Speaking of Scholarship Wed. 3/10: Joe Erickson

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend Speaking of Scholarship this Wednesday!

Dr. Joe Erickson (Education)
"Service-Learning’s Impact on Attitudes and Behavior: A Review and Update"

In this presentation I reexamine and update the ongoing discussion regarding service-learning's impact on learners’ attitudes and beliefs. This presentation aims to discover whether the same caveats that applied to earlier attitude change interventions still apply to our pursuit of civically engaged learners. I also review the latest research in the social psychology of attitude change to see what impacts refinements in this field have for those employing service-learning for attitude change.

Instructional and Course Design Summer Stipends

Call for Proposals - Summer 2010

The Instructional and Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during Summer 2010 and completed by the end of Spring term 2011. Proposals are Due March 15 and funding decisions will be made by March 25. Faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit.

Program Description.
Funding levels are intended to provide a realistic alternative to teaching summer courses in order to re-direct faculty effort to design questions and have a direct impact on the effectiveness of mainline academic year courses. The program supports both design-based critique and revision of existing courses or programs and design-based creation of new courses or programs. The stipend amount is $4000 and the expected time commitment during the summer is one full-time month equivalent.

Submission, Selection Process, and Selection Criteria
You are encouraged to attend one of the two Design Proposal Guidance sessions offered in early March (dates and times TBA) featuring some previous Design Project Leaders.

Proposals are due by March 15, 2010 and should follow the requested format to facilitate evaluation and turnaround. The proposal form / guidelines are available by request to CTL and are also available in Stu Anderson's public folder (facstaff / physics / anderstu / ICD materials). Submit your proposal directly to the Asst. Director for IC&D at the following address: anderstu@augsburg.edu

All on-time proposals will be evaluated by the IC&D committee composed of the Asst. Director of CTL for IC&D, a member of the IT staff, a member of the library staff, and a representative from CFD. Decisions will be made by March 25.

Projects are selected on the basis of the overall impact of the proposed student learning improvements, including the need for the project and the significance of the proposed improvements.

Project Execution and Compensation.
Kickoff meeting. Awardees will meet with the Asst. Director for IC&D and each other during April before commencing work on the project as well as while the work is progressing over the summer. The purpose of the initial meetings is to clarify the expectations of the design process (working from learning objectives to evidence to assessments to choice of instruction) as it relates to each particular project, set timetables for subsequent gatherings and communication during the project, and identify fruitful connections to design and resource expertise within the library, IT, or other areas.

Communication during the project. During the project work period, the awardee will maintain communication with the Asst. Director and others as agreed upon in the initial meeting to report progress and acquire assistance with the design effort.

Final Report. After the project is completed, the awardee will prepare and submit a written report that summarizes the results the work, focusing principally on extent to which the learning objectives that drove the design process were achieved as well as the effectiveness of the IC&D process in achieving these results. In addition, the report should include a portfolio of all materials whose modification (before and after versions) or creation resulted from the project. Specifics on report format and content will be discussed during the project period. Finally, participants are expected to serve as resources in discussions for the benefit of others interested in undertaking design projects.

Stipend Disbursement. Release of stipend funds will occur in three parts: half to be released after successful initial meetings, one quarter after the design work is completed, and the final quarter after the course has run for the first time and the final report is received and accepted.

AISA Presents Augsburg's 2nd Traditional Powwow

Augsburg's Indigenous Student Association (AISA)'s
2nd Traditional Powwow
Saturday, March 20, 2010
Si Melby Gymnasium, Augsburg College Campus

Grand Entries (Start times): 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM
Community Feast: 5:00 PM
NO Admission fee - FREE!
There will be several vendors (craft/products and non-profit organizations) as well as a concession with Indian Tacos for sale by AISA.

Please note for those unfamiliar with a Powwow that a Grand Entry is the 'start' of a session where all the dancers come into the circle together. A session typically goes 3 hours and people are welcome to come and go throughout the day, however, if you have never experienced a grand entry I would suggest doing so. It is truly a cultural experience. We will take a break for a feast, in which all are invited, and the second session will start with the grand entry at 7:00 PM and will end around 9:30 PM. Within the sessions, there will be a variety of dances by category or

Augsburg hosted the first Powwow on campus last March, having close to 3,000 people throughout the day and hosting 14 drum groups and over 200 Native dancers. It was a huge success and we are looking forward to year #2.

