Call for Proposals – International Travel Grants

Applications Due March 30

Purpose
The purpose of travel grants is to support faculty involvement in professional associations and to support collaboration with our international programs and partners. The expectation is that faculty will share their scholarship activities, remain current on the scholarship work in their professions, and develop relationships with others in their profession and in the Augsburg international network.

Description and Eligibility
In addition to the standard professional travel grants, there are two competitive awards for international travel:

International professional travel – Two grants of up to $2000 are awarded to full-time faculty for international travel to present at a professional conference.

The Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant - Two grants of up to $2500 are awarded to faculty or staff for international travel to support teaching, scholarship, or service collaboration with Augsburg International Programs or Partner Institutions that facilitates internationalizing the Augsburg campus and curriculum.

Application Process
Submit proposals for international conference travel using the online Faculty and Staff Professional Travel application on the CTL website. Applications for international conference travel are due March 30, 2011 for travel in 2011-12 (June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012); these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Submit proposals for the Dean's Internationalization Summer Travel Grant using the online Group and Individual Project form on the CTL website. Applications are due March 30, 2011 for travel during Summer 2011; these are reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee in early April.

Call for Proposals – Instructional & Course Design

Instructional and Course Design Grants
Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of CTL's Instructional and Course Design (ICD) Grant is to support the design or redesign of courses in undergraduate or graduate programs, and to enhance the instructional design capabilities of Augsburg faculty. The expectation is that the grant will make it possible for faculty to devote the time necessary (at least a full-month equivalent) to create a meaningful design or redesign of an Augsburg course.

Description and Eligibility
Six $4000 grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to projects which will impact a significant number of students or are central to the effectiveness of a program, and to faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years. Faculty who receive this grant are not permitted to teach more than one course during the summer.

Grant recipients are expected to complete readings related to designing significant learning experiences in face-to-face and online contexts, participate in a one-day orientation and training session and on the Moodle resource site, meet with a consultant at least twice over the summer, and share their syllabi at the end of the summer and their assessment and reflection on the course after it is implemented. Tim Pippert and Cari Maguire will serve as ICD consultants for 2011-2012.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu), including: the course number and title, a profile of the students expected to take the course, a rationale for the course design/redesign and for the development of your design skills, project objectives, and a timetable and plan for completion. Grant recipients are expected to submit the syllabus for the new or revised course by September 1, 2011 and a short final report, including an assessment and reflection on the course implementation by May 15, 2012.

Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

The workshops currently scheduled for Spring and Summer 2011 are:

Call for Proposals – Summer Scholarship Grants

Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and

Summer 2011
Applications Due March 14

Purpose
The purpose of the Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants and the Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility
Two $4,000 Dean's Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty who are in at least the second year of their contract are eligible to apply. Faculty who receive a Dean's Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Two $2,000 Grangaard Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2011. All full-time faculty are eligible to apply; priority is given to tenure-track faculty who have not received this grant in the previous three years.

Application Process
Please submit a one-to-two-page description of the project, including a summary of work already accomplished and a timetable and plan for completion. Explain how receipt of the Summer Scholarship Grant will accelerate project completion. Please attach a curriculum vitae along with any directly relevant supporting materials. Grant recipients submit a progress report in fall 2011 and a short final report by Feb. 1, 2012.

Submit applications as email attachments no later than March 14, 2011 to Sarah Hedstrom (hedstrom@augsburg.edu)in the Center for Teaching and Learning. Applications will be reviewed by the full Faculty Development Committee, and awards will be announced in early April.

Our annual celebration of student scholarship and creative activity, Zyzzogeton (or "Z"), is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 14.

Students can participate in "Z" via:

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email lashbroo@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Academic Advising AQIP Project

A message from Sheila Anderson...

