Tutors Needed

We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Please e-mail Elena Eveslage at eveslage@augsburg.edu if interested in tutoring.

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - THURSDAY

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Matthew Beckman will present: "The dance of the water flea: Imaging Daphnia movement and cloning putative genes involved in the development and function of the motor program"

Daphnids exhibit a rich motor behavioral repertoire which is important for food acquisition and avoidance of predation. To date there have been no studies of the pharmacology, genetics or development of the Daphnia nervous system. We are building tools to study Daphnia movement and we are in the process of mining the genome of Daphnia pulex for putative genes involved in the development and control of the dopaminergic nervous system. Preliminary studies in which we have manipulated the neurochemistry of Daphnia indicate a role for dopamine in motor control. This work aims to further develop imaging tools, and to clone and characterize the genes involved in the development and function of dopamine neurons in Daphnia.

When: Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 4:15 – 5:15 p.m.
Where: Science Hall 123

(Please note that there will be two additional faculty candidate seminars. These will be held January 27 and February 3.)

Staff Appreciation/Outstanding Staff Nominations

Nominate a colleague for a Staff Recognition/Outstanding Staff Award!

The Outstanding Staff Award is to recognize exceptional Augsburg staff members who exemplify the mission of the college through their actions. Recipients consistently go above the call of duty to provide service to others and/or make innovative and outstanding contributions to enhance the objectives of their department or the Augsburg Community.

Outstanding Staff Award nominees must have a complete nomination packet that includes:
• Nomination Form
• At least TWO letters of recommendation

The nomination and one of the recommendations may be from the same individual; however, staff members may not nominate themselves for this award, and current Staff Senate members are not eligible for nomination.

Division vice presidents are asked to nominate a minimum of two staff members from their division, but any current staff, faculty, or student may also nominate individuals or write a letter of recommendation.

Letters of recommendation should specifically describe how the nominated staff member meets the criteria stated above.

Copies of the nomination form are available at:
web.augsburg.edu/staffsenate/nomination.doc

Nominators and nominees should plan to be present at the Staff Appreciation gathering on Thursday, March 10 at 2:30 p.m. in East Commons, Christensen Center where the Outstanding Staff Award recipients will be announced. We will also honor those who celebrated their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and 30th anniversaries in 2010.

Please return all nomination forms and letters of recommendation to Kevin Cheatham at CB 47 or SCI 152 by Friday, February 18 at 4 p.m. Thanks.

Engman Prize Deadline Extended

The deadline for submitting manuscripts for the John Engman Writing Prize, a literary award sponsored by Murphy Square and the Augsburg English Department, has been extended until Friday, January 28th at 3:00.

Judges have not read the manuscripts that writers have already submitted; the extension has nothing to do with the quality of the submissions.

Writers may submit up to three manuscripts in the categories of creative non-fiction and fiction; those who have submitted work already in these categories may submit additional manuscripts for consideration. All poetry entries must include three poems.

Writers may submit work in more than one category, but can only win in one category. Each entry must include five copies of each work and be accompanied by a cover letter, listing the name of the writer and the titles of the work enclosed. Names of the authors and poets must not be listed on the works submitted.

Application cover letters and supporting manuscripts must be delivered to the English department office, 221A Memorial Hall, by 3 p.m. on Friday, January 28th. This is not a postmark deadline. Judges intend to inform writers of their decisions in February.

Women's Resource Center Lunch and Film 1/26

Please join us next Wednesday, January 26, in 207 Sverdrup from 12:30-1:30 for the first Spring Brown Bag Lunch and Feminist Film. We will be showing STILL DOING IT: THE INTIMATE LIVES OF WOMEN OVER 60. This film explores the lives of "nine extraordinary women, age 67-87, [who] express with startling honesty and humor how they feel about themselves, sex and love in later life." The filmmakers write: "Our intention is to reverse the widespread stereotypes about growing older and inspire all women to keep doing it - it being whatever turns them on - from following intellectual, political and artistic passions to finding romance and having great sex."

All are welcome!

Spring Brown Bag Lunches and Feminist Film Series 2011:

Lunches (207 Sverdrup):

Tuesday, Feb 15, 12-1: Sarah Griesse will talk with faculty and staff about the procedure for handling student reports of sexual assault.

Wed, March 23, 12:30-1:30 - An experiential session of Mindfulness-Based
Stress Reduction with founder of Heartwood Mindfulness Practice Center,
Judith Lies. Lies has been an instructor of Mindfulness-Based Stress
Reduction in medical, mental health, professional, educational,
religious, and corporate settings for 17 years. She completed the
professional training with Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1993 and currently studies
with Thich Nhat Hanh and his monks and nuns in France and the U.S.

Thurs, April 7, 12-1 (note date change) - John Zobitz will discuss Julie Des Jardin's book, _The Madame Curie Complex: The Hidden History of Women in Science_. (Des Jardin is a former Augsburg faculty member.)

Films (Student Lounge, 4:30-6:30):

February 25th: SAY MY NAME -
"Sisters, mothers, businesswomen, role models, music artists—in an industry dominated by men and noted for misogyny, the unstoppable female lyricists of SAY MY NAME speak candidly about class, race, and gender in pursuing their passions as female MCs. From hip hop’s birthplace in the Bronx to the ladies of grime on London’s eastside, emerging artists to world renowned stars like MC Lyte, Monie Love, Roxanne Shanté, Estelle, Erykah Badu and many more, these are women turning adversity into art."

March 2, Sateren, 7-10pm (this is not part of the Feminist Film Series but part of the Native American Film Series): Augsburg's Native American Film Series brings us "Tracey Deer presents: CLUB NATIVE".
Hosted by professor and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Machiorlatti. This documentary "raises critical questions about belonging and indigenity, the heartbreak of 'marrying out' of the Mohawk Nation, and the unjust patriarchal laws that disenfranchise Native women. It is a candid and engrossing work about the pain, confusion, and frustration suffered by many First Nations women, but also a testament to the triumph of love and the resilience of the human spirit."

April 8: TEA & JUSTICE
"chronicles the experiences of three women who joined the New York Police Department during the 1980s—the first Asian women to become members of a force that was largely white and predominantly male."
