Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - TODAY

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Matthew Beckman will present: "The dance of the water flea: Imaging Daphnia movement and cloning putative genes involved in the development and function of the motor program"

Daphnids exhibit a rich motor behavioral repertoire which is important for food acquisition and avoidance of predation. To date there have been no studies of the pharmacology, genetics or development of the Daphnia nervous system. We are building tools to study Daphnia movement and we are in the process of mining the genome of Daphnia pulex for putative genes involved in the development and control of the dopaminergic nervous system. Preliminary studies in which we have manipulated the neurochemistry of Daphnia indicate a role for dopamine in motor control. This work aims to further develop imaging tools, and to clone and characterize the genes involved in the development and function of dopamine neurons in Daphnia.

When: Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 4:15 – 5:15 p.m.
Where: Science Hall 123

(Please note that there will be two additional faculty candidate seminars. These will be held January 27 and February 3.)

Available Roles: 2 women, 2 men, 1 pianist

Belle Reprieve is a cross-dressing, farcical romp that re-visions Tennessee Williams’s characters from A Streetcar Named Desire: Mitch (a fairy disguised as a man), Stella (a woman disguised as a woman), Stanley (a butch lesbian) and Blanche (a man in a dress). Using the famous film version of the play as a launchpad and cabaret music as a theatrical mouthpiece, the play examines sexual politics and gender performance in American life and theater.

If you are auditioning for one of the four character roles, please prepare 30 seconds of a “butch” song and 30 seconds of a “femme” song, to be performed a cappella in those gendered styles.

If you are interested in auditioning for the role of the pianist, please prepare 1-2 minutes of a cabaret-style song with or without vocals.

Auditions will also include some improvisational ensemble work. Readings from the script will be conducted during the callback audition. For more information please contact Eric Dobratz (stage manager): dobratz@augsburg.edu

The auditions will be held jointly. You will sign up for a 1 hour time slot on the Theatre doors. Half of your audition will be spent on each show. Please specify if you are only auditioning for one show.

If you would like to practice dancing for Anything Goes students will be rehearsing Saturday at 2:30pm and Sunday at 7:00pm. Meet in the Atrium at those times.

The filmmakers write: "Our intention is to reverse the widespread stereotypes about growing older and inspire all women to keep doing it - it being whatever turns them on - from following intellectual, political and artistic passions to finding romance and having great sex."

All are welcome!

Films (Student Lounge, 4:30-6:30):

February 25th: SAY MY NAME -
"Sisters, mothers, businesswomen, role models, music artists—in an industry dominated by men and noted for misogyny, the unstoppable female lyricists of SAY MY NAME speak candidly about class, race, and gender in pursuing their passions as female MCs. From hip hop’s birthplace in the Bronx to the ladies of grime on London’s eastside, emerging artists to world renowned stars like MC Lyte, Monie Love, Roxanne Shanté, Estelle, Erykah Badu and many more, these are women turning adversity into art."

March 2, Sateren, 7-10pm (this is not part of the Feminist Film Series but part of the Native American Film Series): Augsburg's Native American Film Series brings us "Tracey Deer presents: CLUB NATIVE".
Hosted by professor and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Machiorlatti. This documentary "raises critical questions about belonging and indigenity, the heartbreak of 'marrying out' of the Mohawk Nation, and the unjust patriarchal laws that disenfranchise Native women. It is a candid and engrossing work about the pain, confusion, and frustration suffered by many First Nations women, but also a testament to the triumph of love and the resilience of the human spirit."

April 8: TEA & JUSTICE
"chronicles the experiences of three women who joined the New York Police Department during the 1980s—the first Asian women to become members of a force that was largely white and predominantly male."
