The spring sessions of our Foundational Series on Student Learning addresses how to construct and assess written and group assignments, and how to integrate online technologies into courses. These workshops are intended to provide tools to help improve student learning. The spring sessions include:

Distinguished Contributions Awards

The Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the College and the Center for Teaching and Learning invite your nominations for the 2011 awards for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Learning. Augsburg annually recognizes individuals or groups that have made exemplary contributions to creating an engaging academic learning environment through teaching, scholarship, and mentoring and advising.

Call for Nominations. To submit a nomination, please send an email to Judi Green (greenj@augsburg.edu) and include the following information:
* The nominee's name (must be a full-time faculty or staff member at Augsburg College)
* A brief rationale for nominating this individual
* The names and contact information of at least three people who can provide additional information about the nominee's specific contributions (this may include faculty, staff, leaders, students, or alumni that have specific knowledge about the contribution)

Selection Committee. This year's selection committee consists of Barbara Farley, Velma Lashbrook, Lee Clarke, Martha Johnson, Lori Peterson, Dixie Shafer, and Ben Stottrup. This is a juried process. The committee will identify finalists and then gather and review additional information before selecting award recipients.

The awards will be announced at the Honors Convocation on April 15, 2011 and at the Faculty Recognition Luncheon on May 5. The recipient of the award for excellence in teaching will be invited to give the keynote address at the Opening Convocation in September.

Malidoma Patrice Some Convo this Weekend

All students faculty and staff are encouraged and invited to attend the CCHP convocation with Malidoma Patrice Some on Friday 2/11 from 3:30 - 5 pm and/or Saturday 2/12 from noon - 1 pm in the Chapel.

Malidoma means "be friends with strangers." Dr. Some travels throughout the country bringing his message of hope, healing and reconciliation. He is the author of several books which will be available for purchase and signing. He will sign books Friday at 5 pm and Saturday at 11:30 am.

Speaking of Scholarship Series

The Speaking of Scholarship Series features the scholarship of Augsburg faculty and students, through 20-30 minute presentations followed by informal conversations about the issues raised by their work. The intent is to increase awareness of scholarship on campus and learn from each other's experiences. Light hors d'oeuvres are served.

Tutors Needed

We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

Comments from last year's attendees:

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Staff Development Series

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

Social Entrepreneurship Survey

Dear Current Augsburg College Student:

We are MBA students working on our MBA Capstone Project (MBA 580) with Dr. Bruce Batten (Associate Director of MBA Program).

Augsburg is considering developing a new multidisciplinary program offering in Social Enterprise/Social Entrepreneurship. As part of a feasibility study we are conducting a survey to gauge your interest in socially oriented businesses and careers. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society's most pressing social problems. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and/or persuading entire societies to take new leaps.

Be a Residential Peer Mentor for TRiO/SSS Students

Do you want to have fun and make a difference for new first-year students this summer? Augsburg TRiO/Student Support Services (TRiO/SSS) is now accepting applications for the position of Summer Bridge 2011 Residential Peer Mentor (RPM).

TRiO/SSS Summer Bridge selects 25 first-year TRiO students to get a head start on their Augsburg education. During this five-week residential program, students take two college courses for credit, and attend academic support seminars, workshops, and other activities to help provide for a smooth transition to Augsburg in the fall. Summer Bridge participants also participate in TRiO/SSS for the rest of their enrollment at Augsburg.

Augsburg TRiO/SSS started in 2001 and is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and Augsburg College. TRiO/SSS annually provides individual and group services to 160 students so that they develop the skills and motivation necessary to achieve a bachelor's degree.

RPMs will support the efforts of the TRiO/SSS program to provide a quality summer residential and academic experience for program participants that meet the goals established in the TRiO/SSS federal grant. The role in the residence hall is to facilitate and introduce incoming TRiO/SSS students to a healthy living experience. The RPM is not a 24-hour police officer, but a 24-hour role model–authoritative without being authoritarian.

There are four openings (2 male, 2 female) for this live-in position. This position may be considered an internship for transcript notation or academic credit. The RPM position is full-time, with variable hours from July 10 - August 11, 2011, and with additional training dates in May or June, and July.

The Oren Gateway Center is Augsburg's newest residential facility and is a substance free environment. Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Nominations

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Study Abroad Writing Contest

Here's a good opportunity for students to share their experience abroad and possibly win some cash....

For over 20 years, Transitions Abroad has been hosting an annual student writing contest for all currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, students who have graduated within the past year, and students currently on leave from school.

For this year's contest, the winning student submission will be awarded $500 in cash, the second place winner will be awarded $150, and the third place winner $100. In addition, the winners will be featured in the April Webzine dedicated to study abroad and educational travel.

All winning pieces will be published on the TransitionsAbroad.com website. Runner-up winners will be awarded $50 and will also be published on TransitionsAbroad.com.

The contest deadline is March 8, 2011 with no entry fee. Winners will be chosen on or about March 15th, 2011. Winners will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by April 1, 2011 for publication by May 1, 2011 or at such time as all winners have received and cashed payment.

Submissions that have been published at home institutions during the current academic year also qualify.

Active Minds Info Meeting - Note New Location

Active Minds is an award-winning, national student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group. Students who participate in Active Minds work to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses by promoting open, enlightened discussion, increasing student awareness of mental health issues, and providing information and resources. Active Minds has 300+ chapters on college campuses nationwide.

