1. As a Pell Grant recipient you may be eligible to apply for a Gilman Scholarship to Study Abroad.

The Gilman International Scholarship offers up to $8,000 additional funding for semester and summer* study abroad to students who have a Pell grant as part of their financial aid.

*Summer Scholarships now available for all majors. Programs must be 4 weeks or more in length and meet destination requirements.

Designing and Assessing Written Assignments

The spring sessions of our Foundational Series on Student Learning addresses how to construct and assess written and group assignments, and how to integrate online technologies into courses. These workshops are intended to provide tools to help improve student learning.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Staff Development Series begins February 15

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

The workshops currently scheduled for Spring and Summer 2011 are:

Social Entrepreneurship Survey

Dear Current Augsburg College Student:

We are MBA students working on our MBA Capstone Project (MBA 580) with Dr. Bruce Batten (Associate Director of MBA Program).

Augsburg is considering developing a new multidisciplinary program offering in Social Enterprise/Social Entrepreneurship. As part of a feasibility study we are conducting a survey to gauge your interest in socially oriented businesses and careers. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and/or persuading entire societies to take new leaps.

Study Abroad Writing Contest--Cash Prizes

Here's a good opportunity for students to share their experience abroad and possibly win some cash....

For over 20 years, Transitions Abroad has been hosting an annual student writing contest for all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, students who have graduated within the past year, and students currently on leave from school.

For this year's contest, the winning student submission will be awarded $500 in cash, the second place winner will be awarded $150, and the third place winner $100. In addition, the winners will be featured in the April Webzine dedicated to study abroad and educational travel.

All winning pieces will be published on the TransitionsAbroad.com website. Runner-up winners will be awarded $50 and will also be published on TransitionsAbroad.com.

The contest deadline is March 8, 2011 with no entry fee. Winners will be chosen on or about March 15th, 2011. Winners will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by April 1, 2011 for publication by May 1, 2011 or at such time as all winners have received and cashed payment.

Submissions that have been published at home institutions during the current academic year also qualify.

Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Nominations

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

The Oren Gateway Center is Augsburg's newest residential facility and is a substance free environment. Be a Residential Peer Mentor for TRiO/SSS Students

Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.

Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor’s degree.

RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role model–authoritative without being authoritarian.

There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus.

Auggies vs. Tommies Fac/Staff Fitness Challenge

Come one, come all and join the 2nd Annual Auggies vs. Tommies Fitness Challenge. Open to all faculty and staff (full-time, part-time, adjunct).
Last year the Auggies were victorious!

Begins Wed., Feb. 16, weeks are Wed. through Tues., competition lasts 9 weeks, weekly winner announced, report points via email to enke@augsburg.edu by 1 p.m. on Wed. Team with the highest point total wins that week. Team that wins the most weeks wins the challenge.

Points are accrued by working out (shoveling snow counts). 30 minutes = 1 pt., 60 minutes = 2 pts. Max. of 2 points/day, 14 pts./week. Every point matters whether it is 1 or 14. Nobody sees your points except me.

Goliard Meeting - Mardi Gras

The Goliard Society of Medievalists will be meeting this Sunday Feb. 13th at 5:30 PM in Lindell 301 to plan the entertainment for this year's Mardi Gras Madrigals - the annual medieval feast that the Goliards put on. This feast has much singing, dancing, joking, and of course - medieval costumes! Many Augsburg students perform poetry, song, dances, jokes or sketches at the feast. If you would like to be involved with the entertainment at Madrigals or just involved with the feast in any way, please come to this meeting! Free pizza will be provided!

Emmy Winning Filmmaker Michael King Feb. 15

All students and faculty are invited to hear Emmy Award-winning writer/film director/producer Michael King on Tuesday, February 15, 2011. He will speak at chapel, followed by a screening of one of his documentary films--Rapping With Shakespeare.

--At the morning chapel service on Tuesday, February 15 at 11:20 am. Always focused on the making of socially conscious films, King will discuss what informs and directs his art.
--From 11:50-1:30, King will provide a screening of Rapping With Shakespeare in Sateren Auditorium.
--After the screening there will be a Q/A session with students.
--At 3:10, he will explore the role of music in film while working with the Augsburg Jazz Ensemble in the Band Room.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend Chapel and the screening of Rapping With Shakespeare.

