Dr. Smadar Lavie on the Mizrahi-Palestinian Border

The first of the Women's Resource Center brown-bag lunches this year will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 12:30 in 207 Sverdrup. Anthropologist and Women's Studies and Religion scholar, Dr. Smadar Lavie, will give a paper on the Mizrahi-Palestinian border zone and feminist transnationalism (an abstract is below).

Please feel free to bring your lunch. Water, tea, hot chocolate, and instant coffee will be available.

"Where is the Mizrahi-Palestinian Border Zone? Interrogating Feminist Transnationalism Through the Bounds of the Lived"

Gloria Anzaldua describes the border as an "open wound…where the Third World grates against the First and bleeds. And before a scab forms, it hemorrhages again, the lifeblood of two worlds merging to form a third country; a border culture." She proposes that this "third country" is where South/South feminist coalitions are possible without the mediation of U.S.-European feminism. For Anzaldua, the border zone between transnational "hyphens" connotes fluidity and movement across boundaries. In the case of Euro-Israel, the volatile gender/race/nation South/South coalition among subaltern Arabs is forced upon both Mizrahi ("Eastern," Hebrew) women and Palestinian women who have Israeli citizenship. These women do not want to be in this "third country," which emerges from the dispossession of their lands, languages, and cultures. But they are stuck.

I argue that the Mizrahi and Palestinian-Israeli "hyphens" are what allow subaltern, non-European women in the State of Israel to transform their trapped status into the radical act of "staying put." "Staying put" here means using the state's limits on mobility as a source of empowerment. "Staying put" means dancing delicately on those "hyphens" while concurrently rejecting them, for the act of "staying put" is not representational, but somatic—and therefore difficult to theorize about outside of the bounds of lived experience. I question the feminist ethnographic renditions of "discourse" and "transnationalism" by examining the limits that feminist post-colonial theory encounters when it attempts to describe the lived horrors of the border zone.

Thus, this text challenges the modes of the textualization of gendered ethnographic experience. It calls into question not only the older "reflexive" style of feminist ethnographies, but also the new genres of feminist ethnography that call for—as well as problematize—the ethnographer's commitment to bear public witness to suffering.

Farmers Market TODAY - Squashes in Focus

*Special note* it may be a wee smaller today as one farmer had something come up with the family and won't make it. But you can expect plenty of options still. See you soon!

WEST BANK FARMERS MARKETS
Tuesdays
Brian Coyle 11-1
Augsburg Foss Center 2-5

MUSICIAN OF THE WEEK
Now that the semester has restarted, the market plans to show off the talents of Augsburg musicians each week. We'll start with Becky Shaheen who will be accompanied by a guitarist and conga player, starting around 3 pm. If you know of any musicians that would like to play, please put them in touch with me.

VEGETABLE OF THE WEEK - SQUASHES
Ahh, squashes, one of my favorite things about the fall. There's the summer squashes, like zucchinis, but they don't compare to the richness of winter squashes. For a field guide to the beautiful varieties that we're starting to see at the market, please go here: http://www.foodsubs.com/Squash.html Below is a little info about choosing and if you wish, storing them for the long term. And of course, it's always followed by a recipe.

Choosing Your Squash:
Winter squash matures on the vine and develops an inedible, thick, hard rind and tough seeds. Choose firm, well-shaped squash that are heavy for their size and have a hard, tough skin. Do not choose those that have sunken or moldy spots. Avoid squash with cuts or punctures in the skin. Also, slight variations in skin color do not affect flavor. A tender rind indicates immaturity, which is a sign of poor quality in winter squash varieties.

To Store Winter Squash:
Place whole winter squash on top of thick pads of newspapers in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location, preferably between 45 and 50 degrees F. Check on a regular basis for rot and use within three to six months depending on variety of squash. Refrigerate tightly wrapped cut pieces of winter squash, such as banana, and use within 5 days. Once a squash is cooked (by steaming or baking), the flesh of the squash can be stored frozen until needed.

To Prepare and Use Winter Squash: Look for squash that feels heavy for its size and has hard, deep-colored skin free from blemishes. All varieties are great for puréeing, roasting and baking. Once squash is cooked and mashed, it can be used in soups, main dishes, vegetable side dishes, even breads, muffins, custards and pies.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK - SQUASH SOUP

Squash season nicely coincides with my other favorite part of the fall and winter - soup season. Here's a soup recipe that recommends using butternut but it can easily be replaced with many other varieties. Personally, I like to use two different types, maybe a tan one and a bright orange one, leave the skin, and partially blend it to have splashes of different color in the soup. Topped with some fried bacon pieces, it can't be beat.
Ingredients

* 6 cups (about 2 large squash) seeded 2-inch wide chunks butternut squash
* Melted butter, for brushing
* 1 tablespoon kosher salt, plus 1 teaspoon
* 1 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper, plus 1/2 teaspoon
* 3 cups chicken or vegetable stock
* 4 tablespoons honey
* 1 teaspoon minced ginger
* 4 ounces heavy cream
* 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Brush the flesh of the squash with a little butter and season with 1 tablespoon salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper. On a sheet pan lay the squash flesh side up. Roast for about 30 to 35 minutes or until the flesh is nice and soft.

Scoop the flesh from the skin into a pot and add the stock, honey, and ginger. Bring to a simmer and puree using a stick blender. Stir in the heavy cream and return to a low simmer. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
