Teaching and Learning

Teaching and Technology Tapas

The IT Liaisons for Computing (LFCs) have been working to redesign our traditional technology training efforts. We were interested in developing ways to introduce new technologies that can be integrated into the effective teaching and learning practice of busy faculty and staff. Our answer was tapas.

Tapas are small plates of delicious food which can be eaten as appetizers or combined to form a meal shared with friends. Similarly, our Teaching and Technology Tapas are tasty bite-sized technology tips which will be presented by several IT staff in 3 to 5 minute segments. You can drop by for just a few topics or stay to experience an entire workshop. Please join us for:

"Teaching and Technology Tapas: Web Browser Tools and Tips"
Wednesday, November 3 from 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Christensen Center Marshall Room

About the Workshop
Navigating and utilizing information on the Internet has become a ubiquitous task in our daily work, yet learning how to best leverage tools of a web browser can often be overlooked. Our Browser Tapas menu will offer a wide assortment of tools and tasty tips to help you leverage your browser in powerful ways.

The presentation will be informal so please feel free to come and go as your schedule allows - we've designed the program with this in mind! Content is appropriate for users with all levels of computing experience.

We look forward to seeing you!

CTL Night at the Theatre

The Learned Ladies
Saturday, November 13, 2010, 7:00 pm

The Center for Teaching and Learning invites Augsburg faculty and staff to attend and bring a guest to the Theatre Department's production of The Learned Ladies on November 13th at 7:00 pm in the Tjornhom-Nelson Theater.

The great comic genius Molière wrote The Learned Ladies in 1672, a year before his death, and it is considered one of his mature masterpieces. In this play, a family is thrown into disarray when the mother becomes fixated on an intellectual charlatan. The play evolves into a hilarious portrayal of the intellectual perversions sometimes seen in the world of academia (and elsewhere), when genuine quest for knowledge becomes replaced by pseudo-intellectuality, pretention, inflated self-importance, and power-mongering. "This sophisticated satire sparkles with wit, ridicules hypocrisy, and . . . reveals that human folly has not diminished during the past three hundred years."

Attendees are invited to a dessert reception and discussion immediately following the production in the Foss Concourse area. Director Martha Johnson, along with student actors from the show, will be part of a discussion during the dessert reception. Please join us for this event.

A limited number of free tickets to this showing will be available to the first faculty and staff contacting Sarah Hedstrom at hedstrom@augsburg.edu .

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Tuesday, November 23, 12:00-1:15, Century Room (Note Room Change)

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. The remaining sessions are scheduled as follows:

November 23, 2010, Century Room – Level of Academic Challenge (Amy Gort)
December 16, 2010, OGC 111 – Active and Collaborative Learning (Velma Lashbrook)
February 17, 2011, OGC 100 – Student-Faculty Interaction (Lori Peterson)
March 24, 2011, OGC 100 – Enriching Educational Experiences (Lori Brandt Hale)
April 21, 2011, OGC 100 – Supportive Campus Environment (Ann Garvey)

Light refreshments will be served. RSVP to hedstrom@augsburg.edu

Augsburg Mental Health Support Group

Been thinking about starting an Augsburg Mental Health Support group. Let me know if you are interested in a message or post here... trying to find people interested in being members or co-founders... College can be the most stressful and anxiety provoking experience for young adults.

For those of you who don't know, I have suffered from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and general anxiety for almost ten years. My early years in college were intense with these issues, and I would like to provide a support group for those experiencing their individual tough times.

I am envisioning a once a week or bi-weekly meeting where everybody can share their views, problems, solutions, and simply just talk about issues related to mental illness. The group will support everyone's privacy, and if I can find enough interest I will look into getting official Augsburg support or funds.

Thru Another's Lens - TODAY

The Luther Hall/Oren Gateway Center (LOGC) ResLife Staff and the Department of Residence Life is beginning a safe dialogue series for community members with the goals of (1) creating awareness and knowledge around issues of human diversity and (2) contemplating how students, staff, and faculty can take action for social justice within their own communities and in the world. This series is entitled "Thru Another's Lens."

There will be 7 sessions in this series with one taking place approximately each month from November to April. The series will be one of single-issue focus, meaning a particular session will focus on oppression dynamics in one of the following social identity categories: class, disability/nondisability, gender, race & ethnicity, religious/spiritual identities, and sexual orientation.