Any questions or if you would like to get involved and/or co-sponsor this year's Powwow, please contact Jennifer Simon, Director of American Indian Student Services and Advisor to AISA at 612.330.1144 or simonj@augsburg.edu

Auggies Win 4 Titles at MIAC Indoor Track Meet

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/3/6/trk030510.aspx?path=mtrack

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- At the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference indoor track and field championships over the weekend, the Augsburg men's track and field team posted a sixth-place team finish with 62.0 team points, recording its highest team finish since 2004. The Auggie women recorded a 10th-place finish, with 37.0 team points, moving up one spot from their finish a year ago.

Augsburg's Whitney Holman (SR, New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS), Shanek Telphia (FY, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS) and Nick Ward (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the Auggies by capturing conference titles at the MIAC Championships.

Holman claimed the title in the 55-meter dash in an NCAA provisional time of 7.28 seconds, while Ward was a double winner in the 55-meters and the long jump. Ward posted a 6.46-second NCAA provisional time in the prelims and claimed the title with a time of 6.48 seconds. In the long-jump, Ward posted a season-best mark by nearly a foot, with a conference winning and school record leap of 6.96 meters (22-10).

Telphia captured the 200-meter crown in record-breaking fashion, setting a new facility record, meet record and school record with a time of 25.25. Her time bettered the school record of Augsburg's Tonnisha Bell of 25.26 set back in 2005.

Also posting top finishes for Augsburg on Day 1 were Adam Horkey (SR, Windom, Minn.), Matthew Schafer (FY, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) and Shanek Telphia (FY, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park HS). Horkey finished third in the 55-meter hurdles, earning all-conference honors with a season-best time of 7.94 seconds, while Schafer finished fifth in the 800-meters in a school record time of 1:56.24. Schafer's time broke a 15-year-old school record held by Roba Bati of 1:56.65. Telphia also earned all-conference honors for Augsburg, virtue of her third-place finish in the 400-meters, in an NCAA provisional time of 58.56.

Also posting top-six finishes for Augsburg was Brent Haglund (SR, Fridley, Minn.) with a fifth place finish in the 5,000-meters, Telphia with a fifth-place finish in the long jump and Shane Pantila (JR, St. Michael, Minn./SM-Albertville HS) with a sixth-place finish in the long jump.

Auggies Win Division III Wrestling National Title

Full coverage of Augsburg's national title:
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/3/2/wres030610.aspx?path=wrestling

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – With eight All-Americans and three national runner-up individuals, the Augsburg College wrestling team claimed its 11th NCAA Division III national title in the last 20 seasons on Saturday evening at the U.S. Cellular Center.

Augsburg finished with 110.5 points, 10 points better than second-place Wisconsin-La Crosse's 100.5. Defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) was third with 83.5 points, Coe (Iowa) was fourth with 76.0 points and Delaware Valley (Pa.) was fifth with 50.5 points.

Augsburg head coach Mark Matzek, named Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, is the youngest head coach to ever win a Division III wrestling national title at age 27, in his second year as the Auggies' mentor. Augsburg assistant head coach Jared Evans was named National Assistant Coach of the Year by the NWCA.

“It was nine individual efforts that created this team national championship," Matzek said. "I'm proud of each and every one of those guys that wrestled this weekend, and I'm proud of each and every one of those guys in this program.”

The final session of the tournament completed a unique first for the Auggies – the first time Augsburg has won a national title without an individual national titlist. The feat has occurred just twice before in the 37-year history of the Division III championships – Ithaca (N.Y.) in 1989 and Buffalo (N.Y.) in 1978.

However, Augsburg's depth carried the weekend and lifted the team to the national title. Augsburg had eight All-Americans – two more than any other school in the field – and its seven top-four finishers were also two more than any other school in the field.

Augsburg extended its streak of “trophy finishes” – finishing in the top four in the team race – to 22 straight years, the longest active streak of any NCAA wrestling program, regardless of division. Augsburg has finished fourth or better every year since 1989, and its 22-year streak is the second-longest top-four finish streak of any school in NCAA wrestling history, behind the 28 of Oklahoma State in Division I from 1929-59.

Augsburg scored eight All-Americans, marking the eighth time Augsburg has had eight or more All-Americans in a single year. Augsburg has had at least five All-Americans in every national tournament since 1989.

Three Auggies earned national runner-up honors: Paul Bjorkstrand (SR, Burnsville, Minn.) at 133 pounds, Tony Valek (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) at 149 and Orlando Ponce (JR, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS) at 165.

Jason Adams (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) placed third at 156, as did Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) at 197 and Zach Molitor (JR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) at 174. Josh Roberts (FY, Grand Forks, N.D./Grand Forks Central HS) placed fourth at 125, and Andy Witzel (SR, Fulda, Minn.) placed eighth at heavyweight.