Through the on line registration you may sign up for bus transportation from Minneapolis and Rochester to Luther College, admission to all sessions, meals, and lodging.
The bus will load at Augsburg (Minneapolis)1:45 pm and at Augsburg (Rochester) at 3:30 pm on Friday and return at approximately 6 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturday. Day students will be housed with Luther College students in residence halls. WEC and grad students have the option of staying with Luther students in a residence hall or staying in a motel at their own expense. Faculty and staff will stay in a motel at their own expense. New Student-Run Mental Health Awareness Group

Active Minds is an award-winning, national student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group. Students who participate in Active Minds work to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses by promoting open, enlightened discussion, increasing student awareness of mental health issues, and providing information and resources. Active Minds has 300+ chapters on college campuses nationwide.

Students are invited to come to an interest meeting sponsored by the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion to learn how to start a chapter on our campus. On Wednesday, February 16th, from 6-7pm at the CCHP House (corner of 7th Street and 21st Avenue), counselors from CCHP will provide information about starting a student-run Active Minds chapter at Augsburg. There is no obligation to join. Come for the free pizza and learn more about Active Minds. Get involved in the conversation!

Native American Film Series

First Circle:
For any parent, the thought of having a child taken away is a horrific notion. Yet all across America, children whose families can no longer provide proper support are being put into foster care. Heather Rae brings to the screen her own story of a family affected by foster care due to drug and alcohol addiction in the deeply touching and extremely personal Family: The First Circle. With her nephew having spent time in the foster care system, her brother in prison and her sister-in-law recovering from drug rehabilitation, Rae looks not just at her own family, but at others whose children are similarly effected. She follows the police, who see firsthand the terrible conditions in which some children live, and those who volunteer to foster the children in hopes of providing a better life for them. Incredibly poignant and touching, Family: The First Circle, shows a small slice of the life that effects nearly 300,000 children a year, making this a film that demands to be seen. (Jacob Brades)

Randy Redroad, producer, cinematographer and editor of First Circle, wrote and directed "The Doe Boy," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, winning the NHK Award. Redroad also directed "Haircuts Hurt," "High Horse" and "133 Skyway.

Telphia Named MIAC Athlete of Week

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College sprinter Shanek Telphia (SO, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS) was named Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday.

At Saturday's Bethel Invitational, Telphia claimed event wins in the 55- and 200-meter dashes, with a 26.31-second effort in the 200 and a 7.56-second effort in the 55. She also placed second in the long jump with a personal-best 4.97-meter (16-feet-3.75) effort. The two sprint performances were season-bests for Telphia.

Telphia's 200-meter time is currently tops among MIAC women's competitors, according to the Raceberryjam.com website. She also ranks second in the conference in the 400-meter dash (1:00.39), third in the 55-meter dash and eighth in the long jump. Her 55-meter time is just .26 of a second away from the NCAA's national championship provisional qualifying time of 7.30 seconds.

It's the second time Telphia has earned the MIAC weekly honor in her career, and also the second time an Augsburg women's track and field athlete has earned Track Athlete of the Week honors so far this season; hurdler Caroline Senungi (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) earned the honor on Jan. 24.

Augsburg returns to action this Saturday (2/12) at 12 p.m. at the Carleton Meet of the Hearts in Northfield, Minn.

Hong, Gobana Earn Academic Honor

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College men's soccer players Van Hong (SR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) and Ahmed Gobana (JR, Burnsville, Minn.) were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-North/Central Region College Division squads, it was announced recently.

It's the second consecutive NSCAA academic honor for Hong, after earning third-team honors last season. Hong is a biology/pre-medicine major with a 3.47 grade-point average. It's the first NSCAA academic honor for Gobana, an accounting/finance major with a 3.31 GPA.

Hong was a solid midfielder throughout his Auggie career. In 21 games (17 starts) in 2010, Hong recorded two goals and an assist for five points, including the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Bethel on Oct. 13. Hong, who played three seasons at Augsburg after his playing his initial college season at Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee, played in 56 games (45 starts) in his Auggie career, with four goals and four assists for 12 points.

Gobana shined as a starter at forward this season, with three goals and a team-high-tying six assists in 22 games (20 starts), ranking him seventh in the MIAC's overall statistics in that category. In his two seasons as an Auggie (36 games, 30 starts), Gobana has eight goals and six assists for 22 points, including two game-winning goals.

Under seventh-year head coach Greg Holker, Augsburg finished the 2010 season with one of the best records in school history, finishing with a school-record 16 victories (16-5-1) and the MIAC's postseason playoff championship. Augsburg qualified for the NCAA Division III national playoffs for the second time in the last three years, and finished with a double-digit win record for the fourth time in the last five years.

As a team, Augsburg earned NSCAA Team Academic Award honors for the fifth straight year, with a 3.23 team GPA in 2010.
