Courage and Renewal Retreat Series

Courage and Renewal retreats encourage professionals to connect the inner life of heart, mind, and spirit with the outer life of work and service. Participants deepen their sense of purpose and meaning, expand their capacity to listen and be present, improve their ability to build trustworthy relationships, and find more courage to live authentically. They report renewed passion for work and a deeper commitment to serving others. They gain greater clarity about their vocation, and inspiration to do their best work with their students, colleagues, and communities.

Courage and Renewal groups consist of twenty participants who gather for five quarterly retreats over a 15-month period. Together they explore stories from their own journeys, reflections on current work, and insights from poets, storytellers, and diverse wisdom traditions. Participants are invited to reflect on their lives and work, listening to themselves and others with encouragement and compassion.

A Morning With Alfie Kohn - May 10

The Augsburg Education Department in collaboration with Minneapolis South High School invites you to a public presentation featuring author Alfie Kohn. This event will be held in the Hoversten Chapel, Foss Center from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM on May 10th.

Most schools are still more about memorizing facts and practicing skills than about teaching for understanding; they still exclude students from any meaningful decision-making role; and they still rely on grades, tests, homework, lectures, worksheets, competition, punishments and rewards. Alfie Kohn will explore the alternatives to each of these conventional practices, explaining why progressive education is the way to help people become critical thinkers and lifelong learners.

Alfie Kohn is the author of 11 books on education and human behavior, including The Schools Our Children Deserve, Punished by Rewards, and The Homework Myth. He lives (actually) in the Boston area and (virtually) at www.alfiekohn.org

Portfolio Workshops

Thursday, May 6, 12:30-3:30 or
Thursday, May 13, 9:00-noon
Lindell Library 202

The purpose of this workshop is to help candidates determine the various forms of evidence that can help build a strong portfolio. The focus is on evidence of teaching, but the strategies directly apply to scholarship and service as well. This workshop is not designed to replace departmental guidance and advice nor is it an analysis of the Handbook language as it applies to an individual; it does not represent the views of the CTP committee. Rather, this is a long standing CTL opportunity to help support candidates' preparation and is one that many colleagues have found to be useful. Facilitated by Diane Pike. RSVP to martin@augsburg.edu or x1229.
