General Announcements

Community Shares of Minnesota - Did You Know?

Did you know that you can designate a gift to a specific organization when you give this year? A gift to Community Shares of Minnesota could be designated to The National Federation of the Blind Minnesota. In this election year, you might like to remember that those who are sighted take the privacy of election ballots for granted. One can be reasonably sure that the candidates marked are the same ones that are recorded.

However, blind people are in a different — and often uncomfortable — situation. They have to rely on a sighted spouse, friend or election judge to help them mark the candidates of their choice. This, of course, makes secrecy all but impossible.

Working with the Minnesota Secretary of State, the National Federation of the Blind of Minnesota worked to implement landmark legislation in 2002, which provided equipment that enabled blind people to mark their ballot in private for the first time ever.

Now on each Election Day the experience of voting proves to be even more gratifying — and moving — for the many blind people who are able to make their selection in private and independently.

Thank you for considering a gift to either Community Shares of Minnesota or The United Way...or both! If you need me to resend you the link to E-giving, let me know. ext. 1525 or daniels@augsburg.edu

How to Easily Stop Unwanted Mail

To easily stop unwanted mail: catalogs, magazine offers, and other mail offers go to: http://www.dmachoice.org

DMAchoice™ is an user-friendly online tool developed by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) that can help you to reduce unwanted postal mail. DMA was founded in 1917 and is the leading trade association for businesses and non-profit organizations that send direct mail, representing nearly 3,600 companies and organizations around the world.

For the purposes of this site, DMA divides direct mail into four categories: Credit Offers, Catalogs, Magazine Offers and Other Mail Offers. The Other Mail Offers category includes a variety of types of mail, such as donation requests, retail promotions, cable and phone offers, bank offers, and mail addressed to "current resident."

Note that the Credit Offers category will link you to the www.optoutprescreen.com service featured in the October 14, 2010 NextStep e-newsletter.

You can easily request to stop receiving mail from individual companies within each category or from an entire category at once.

To use the DMAchoice™ web site, you will need to create a simple log-in, and then you will have the option to manage catalogs, magazine offers, and other mail offers separately.

There is no cost to use this online service, and your choices will remain in effect for three years.

This useful site also allows you to add yourself to lists, and manage lists from specific companies or organizations. You will also be able to easily change your selections in the future should you wish.

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, Nov. 3

The Luther Hall/Oren Gateway Center (LOGC) ResLife Staff and the Department of Residence Life is beginning a safe dialogue series for community members with the goals of (1) creating awareness and knowledge around issues of human diversity and (2) contemplating how students, staff, and faculty can take action for social justice within their own communities and in the world. This series is entitled “Thru Another’s Lens.”

There will be 7 sessions in this series with one taking place approximately each month from November to April. The series will be one of single-issue focus, meaning a particular session will focus on oppression dynamics in one of the following social identity categories: class, disability/nondisability, gender, race & ethnicity, religious/spiritual identities, and sexual orientation.

The kick off to this series will occur on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session will look to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Basically, the first session on November 3 will set a foundation for the rest of the year; however, please keep in mind that this series is constructed so that people can come to sessions of interest and not others.

So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeways that you can apply in your life, then come join us!

If you have any questions, please contact Will O'Berry at oberry@augsburg.edu or a member of the LOGC ResLife Staff.