Thank you for including the AQIP project on campus-wide academic advising practices and processes on the Feb. 9th faculty meeting agenda and for listening to our plans for carrying out this study. While carrying out the project itself is somewhat nerve racking, we're really looking forward to hearing from students, faculty, and staff about their experience with the advising process and how all the pieces fit together. This feedback will help us determine areas where we really shine and where our changing student population needs additional support. I hope you know how much we value your ideas, insight, and suggestions in Academic Advising. Likewise, your input is vital to this project as a whole.

As I said at the faculty meeting, we want to gather you perceptions, ideas and suggestions. As a first step in the information gathering process, I hope you'll take some time to provide feedback on the following questions.

• If you have a faculty advising load, how is it working for you?
Considerations: Is the process of assigning advisors working? Are you able to "off-load" advisees when they're not in your major area of study? Are there other advising models that you'd like to consider? How can we best articulate the purpose and expectations of faculty-student advising and foster this advising relationship?

• How can we best support you and your students when they are working through challenging process or academic issues?
Considerations: Do you feel you have sufficient information and/or knowledge of resources, policies, and procedures to answer questions? Are there tools formats that would simplify the process? Is the Academic Alert system meeting your needs? What are your suggestions for making it better? (note: we're in the process of improving the academic alert system for 2011. This would be an appropriate place to include your wish list.)

• What is your vision of the faculty-student advising relationship and how can staff advisors from around campus support this?

Thanks in advance for your thoughtful consideration of these questions. I look forward to receiving your feedback. As mentioned in the faculty meeting, we will gather information during spring term and provide a draft during fall term.

Carrie Carroll, AVP for Admissions and 13-year employee of the college, will be leaving Augsburg for a new job later this month. She has accepted a position at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where she will serve as Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families

Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with students ar Fridley Middle School who are involved with Public Achievement, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create tie blankets. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric stores. The blankets will be made by the students and then donated to homeless families in the area. Now until February 26, 2011 donations can be dropped off in Sverdup Hall's lower level education department office suite. Thanks!

Event Announcements

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, March 2

The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.

This fourth session in the series will take place on Wednesday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on disability/nondisability, ableism, and ways to combat ableism in everday life.

So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways, then come join us!

Focus the Nation TODAY

Focus the Nation is a clean energy workshop and panel held to educate students, staff and faculty about local and national energy issues. Augsburg's event will involve four workshops to show the community how they can get involved with clean energy initiatives even on a small scale.

Eat Well, Live Well - A Story of Hope TONIGHT

Have you ever had a friend or family member that may have experienced an eating disorder? Have you ever worried or wondered about a friend or family member that seems to have some disordered eating? Did you wish you knew how to be supportive or say the right thing?

CCHP invites all interested students, faculty and staff to our Love Every Body Week panel discussion tonight featuring a woman who has not only experienced an eating disorder but has recovered from it. Rhonda Guertin will tell her story of hope. Also on the panel with be registered dietician Kay Guidarelli, a consultant to many colleges who works with students on nutrition and CCHP counselor Jon Vaughan-Fier who will talk about mindful eating and an opportunity to learn more about the practical application of mindfulness at an event next week.

The program will be in the Marshall Room from 6:30 - 8 pm Light refreshments will be served. Any questions, please call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707. Hope to see you tonight.

Any student, staff, faculty, or community member may nominate a fellow student leader, student group, or student group advisor for these awards; self-nominations are also accepted. Swenson, Good to Receive Hall of Fame Honors

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College alumni Jeff Swenson '79 and Mike Good '71 will be honored for their lifetime contributions to wrestling with honors from the Minnesota Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in April.

Swenson, who served as the Auggies' head coach for 25 seasons (1980-84, 1986-2007) and is currently Augsburg's Athletic Director, will be one of five recipients of the chapter's Lifetime Service Award. Good, a two-time All-American who served as Augsburg's head coach in the 1971-72 season and now serves as chairman of the Augsburg Board of Regents, will receive the chapter's Outstanding American Award.

Jeff Swenson
Swenson has spent nearly his entire adult life as a member of the Augsburg athletic community, first as a three-time All-American wrestler, then as one of the most decorated coaches in NCAA wrestling history, and now as leader of Augsburg's 20-sport intercollegiate athletics program.

