LSAT Prep on Campus this Summer

Pre-Law Students: LSAT (Law School Admissions Test) Prep will be offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity.

The course will meet Wednesdays May 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. The course instructor previously taught with the Princeton Review and has scored in the 99th percentile on the exam. The course cost is only $150, which includes test prep materials. (Most LSAT tutors charge $150/hour; this course will get you 12 hours of instruction for the same price).

Augsburg staff, alums, as well as non-Augsburg students are welcome to register.

Luncheon Presentation with Garry Hesser

"Expanding the Sociological Imagination: Looking With Both Eyes".
Thursday, April 15, 11:30-1 in the Minneapolis Room.

Garry will be reflecting on his recent sabbatical travels and immersion as an experiential learner with the CGE Namibian Semester students and Ethiopians and former students, along with travels in the Middle East as a learner with Exploratas/Elderhostel. "I find myself pondering the power people's stories/narratives and how much that adds to one's understanding of reality."

Additional International Travel Funding Available


Due April 6

Faculty presenting a paper at an international conference are eligible for additional travel funding through CTL. Two $400 awards are available to supplement the annual travel award of $1200 for which faculty presenting a paper are eligible. (Canada is considered international.) These supplemental awards are determined competitively by the Committee on Faculty Development The funding year is June 1-May 31st.

On-Campus, Summer GRE Prep

Are you interested in going to graduate school? Most masters and doctoral programs require the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) for admission. GRE Prep is offered this summer on campus through the Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity. You'll learn the most effective ways tackle the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections on the GRE.

The course meets Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. for six weeks (May 25-June 29). The cost is only $40, which includes test prep materials; this is a fraction of the cost when compared to similar classroom GRE prep courses offered by Kaplan or the Princeton Review that cost over $1,000.

Augsburg staff, alums, as well as non-Augsburg students are welcome to register.

Summer GMAT Prep: Register Early- Space is Limited

Thinking about a Master of Business Administration program after graduation? Most MBA programs require the GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) for admission. The Augsburg MBA Program is partnering with the Princeton Review to provide GMAT preparation at a discounted rate.

The course will meet Wednesdays 6-9 p.m. for seven weeks (June 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30, and July 7 & 14). The cost is $549, which includes access to the Princeton Review's online student center, the Manual for the GMAT 8.3, and the GMAT Review 12th edition.

Secretary of State Speaking on Monday

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie is scheduled to meet and speak with students on several campuses in the coming month. In his talk entitled "Democracy and You," Ritchie will speak to the importance of voter participation, explain legislative changes to election law that impact students, and encourage them to become election judges and be a part of the elections process.

He will be at Augsburg College on Monday, April t at noon in the Minneapolis Room (2nd floor Christensen Center).

Free lunch for all students who show up by 11:45.

The first-ever Augsburg College Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA) Community Engagement Fair! Come by and talk with staff members of LGBTQIA organizations from around the Twin Cities.

Take the Plunge-Spanish Conversation TODAY

Has spring given you the urge to take some risks, to challenge yourself in a new and exciting way? Then take the plunge and join us for Spanish conversation group this Thurs., 4/1, when we meet to chat in Spanish about a wide variety of topics. Also, Michael Kidd will be joining us this week to share some photos and stories about his recent visit to Spain. Remember: the setting is very relaxed and you don't need to speak Spanish well to join us. All language levels are welcome - we promise there won't be any grammar lessons! We meet between 11:00 and 12:30 in the Augsburg Rm., 2nd fl. Christensen Center. Drop in for 10 mins. or for the whole session, whatever works for you. Bring your lunch if you wish. Hunger Banquet: Poverty in Minnesota

Julia Dinsmore, author of 'My Name is Child of God...Not Those People,' will address students, faculty, and staff about the reality of poverty in Minnesota. Her story combines poetry, wisdom, faith, and strength. Suggested donations are $15 for faculty and staff, $5 for students. Dinner provided. Please come and hear Julia's passionate first-hand experience. All donations will go to A Minnesota Without Poverty.

Juried Art Exhibition Submission Deadline - TODAY

Submit artwork for the All-Student Juried Art Exhibition today at the Christensen Center Art Gallery, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Augsburg invites all currently enrolled students to enter work into the juried exhibition.

Requirements:

All artwork must have been created since April, 2009.

Number of entries is limited to 3 per person.

Medium: 2D, 3D, Digital, and Film.
(Short film entries must be submitted in Flash or QuickTime on a
disc and be less than 10 minutes.)

All work must be prepared for installation, no exceptions.

All work must be accompanied by a "Juried Show Entry Form," available in the Christensen Center Art Gallery.

Lavender Graduation & Awards Ceremony honors all LGBTQIA and ally-identified students graduating from Augsburg College. The recipient of the Karen Neitge Scholarship and LGBTQIA Student Leadership Award are also honored during this ceremony.

Sverdrup Lecture Events, April 12-13

Dr. Mark Rea, director of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center and a professor in Architecture and Cognitive Sciences will present, "The surprisingly important role of light and dark on human health" On Monday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. in the Hoversten Chapel. Tuesday, April 13, at 11:00 a.m. in the Hoversten Chapel, he will present, "Sunrise and sunset: Why it will be hard to colonize other planets." Dr. Mark Rea teaches courses in leadership and in visual and circadian processes, conducts research in many areas including circadian photobiology, mesopic vision, psychological responses to light, lighting engineering and visual performance.

The General Leif J. Sverdrup Visiting Scientist program is made possible through the Sverdrup Lecture Endowment Fund and the Minnesota Space Grant Consortium. These events are free and open to the public. For more information concerning parking or the events, please call 612-330-1104.

Conversation on Loss of a Loved One

All students are invited to a conversation with Dr. Pauline Boss, a University of Minnesota social science professor and author of the book "Loss, Trauma and Resilience" on Tuesday, April 6 from 3:30 - 5 p.m. in the Augsburg Room.

Losing a parent or close loved one can have an enormous impact on a student's social, emotional, academic and career development At CCHP we are aware of many students facing this kind of loss.

Dr. Boss teaches grief and loss at the U of M's department of Family Social Science. After 9/11 she went to New York to work with families who had losses.

We encourage students who have experienced the loss of a loved one to attend this session with Dr. Boss. If you are able to attend, please call the CCHP office at 612-330-1707 so we may know how many people to expect. Refreshments will also be provided.

Please join us today at 5 p.m. to hear Chris Policinski, President and Chief Executive Officer of Land O'Lakes, speak on the importance of a strong agriculture in dustry.Mr. Policinski has over 30 years of experience in the food industry, including leadership positions with Kraft General Foods, Bristol Meyers Squib and The Pillsbury Company. Land O'Lakes is a Minnesota-based privately owned company which does business in the U.S. and more than 50 countries and has sales of over $12 billion.

The event will take place in Kennedy Center Rooms 303-305 at 5:00 p.m. with light refreshments and networking, and Mr. Policinski will begin his remarks around 5:15 p.m. A question and answer period will follow.
