Scheduled Power Outage

There will be an electrical power outage on Monday, March 14th from approximately 7:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. to repair the electrical meter for Christensen Center, Old Main, Mortensen Hall and Urness Hall. The emergency generators will be online for Mortensen Hall and Urness Hall during the outage, but Christensen Center and Old Main will have no power during that time. In addition, water service will be interrupted for a period of about 1 hour, starting at approximately 10:00 A.M. Depending on the result of Monday's outage there is a potential for a second required electrical outage that would take place on Thurday March 17th if needed.

Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

The White Privilege Conference (WPC) is an opportunity to examine and explore issues related to white privilege, white supremacy and oppression.

WPC provides a forum for critical discussions about diversity, multicultural education and leadership, social justice, race/racism, sexual orientation, gender relations, religion and other systems of privilege/oppression. This conference is recognized as a challenging, empowering and educational experience. The workshops, keynotes and institutes not only inform participants, but engage and challenge them, while providing practical tips and strategies for combating inequality.

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Student-Faculty Interaction

This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. Zyzzogeton Registration and Information

Please help us in locating students who have done research or creative activity of high quality. Our annual celebration of student scholarship and creative activity, Zyzzogeton (or "Z") sponsored by LSAMP, McNair & URGO*, is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14.

Poster Session: April 13, 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Oral presentations, literary readings, music performances, art showing, etc. April 13-14, 2011

Students can participate in "Z" via:
-The poster session on Wednesday, April 13 (3:00-5:00). URGO/LSAMP/McNair pay for poster printing costs.
-An alternative format for presenting their work. For example, this could be a musical performance, a literary reading, art showing, or an oral presentation.

Fifth Annual ACTC Women's Studies Conference

Please join us on Friday, March 11 from 4-9pm for the Fifth Annual ACTC Women's Studies Conference at Hamline University. All are welcome; registration and dinner are free and open to all. The conference will be held in the Klas Center, which is on the north end of campus, near the track & field. After 3:00 p.m., conference attendees are able to park without a Hamline permit in campus lots. Lot B is the closest to Klas; if that is full, try Lot E on the east side of campus, near the tennis courts.

Call for Proposals – International Travel Grants

Applications Due March 30

Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.

Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:
International professional travel – Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.
The Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Application Process
Submit proposals for international conference travel using the online Faculty and Staff Professional Travel application on the CTL website. Applications for international conference travel are due March 30, 2011 for travel in 2011-12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012); these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Submit proposals for the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant using the online Group and Individual Project form on the CTL website. Applications are due March 30, 2011 for travel during Summer 2011; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Call for Proposals – Summer Scholarship Grants

Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.

Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Call for Proposals – Instructional & Course Design

Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of CTL's Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.

Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.

Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.

Pathways to Careers in the BioSciences

Pathways to Careers in the BioSciences is scheduled for Thursday, April 5th from 3:30-7:00 p.m. at the U of MN Continuing Education & Conference Center in St. Paul. Cost $10 YOU must register by March 28th in the Strommen Career and Internship Center. This event is sponsored by the MN Private Colleges Career Consortium.

The purpose of the event is to give students (first years through seniors) the opportunity to meet with and get information from alums of our colleges working in science-related careers!

First-year and senior students recently received e-mail invitations to take part in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE--pronounced "Nessie") If you got the survey, please fill it out! This is a great opportunity to give us your input and influence change. Over 1000 four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada use NSSE to better understand and evaluate student-faculty interactions, campus environment, and a range of educational experiences. March YFM Round Table - Big Heads and Chancel Drama

Tues. March 8th 4:45 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Century Room (dinner provided)

Dean J. Seal, adjunct at Augsburg and former producer of the MN Fringe Festival, will show you how he has written Christmas and Easter plays for congregational use. He will bring very big heads made of cardboard and paper mache to show how much can be done for pennies. He will also discuss the theology of theater in a church setting- immersion in the text, intergenerational activity, and service to the community (that last bit from Dr. King).

Auggie Danielle Goodwin, along with college students from various institutions,has concluded her 5 weeks of one-on-one Spanish courses in Guatemala and is now in El Salvador, ready to learn about social justice movements!

Ward to Compete at NCAA championships

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College sprinter Nick Ward (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) has qualified for his first NCAA Division III national meet, as he will compete in the men's 55-meter dash at the indoor track and field national championships in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend.

With a school-record 6.42-second effort to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in the event for the third year in a row on Friday, Ward set an NCAA championships provisional qualifying time, and his time was confirmed for entry into the championships on Monday morning.

The NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships will be held this Friday and Saturday (3/11-12) at the Capital University Fieldhouse in Columbus, Ohio. The men's 55-meter dash preliminaries will be on Friday at 7:20 p.m. (Eastern time), with the finals set for Saturday at 6:05 p.m. (Eastern time).

Ward's 6.42-second time stands tied as the eighth-fastest among the 16 entrants in the event.

One of the top sprinters in school history, Ward earned conference titles in both the men's 55 and long jump at the MIAC indoor meet over the weekend, winning the 55 for the third year in a row and the long jump for the second straight year. He also placed third in the men's 200-meter dash and was part of a fourth-place 800-meter relay squad. In his career, Ward has earned six MIAC titles, 11 All-MIAC honors and seven All-MIAC honorable-mention honors.

Levine, Thompson Earn MIAC honors

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College's Serenae Levine (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honorable mention honors, while Lexi Thompson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, it was announced today by the conference office.

As a guard, Levine led the Auggies in scoring (10.4 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg), assists (4.2 apg) and minutes played (29.5 mpg). She finished the season ranked in the top-25 in the MIAC in scoring, seventh in rebounding and second in assists. In her career, she has played 70 games, averaging 10.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assist per-game. Levine currently sits third in school history in career assists (278).

Thompson was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, a part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the court. Thompson played in all 25 games for the Auggies, averaging 5.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and team-leading 53 steals. In her career, she has played in 75 games, averaging 5.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per-game. Thompson currently sits 14th all-time on the schools career steals list (138).

In its seventh season under head coach Jennifer Britz, Augsburg finished 5-20 overall and 4-18 in MIAC play.