As a wrestler at Augsburg from 1975-79, Swenson produced a 102-17 competitive record, earning NAIA All-American honors three times (1977-78-79) and winning the national title at 167 pounds in 1979. He earned the school's senior Honor Athlete award in 1979 and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Under Swenson's leadership as head coach, Augsburg won 10 NCAA Division III wrestling national titles in a 17-year span. Augsburg also finished second in Division III national competition seven times under Swenson, and finished among the top four teams in national competition 19 seasons in a row. Swenson coached 158 individual All-Americans and 39 individual national champions.

In the classroom during Swenson's tenure, Augsburg produced 98 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans, the most of any college in any division in the nation, and eight College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-Americans in wrestling. Over the 10 seasons the NWCA has awarded Division III academic team national championships while Swenson was head coach, Augsburg finished second three times and first once (1998-99).

Swenson, whose teams also won 20 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference team titles, was named MIAC Coach of the Year 13 times and NWCA National Coach of the Year six times (1983, 1991, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2007). Swenson was inducted into the NCAA Division III Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2005, the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association/David Bartelma Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2000-01, Swenson was named Lutheran College National Coach of the Year (all sports) from Lutheran Brotherhood, and in 2002, he earned National College Coach of the Year honors (all divisions) from Wrestling USA Magazine.

As an administrator, Swenson has led the Augsburg program since 2001, through a period of unprecedented growth and improvement. In 2007, construction was completed on the new Kennedy Center addition to Si Melby Hall, which includes expanded classroom, meeting and locker room space, along with a new fitness facility and a new wrestling training facility. In 2005, a new SprinTurf surface was installed at Edor Nelson Field, and a new seasonal air-supported dome was installed over the field in the 2006-07 school year.

Mike Good
A three-time MIAC wrestling champion, two-time NAIA All-American and a state high school titleist in his hometown of Fridley, Minn., Good will be honored with the "Outstanding American" award by the Minnesota Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. According to the Hall of Fame, the Outstanding American award "demonstrates wrestling's pride in those who have used the disciplines of the sport to launch notable careers in other walks of life, such as science and technology, business and industry, government and the military, and the arts and humanities."

Good won MIAC titles in 1968 and 1969 at 130 pounds, while winning the 134-pound conference crown in 1970. In 1969, he earned NAIA national runner-up honors at 130 pounds, and in 1971, he finished fourth nationally at 134 to become the first Auggie wrestler to ever earn two All-American honors. A two-time team captain, Good was named Augsburg's Senior Honor Athlete in 1971, and was inducted into the Augsburg Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

After graduating from Augsburg with a major in sociology and minor in physical education in 1971, Good served as Augsburg's head coach in the 1971-72 season, finishing with a 14-0-1 dual-meet record, a second-place MIAC team finish and a 10th-place NAIA team national finish with two All-Americans.

Good served as a high school teacher and wrestling coach for five years at Blaine (Minn.) High School, before moving into the real estate industry, where he has worked for more than three decades.

He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Southeby's International Realty Affiliates LLC, a premier provider of luxury residential real estate services. Prior to joining Southeby's in 2004, he served for seven years as executive vice president and chief operating officer of NRT Incorporated, the largest residential real estate brokerage firm in the United States.

In 2001, Good was named to the Augsburg College Board of Regents, and was elected as the board's chairman in May 2008.

The Diamonds and Pearls Project

A few of girls from Augsburg are teaming up with The Diamonds and Pearls Project; a nonprofit organization that collect new or slightly used formal dresses and accessories for high school girls who cannot afford a prom dress on their own. We will be taking donations, dresses and accessories on March 2nd, 3rd, 9th, and 10th in the Christensen lobby. So clean out your closets and donate your new or gently worn prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, formal dresses, and accessories that could include but not limited to: purses, costume jewelry, tiaras, shawls and scarves. Also, don't be afraid to pass this information on to friends and family! Your help is greatly appreciated!!
