4 Auggies Named All-MIAC in Softball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Four Augsburg College softball players earned various All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, it was announced this week.

Outfielders Bri Dorale (FY, Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) and Jessa Hinz (JR, Richfield, Minn.) were both named to the All-MIAC squad, while first-baseman Brittney Bruzek (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) and third-baseman Jennifer Castillo (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn HS) received All-MIAC honorable-mention recognition. Castillo was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

For Castillo, it was her second all-conference recognition, after being named MIAC Rookie of the Year and an All-MIAC selection in 2008. Dorale, Hinz and Bruzek earned the first All-MIAC honor of their careers this year.

In her first season of collegiate softball, Dorale made an immediate impact for the Auggies, leading the team with a .367 batting average, 44 hits and 37 runs scored, while also recording a team-best .449 on-base percentage. Dorale also led the MIAC in stolen bases with 31 thefts in 35 attempts, a stolen-base total six more than the nearest competitor. In MIAC games-only, Dorale also led the league with 19 steals.

Her 37 runs were tied for the third-most in a single season in school history, while her 31 stolen bases were also third-best in the Auggie single-season record list.

A three-year starter in the outfield and at shortstop, Hinz had the best year of her career in 2010, hitting .338 with 45 hits, 29 runs scored, 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 15 RBI, a .496 slugging percentage and .385 on-base percentage. Her 11 doubles were tied for the 7th-most in a single season in school history, while her 133 at-bats are tied for fourth-best in a single season in school history.

In her three-year career (121 games, 120 starts), Hinz is hitting .291 with 100 hits, 71 runs scored, 19 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 50 RBI, a .410 slugging percentage and a .372 on-base percentage.

In her second season at Augsburg after playing her initial season at St. Thomas, Bruzek had the best year of her career, starting all 40 games and hitting .350 (40-for-117), with 20 runs scored, 11 doubles, while leading the team with six home runs and 40 RBI. Her .598 slugging percentage was also a team-high, while her .421 on-base percentage was third-best on the team.

Her 40 RBI were a single-season school record, while her six home runs were the second-most in a single season in school history. Among MIAC players in overall statistics, Bruzek's 40 RBI were a league-best, while her six home runs were fourth-best.

In her two seasons at Augsburg (70 games, 62 starts), Bruzek is hitting .277 (49-of-177) with 21 runs scored, 14 doubles, six home runs, 49 RBI, a .458 slugging percentage and .355 on-base percentage.

Castillo hit .295 this season, her third as Augsburg's starting third-baseman. She contributed 33 hits, 18 runs scored, six doubles, three triples and 20 RBI, with a .402 slugging percentage and a .331 on-base percentage, while also stealing eight bases in 10 attempts.

In her three-year career (starting all 115 games), Castillo is hitting .351 (124-of-353) with 18 doubles, six triples, 59 RBI, a .436 slugging percentage, .404 on-base percentage and 27 steals in 33 attempts. Her six career triples are tied for the eighth-most in Augsburg career history, while her 27 stolen bases are ninth-most.

Castillo was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As a part of the conference's sportsmanship initiative, members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Under fourth-year coach Tim Gormley, Augsburg finished the 2010 season at season at 21-19 overall, 11-11 in MIAC play. Augsburg reached the 20-win plateau for the second time in Gormley's four seasons with the Auggies, and the team's 21 wins are its most since the 1992 season, when it finished 24-12.
