Scholarly Writing Retreat

Dunrovin Retreat Center, May 16-18, 2011

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites faculty to participate in the second annual Scholarly Writing Retreat at Dunrovin. The retreat gives scholars time and space to work on scholarship, undistracted by meetings, classes, or even children and family responsibilities. Last year, many participants came specifically to plan an approach to a new project; it was an opportunity to focus new ideas so that participants could spend the summer further developing these projects. And for some, it was a chance to finish articles that they had been working on during the year; one person, for example, used the time to complete a piece for publication.

"I can honestly say that I was able to get more quality writing done in the 48 hrs. we were there than any time since my sabbatical."
"The group that went to Dunrovin was wonderfully supportive of each other, and the environment seemed to make everyone's work productive."

The retreat will take place Monday, May 16 at 10 am through Wednesday, May 18 at 3pm. There are 15 openings. First come, first served - those who attended last year are welcome to sign up again. There will be no charge for participants. Please email hedstrom@augsburg.edu to sign up.

Speaking of Scholarship Series

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - THURSDAY

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Catherine Kirkpatrick will present: "Not Just Glue: Roles of Proteoglycans in Development and Disease"

Cells in a multicellular organism are connected with each other through the medium of the extracellular matrix. This external environment, synthesized by the cells themselves, typically provides structural support for cells and tissues, while allowing neighboring cells to communicate with one another. In animals, one abundant component of the extracellular matrix is a class of carbohydrate-modified cell surface proteins called heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs). HSPGs interact with many other extracellular and cell surface proteins such as growth factors and signaling receptors, and thereby regulate cell-cell communication. Studying HSPGs in mammals is complex, but research using model organisms like the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has helped to reveal how these molecules function. I will describe some of my research on the roles of Drosophila proteoglycans in cellular signaling during development, and how disruptions in proteoglycan function can lead to disease in mammals.

Staff Development Series begins February 15

Creating a Culture of Innovation and Excellence
Developing Your Strengths

This spring, CTL is launching the first of three parts of a development series designed for academic and administrative staff. The first set of workshops will deal with different aspects of creating a culture of innovation and excellence; providing you with a model or framework for thinking about the topic, conversations about what it means in practice, and exercises to help you begin to apply it to your work. The sessions are held from 3:00-5:00 pm every other Tuesday during the regular academic year and once a month during the summer.

The first session will focus on discovering and developing your strengths. In preparation, you will need to pick up a copy of Strengths Based Leadership from Sarah Hedstrom in the CTL area, and complete an online inventory. Please bring your results to the session.

CTL Night at the Theatre

The Living Newspaper Project
Thursday, February 10, 2011, 7:00 pm

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend and bring a guest to the Theatre Department's production of The Living Newspaper Project on February 10th at 7:00 pm in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater.

Inspired by the original Living Newspapers of the Federal Theater Project in the 1930s, this student-devised performance will use a range of nonfiction sources to explore a current social issue. Ensemble members will gather interviews, articles, and multimedia—and generate their own writing—to create and stage a totally unique piece of socially conscious theatre. The production is directed by Sarah Myers.

Attendees are invited to a panel discussion, talk-back with the student actors, and a dessert reception immediately following the production. Please join us for this event. A limited number of free tickets to this showing will be available to the first faculty and staff contacting Sarah Hedstrom at hedstrom@augsburg.edu .

Tutors Needed

We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss. We especially need tutors on Tuesdays.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Attn Students: 1098T Tax Forms are now Available

Your 2010 1098T tax form is now available online. You may access it by going to the Enrollment Center web site, www.augsburg.edu/enroll and on the right hand side, log into your student account. It is only available online through your Augsburg student account and will not be mailed out. Parents who have access to view your student account will also be able to view your 1098T form. It will be listed under "Your Bills".

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. Scholastic Connections Applications are Available

Scholastic Connections is a scholarship and mentorship program for undergraduate students of color (American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, Pan-Afrikan, and Pan Asian) at Augsburg College. Students who are successful in their application process and are selected to participate, receive a $5000 scholarship and are paired with a successful alum of color that serves as mentor for the Scholar.

Seven "new" Scholars will be selected for the program for 2011-12.

Eligibility Criteria:
Current Augsburg student or advanced-standing transfer student
Demonstrated financial need
Demonstrated leadership ability or potential
Demonstrated community involvement on or off campus
GPA of 2.0 or higher

Fleece Donations Wanted for Homeless Families

Please help support Augsburg's Special Education Department, along with special education students involved with Public Achievement at Fridley Middle School, by donating fleece fabric material that will be used to create blankets. Monetary donations are also welcome to go towards the purchase of fleece material from fabric shops. The blankets created by the students will then be donated to homeless families in the area. Now until February 26, 2011 donations can be dropped-off in the Education Department office suite located in Sverdrup Hall's lower level.

Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Nominations

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

The Oren Gateway Center is Augsburg's newest residential facility and is a substance free environment. In order to live in this space for the 2011-2012 academic year, students must obtain an application by e-mailing Cyndy Rowe, Housing Specialist for the Department of Residence Life, at rowe@augsburg.edu. These applications are then submitted to Cyndy via e-mail. All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 18, 2011.

Nominations are currently being accepted for the 12th annual Augsburg Leadership Awards taking place on Monday, April 11. Any student, staff, faculty, or community member may nominate a fellow student leader, student group, or student group advisor for these awards; self-nominations are also accepted. Nomination packets are due no later than 4:30pm on Friday, March 25. Thru Another's Lens - TODAY

The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.

This third session in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on race, racism, and ways to take action against racism in everyday life.

It's an age of evolving definitions, and Maximum Verbosity, the original lords of loquacity, are taking on the legislation of love in a new romantic comedy set against the exploits of the ancient heroes. Biblical figures, Greek gods, and enraged ex-lovers all come into conflict in this comically cacophanous quest.
