Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Crime Alert: Theft in OGC

Sometime between Saturday evening (Sept 4) and Sunday afternoon (Sept 5), an unknown person removed a wallet from clothing that had been left unattended in a communal bathroom. The wallet was later recovered, but with cash missing.

If you have any information regarding this incident, please notify Augsburg's Department of Public Safety. You can reach DPS all day, every day by dialing 1717 from an on-campus phone or 612-330-1717 from an off-campus phone.

You Can Help Prevent Crime at Augsburg!

- Don't leave your valuables unattended.

- Lock your room whenever you leave, even if it is only for a minute.

- Be thoughtful of where your valuables are. Where possible, keep wallets, handbags and other valuables on your person or locked in a drawer. Leave unneeded valuable items at home.

- Always keep your car keys on your person. This is especially important if you have a remote unlocking device for your car. If a thief is able to take the remote unlocking device for your car, they simply need to walk through our parking lots and press the button until they see the lights flash on your vehicle.

- Immediately report suspicious activity to Augsburg's Department of Public Safety.

Terry Martin to Retire

After 24 years of service to Augsburg College and the Center for Teaching and Learning, Terry Martin has decided to retire effective September 7. She's planning to spend more time with her children, grandchildren, and friends, and looks forward to the simple things in life like just taking time to read a book. For most of CTL's history, she has been the coordinator to put things together, the catalyst to keep things moving, and the archivist to inform us of what happened before. She will be sorely missed. Her last major event is the coordination of our annual faculty and staff orientation this week. She has requested that there be no formal farewell, but I'm sure she won't mind if you stop by to wish her well.

Change to Classroom Trash and Recycling Procedure

Starting fall semester, all trash and recycling receptacles will be removed from classrooms and some meeting rooms throughout campus. Larger containers will be located in strategic hallway or central locations to make the disposal of refuse as easy as possible. Centralizing trash and recycling containers will make recycling and waste disposal more efficient and cost effective here at Augsburg College. Please place your trash and recycling in the appropriate containers at the trash/recycling station nearest to your classroom or meeting room on the way out of the building.

The initiative is being implemented by Custodial Services and Facilities Management in the hopes that it will increase consciousness of the recycling program and prevent commingling of trash and recyclable materials. This practice has been successful at other colleges like University of Minnesota in Bemidji and also at Macalester College.

Please take care to place items in the correct receptacle (for information on what can be recycled, visit http://www.augsburg.edu/green/rrr.html). Thank you for your cooperation and contribution to Augsburg's efforts to promote green practices.

Deb Hutchison Is Retiring

At the end of this week, Deb Hutchison is retiring from her post in the English Department Office. We will miss her. Deb has been our right arm, providing unflagging support and unflappable problem-solving, not to mention good humor and some treats. Though Deb wants to slip away quietly, you are welcome to come to Memorial 221A this week between 8:30 and 2 pm to say goodbye. Deb's last day is Thursday. We wish her well.

Event Announcements

Underwear: Not Just for Superheroes

Approximately 650 youth are homeless every night in Minnesota--10,000-20,000 a year! Some of the most basic needs that we may overlook can mean so much to a youth who goes without. Underwear and bras are among those basic necessities.

Augsburg College can make a difference. The Women's Resource Center is trying to fill up the Auntie's Closet rack with undergarments to benefit an event in October called Youth Connect. Youth Connect works to connect youth with resources that can empower them through their every day struggles. Any new underwear, new boxers, new briefs, or gently used bras could go to someone in need.

If you are unsure where to buy undies, there are several shopping opportunities right on the Light rail: one stop away on Lake Street, or at the Mall of America, and of course, any of your favorite shopping stores. People come in all shapes and sizes, so consider donating garments that you would wear yourself. A donation box will be located at the Welcome Desk in Christensen Center for the month of September.

For more information on how you can get involved, email Veronica at bergv@augsburg.edu

Look for Augsburg's own Superheroes on campus during September!
