Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - TODAY

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Phil Jensen will present: "Activin Signaling Links Diet and Metabolism during Drosophila Development"

How can animals adjust metabolism to diet? The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster increases its size over one hundred-fold during a five-day period of development, and this transformation occurs even when animals are grown on a variety of food sources. The fly, therefore, is an excellent model system for studying the balance of cellular metabolism and growth. This seminar will highlight a novel molecular signaling event that links two evolutionarily conserved signaling pathways - Activin signaling and insulin signaling - to integrate diet and metabolism during development of the fruit fly.

Tutors Needed

We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

We need stories from students, faculty, and staff who can share with us how the state grant benefits students, their families, and Augsburg overall.

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus.

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, February 2

The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.

The kick off to this series occurred on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session looked to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Now, each session will focus on a particular social identity category while also considering how various oppression dynamics intersect (e.g., class, disability/nondisability, ethnicity, gender, race, religious & spiritual identity, sexual orientation). It is not required to have attended this session on Wednesday, November 3 to attend this or future sessions.

This third session in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on race, racism, and ways to take action against racism in everyday life.

So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!

Budgeting in a Tough Student Org Economy - 1/31

CAO welcomes ALL student leaders to Budgets and Budgeting in a Tough Student Org Economy, the first Spring semester installment to the campus's Student Leadership Series. The goal of this series is to strengthen the awareness, leadership, management, and organizational skills of student leaders around a myriad of different topics.

This will discuss strategies for budgeting, including but not limited to how to lay out clear, organized budgets, what goes into creating a budget, how to project future spending, as well as how to work with a more limited budget. This session will be especially helpful to student organizations which either (1) are already commissioned and will need to submit an annual budget request to Day Student Government or (2) are applying for commissioned status for the first time.

Ann Garvey, Vice President for Student Affairs, will facilitate this workshop on Monday, January 31 at 5:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100.

Please remember, commissioned student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than two workshops per semester. Chartered student organizations are required to send at least one representative to no less than one workshop per semester.

Additionally, these workshops are for all student leaders on campus. So if you are not part of a formal organization, feel free to attend.

All Nighter in Wonderland

Alice requests your presence at the All Nighter in Wonderland this Friday, January 28 in Christensen Center. Doors open at 9:30 pm, inflatables, food, caricatures, magic show, black jack, henna, and more! Comedian BO BURNHAM performs at midnight, followed by a dance at 1 am. Students must present Augsburg ID at entrance and may bring one guest. Donations suggested. The first 300 students may receive T shirts.

Car Seat

I found a toddler size car seat in the street outside the Augsburg House yesterday (1/26). It had been there overnight, and so I brought it in so that it didn't get wet or damaged.

If you know who it belongs to, please email me so it can be returned. Otherwise, at the end of this week, I'm going to donate it.
