be teaching kids cooking and gardening at the Brian Coyle Community Center Mon-Thu 12-4 pm, and we are looking for consistent volunteers (can be created as an education internship) to assist with those. Those helping will enjoy a lunch and snack with the kids.

SITE MONITORING
We are setting up a system for monitoring the eight sites we serve at (we are receiving federal funds that require intense reporting). We are looking for 1-2 students who will be briefly trained as monitors, and can visit these sites to ensure correct reporting, and always enjoy a meal onsite.

To sign up for cooking classes and delivery shifts, go to our calendar at www.tinyurl.com/ckpcalendar.

Event Announcements

Forgive and Forget?

Approximately 20 high school students from around Minnesota will gather at Augsburg College on Sunday June 26th to spend a week studying theology at our annual Augsburg College Youth Theology Institute. This year's theme is “Our Wild and Reckless God: What Does Forgiveness Mean?” Dr. Mark Tranvik, Professor and Chair of Religion at Augsburg College, will guide the students through a theological exploration of forgiveness in class during the week. The students' classroom learning will be enhanced with a variety of community-based learning experiences including a visit to Mt. Zion Temple, the Basilica of St. Mary, Thrivent's religious art gallery, and Campus Kitchen. We also take in a fair share of fun and good food during the week. If you see this group on campus, be sure to ask them what they know about forgiveness.
