"Life on the Border" Exhibition Opening - Friday

"Life on the Border: The Karen People of Burma"

Christensen Center Art Gallery, Augsburg College
March 5 – April 1, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, March 5, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Questions and Answer Session: 6:00 p.m.
Robert Gerhardt in Christensen Center Art Gallery

Artist Discussion: Saturday, March 6, during the Nobel Peace Prize Forum seminars

"Life on the Border: The Karen People of Burma" is a series of thirty black and white photos from artist Robert Gerhardt that document the month he spent in 2006 among the displaced Karen refugees on the Thai-Burma border. Inspired by a piece on National Public Radio, Gerhardt self-financed his trip to the Mae Tao Clinic, a medial clinic that aids thousands of refugees suffering from malnutrition and disease, effects of the civil war between the Karen and the Burmese. When he arrived, his project quickly refocused from documenting the work of the clinic to illuminating the everyday challenges the Karen refugees face. Gerhardt's photos capture an austere reality of life as a refugee but also an intimate view of the Karen people who suffer harsh adversity in hopes of reclaiming a land of their own.

Robert Gerhardt studied anthropology and sociology at the College of the Holy Cross and continued on to receive his M.F.A. from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. He currently works as a photographer at the Museum of Modern Art.

Tasha Germain Community Health in So. Africa

Follow Natasha Germain during her semester in South Africa. Natasha is a winner of the prestigious US State Department Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad.

http://tashagermain.blogspot.com/2010/02/mccord-hospital-and-wknd-at-beach.html

A short excerpt:
"Getting the attention of South African's is something I finally learned to do this weekend. There were multiple times when I said 'Excuse me, Excuse me. Sir? Excuse me!' Trying to get their attention. They would not respond even when I was inches away, and as soon as I said "Sawubona!" Their head jerks up - finally. Sunday, I realized that I need to say 'I'm sorry?' in place of excuse me. It's amazing what a difference "I'm sorry" makes in place of 'Excuse me?' "

Interested in a similar experience, consider studying abroad. Deadline to Study Abroad in Summer and Fall is March 15.

Haglund Named to USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/2/26/mcc022610.aspx?path=mcross

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg's Brent Haglund (SR, Fridley, Minn.) earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, it was announced Friday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

The USTFCCCA All-Academic award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and must finish in the top 35 among the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.

A Youth & Family Ministry major with a 3.67 grade-point average, Haglund has earned numerous honors both in the classroom and on the cross country course during his Augsburg career. Haglund was a two-time All-MIAC and All-Central Region performer in cross country and was also two-time participant in the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships, finishing as high as 57th. Haglund is currently the Augsburg school record for the 6K distance in cross country and the 3,000- and 5,000-meter distance in indoor track as well as the 5,000- and 10,000-meter distances in outdoor track and field.

As a team, Augsburg recorded its highest ever NCAA regional finish in 2009, where five of Augsburg's top seven runners achieved personal-best times, including three all-region performances, as the Auggies recorded a seventh-place team finish.

1-4 Bedrooms in Heart of Uptown Near Lake Calhoun

My meditation center rents out of a big duplex in uptown and for the last few years, we've filled both apartments. In June, we can't fill the entire house so we're looking for friendly folks to sublet the second apartment in the building. 4 bedrooms, kitchen, bath, rent+utilities are $2100. Great deal for a great place with superb neighbors near Lake Calhoun. We may sublet per room ($525 in that case) so let me know if you're interested in 1-4 great rooms.

The meditation center is on the 3rd floor, our friends will rent out the 2nd floor, and the subletters would occupy the 1st floor - not in the meditation center. However, one would have to be comfortable with living under the same roof as a public meditation center.