Students are invited to come to an interest meeting sponsored by the Center for Counseling & Health Promotion to learn how to start a chapter on our campus. On Wednesday, February 16th, from 6-7pm in OGC 103, counselors from CCHP will provide information about starting a student-run Active Minds chapter at Augsburg. There is no obligation to join. Come for the free pizza and learn more about Active Minds. Get involved in the conversation!

Buddhism on Sunday Night, Meditations Monday

The Diamond Way Buddhist Center of Minneapoils's Augsburg College group offers teachings on meditation every week, and will be hosting a special event this Sunday.

This Sunday the 13th at 8 pm in Oren Gateway Center Room 100, Eric Gibson, will give a hour long presentation. This includes a lecture, questions and answers, and will end with a short meditation. Eric has been a student of Lama Ole Nydahl for twelve years, and has been teaching at centers across the world for much of that time.

You can join the group every single Monday from 10:20-10:50 in Si-Melby Room 206 (across the hall from the gym). Rotating members of the group take turns teaching for 10 minutes, then lead a 10-15 guided meditation. The events are always designed for beginners.

Our guest will be Sandra Haff, Director of I Love a Parade, a nonprofit organization employing women who are chronically homeless to create high-quality art from recycled costume materials donated by local theaters and parades. http://www.iloveaparade.org/aboutus.html

Haff has more than 20 years experience working with people who are homeless and decades of involvement in various arts activities. She worked at St. Stephen's Shelter and the Wesley Meals Program for several years and also founded Glenda Ministry. Her goal is to serve and support the whole person who is homeless by spending the time necessary to develop a person friendship with him or her.

Spring Blood Drive Coming

Memorial Blood Center and CCHP invite all interested students, faculty and staff to "do the right thing" and donate blood at our annual spring blood drive. The blood drive will take place on Wednesday 2/23/11 from 10 - 3 pm in the East Commons.

Project: Think About It

The Art Club invites the Augsburg community to participate in a collaborative art piece, Project: Think About It. Stop by the Christensen Center Art Gallery and share your reflections about the current topic. Write, draw or doodle your thoughts on a piece of colored paper provided and place it in the box at the gallery counter!

Responses will be folded into shapes and displayed. A selection of responses will be posted on the art galleries' website!

Augsburg Pink Zone

This coming weekend, the Augsburg Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in conjunction with the Athletic Department will be hosting its winter Pink Zone Weekend. This event helps raise money and awareness to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The weekend includes four different sporting events where fans are encouraged to come wearing pink.

The women's hockey team kicks off the weekend off with a home game against St. Olaf on Friday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting a double header against Bethel starting at 1 p.m., followed by a men's hockey game at 7 p.m.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be selling breast cancer awareness t-shirts in the Christensen center on Thursday and Friday ($5) -- all proceeds will go to support the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Whole Leaders See Things Whole, Tom Morgan, Feb 17

Augsburg's Center for Leadership Studies invites you to attend a workshop entitled "Whole Leaders See Things Whole," presented by Tom Morgan.

Date: Thursday, February 17
Time: 5:30 p.m. social time with refreshments; 6:00 p.m. presentation
Location: Oren Gateway Center, Room 100

Morgan will introduce a framework for thinking about our lives as a set of relationships among three dimensions—identity, purpose, and stewardship—each with its own needs, desires, and preoccupations. While these dimensions can pull us in different directions, when we are at our best, they offer us complementary perspectives that allow us to see things whole.

In this workshop, you will complete the Seeing Things Whole Profile, a 39-question survey designed to take a multi-dimensional snapshot of your life and well-being. The profile helps you explore your strengths within the three dimensions and can give you perspective around challenges you face.

You will also receive a workbook, WholeLife Aspirations and Goals, to help examine how your life purpose connects to your life choices. The workbook offers a powerful exercise for clarifying what is important to you and what you plan to do to make your dreams a reality.

Morgan is the executive director of the Augsburg Center for Faith and Learning and professor of business at Augsburg College. He has served as a member of the steering committee for the Faith in the City Collaborative since its inception and serves on the boards of the Augsburg-Fairview Academy, Seeing Things Whole, and Select Learning Resources.

Hear Director/Filmmaker Michael King on 2/15

All students and faculty are invited to hear Emmy Award-winning writer/film director/producer Michael King on Tuesday, February 15, 2011. He will speak at chapel, followed by a screening of one of his documentary films--Rapping With Shakespeare.

--At the morning chapel service on Tuesday, February 15 at 11:20 am. Always focused on the making of socially conscious films, King will discuss what informs and directs his art.
--From 11:50-1:30, King will provide a screening of Rapping With Shakespeare in Sateren Auditorium.
--After the screening there will be a Q/A session with students.
--At 3:10, he will explore the role of music in film while working with the Augsburg Jazz Ensemble in the Band Room.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend Chapel and the screening of Rapping With Shakespeare.

Keeping Track of Auggies

Sendoff for Carrie Carroll

Carrie Carroll, AVP for Admissions and 13-year employee of the college, will be leaving Augsburg for a new job later this month. She has accepted a position at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, where she will serve as Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. The college community is invited to a farewell reception for Carrie on Monday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.