The kick off to this series will occur on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session will look to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Basically, the first session on November 3 will set a foundation for continued conversations; however, please keep in mind that this series is constructed so that people can come to sessions of interest and not others.

So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!

If you have any questions, please contact Will O'Berry at oberry@augsburg.edu or a member of the LOGC ResLife Staff.

Free sunglasses as well as dessert will be provided for attendees!

The Guerrilla Girls Are Coming

In the mid-eighties, a group of women artists took to the streets (with clever and politically devastating posters) to protest the lack of work by women artists and artists of color in museums. Working anonymously to expose sexism and racism in the art world, these women adopted the names of famous female artists and wore gorilla masks to protect themselves from the angry art world elite. Calling themselves The Guerrilla Girls, they have taken their activism from the U.S. to Canada, Japan, Ireland, Germany, and elsewhere - and have expanded their repertoire to include an attack on sexism and racism in Hollywood as well as in global politics.

And now, The Guerrilla Girls are coming to Augsburg! Please join us on Friday, November 5, at 5pm in the Chapel for a discussion/lecture/performance with Guerrilla Girl, Frida Kahlo. T-shirts, books, and posters will be on sale before and after the performance, with a book-signing after the performance, as well. The performance is free and open to all.

Limited spaces are also available for a special "Aestheticize Your Activism" workshop for students on Saturday, Nov. 6 from 10am-noon. If you are interested, please contact nathanso@augsburg.edu.

Auggies Advance to MIAC Men's Soccer Final

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/11/2/msoc110210.aspx?path=msoc

MINNEAPOLIS -- Chad Gilmer (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) headed home a service from Matt Bowman (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 26th minute, as Augsburg College advanced to the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer playoff championship game with a 1-0 win over Carleton College in a semifinal contest on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

With the win, Augsburg (14-4-1 overall) advances to the MIAC playoff championship game for the second time since the four-team playoffs were re-started by the MIAC in 2003. Augsburg, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will host No. 4-seed Concordia-Moorhead (13-5-1), which upset top-seed Macalester 3-1 on Tuesday in St. Paul.

The championship game will be played at a date and time to be determined at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field, with the winner earning the MIAC's automatic bid to the 60-team NCAA Division III national tournament. The game will feature a live video webcast and live statistics on Augsburg's GameCentral portal.

"Hosting the semifinal was nice," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Hosting the final will be as good an environment as you can get in college soccer."

Augsburg outshot No. 3-seed Carleton (11-7-1) by a 10-7 margin and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks in the game.

The lone goal of the game came at the 25:53 mark, when Bowman put a service into the box from the left side. Gilmer leaped and headed the ball past the Carleton goalie for his team-leading eighth goal of the season, with Bowman earning his sixth assist, tying him for the team lead in that category.

"Our goal came from a set piece -- and clearly we need to have those at this time of the year. Gilmer rose to the occasion once again getting on the end of a perfect service from Matt Bowman. Chad can do it all; he is strong in the back, incredible in the air, and really ambitious around the goal when he gets forward," Holker said. "We were sharp in the first half and we did what we needed to do to hold on to the result. The game was choppy all around -- not by fouls, but just by the ball not being settled and pinged around the way the two teams normally do."

Augsburg goalkeeper Will Morlock (FY, Grand Haven, Mich.) claimed four saves in goal for his seventh shutout of the season and third in a row. Augsburg will carry an opponent goalless streak of 342:34 into the conference championship game.

"Will was in firm control in the frame," Holker said. "Carleton tested him twice -- once when Wes Elfman (SR, Madison, Wis./Edgewood HS) turned the corner and Morlock snatched the cross and the other from a deceptive combination and strike from 20 yards out on top of the box -- both in the first half. His distribution was good and important for us to kill the game at the end."

Pete Semmer (SR, Del Mar, Calif./Bishop's School) had one save in goal for Carleton. Ryan Cammarota (JR, Neenah, Wis.) and Elfman had two shots each for the Knights.

"Carleton is a tremendous team," Holker said. "They play good soccer and have incredible individual players. Year after year, they do it the right way. They've been the standard for the rest of us to try and achieve."
