Faculty-Student Research Funds
Applications for faculty-student research funding are available from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) by contacting shafer@augsburg.edu. A total of 8 grants for $750.00 will be awarded this academic year. Faculty are encouraged to submit proposals now even if applying for spring funding. Proposals for summer research are NOT being taken at this time; await future A-Mail announcements on the availability of summer research funds.

Scholarships for Spring 2011 in Central America

Participate in CGE's spring 2011 semester program in Central America and receive up to $2,500 in scholarships automatically!

• CGE Auggie Grant $1,000

• A one-time discount of $1,000

• An additional $500 discount will be given to any student who is an alum of a CGE short-term, summer, or semester program

No forms are required for this scholarships.


"Social Change in Central America: Exploring Peace, Justice and Community
Engagement"

Develop Spanish language skills through one-on-one Spanish courses, be immersed in the lives of homestay families, urban and rural communities, and learn with and from grassroots community organizations dedicated to work on issues related to conflict, foreign policy, gender, and economic and social justice.

Student Conference Travel Awards

Student Conference Travel Awards
Applications for student conference travel funding are available from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity (URGO) by contacting shafer@augsburg.edu. Faculty and student (s) are asked to collaborate on completing the application. Priority is given to students presenting research.

Application Deadlines
Award decisions are made on a rolling basis by the Committee on Faculty Development,
which has two meeting dates remaining this Fall Semester: December 6 and 20. Applications should be submitted to URGO at least two business days prior to scheduled meeting times.

Lutheran Brotherhood/Thrivent is sponsoring awards of $1,000 and up for students of color seeking to study abroad during summer 2011 in 6 different programs.

10TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM PHOTO CONTEST

Co-Sponsored by the Office of Public Relations & Communications, Dept. of Languages & Cross-Cultural Studies and Augsburg Abroad.

DEADLINE:
All entries must be submitted by THIS Friday, October 22, 2010 at 4pm in Murphy Place 200.

CATEGORIES:
Judges will be selecting photos that are representative of your cross-cultural experience. Categories include:
1. Landscapes/cityscapes
2. Photojournalism - local people and/or Augsburg students interacting with the setting, cultural interactions
3. Portraits – photo of a person or animal that reflects the culture in which he/she is pictured
People’s Choice Award: Augsburg student, faculty and staff will choose their favorite photo from the judge’s top picks from all three categories.
Rules for Submission

The contest is open to:
o All Augsburg students who have participated in a study abroad program approved by Augsburg.
o International students studying at Augsburg may also submit entries, using the Categories for Entry, that reflect their international experience in the U.S.

College of the Third Age is a lecture series that aims to promote lifelong learning in senior citizens. Our program is looking for a responsible, articulate, and customer service focused student who can manage our scheduling. We are looking for a student who can work 10-15 hours per week.

Traffic Issues for Saturday WEC/Graduate Classes

On Saturday, October 23, President Barack Obama will be visiting the University of Minnesota Minneapolis campus. President Obama is scheduled to appear at Northrop Mall at 12:30 PM.

If you have classes on Saturday, please take extra time to arrive to campus. We can expect additional traffic in the area, as well as street closures near the University of Minnesota campus. Specific street closures have not been announced as of yet.

As with every Weekend College class day, the Department of Public Safety will have an attendant posted at Lot L, so that only students with a WEC/Graduate parking permit may park in that lot. If you have challenges finding street parking, please use this lot.

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. Special Interest Housing

Special Interest Housing is an opportunity provided to you by the Department of Residence Life. It gives students the opportunity to create their living environment, and have it surrounding a specific interest. Residents who select Special Interest Housing will have their housing configuration guaranteed for the coming year.

Applications are currently available and can be picked up in the Urn/Mort Residence Life Office. The first part of the applications are due November 5, 2010.

Would you like to practice your Spanish in a lively and welcoming setting? Then join us for Spanish conversation group! All language levels are welcome - we promise there will be no grammar lessons. We meet every Thursday from 11:00 - 12:30 on the 2nd floor of the Christensen Center, in the Riverside Room. Signs will be posted. Come for 10 mins. or for the whole session, whatever works for you. McNair Birthday and Open House

Celebrate the anniversary of Ronald E. McNair, whose life and academic pursuits inspired the creation of the McNair Scholars Program. McNair was one of the seven astronauts that died during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger. His legacy and commitment to higher education continues through the McNair Program, as Scholars pursue their doctoral degrees and contribute to the growing number of underrepresented groups in graduate study.

Topics to discuss: What conditions prevent faculty and staff from coming/being out? Should we feel compelled or obligated to come/be out on campus? If so, when and to whom?

Please note that this is not an event for allies but rather for any faculty or staff member who identifies as LGBTQIA, whether or not s/he is out.

Get Your Flu Shot at Augsburg

The Human Resources Department is sponsoring a flu shot clinic through Homeland Health. Homeland Health provides flu shots to patients age 3 years and up. You must sign up in advance for your flu shot through Homeland Health's website:

Please bring your insurance card. Homeland Health is an in network provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medica Choice, HealthPartners, Preferred One, UCare, America's TPA, PrimeWest and Medicare. If you are not covered by one of these health plans, you may pay the $25.00 fee by cash or check. The flu shot clinics are taking place as follows:

Friday, November 5, 2010 from 8:00 am - noon
Tuesday, November 9, 2010 from noon - 2:30 PM

Both clinics will be held in Lindell Library, Room 202. This clinic is open to all staff, faculty, students and family members. This year's flu shot also contains the H1N1 vaccination.

Disability Pride Brown-Bag Lunch, Oct 22

What do Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, Paul Orfalo founder of Kinkos, and Orlando Bloom all have in common with many others? They are people who say that their disability is a gift which has helped them to succeed.

Join CLASS staff this Friday (10/22) at noon in the Augsburg Room for "Clips and Chips" a Brown-bag lunch discussion about disability pride. Short video clips will start our discussions. Bring your lunch, and we'll provide a selection of snack chips.
