Speaking of Scholarship TODAY

Faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend today's Speaking of Scholarship presentation. Dr. Pavel Belik (Mathematics) presents!

12:15-1:15 p.m.
OGC 100
Hors d'oeuvres served

"Using mathematics in understanding and predicting physical phenomena"

Many physical phenomena can be studied by observing them in nature or in a lab environment. One might ask questions like "Why does this material behave this way?", "What is the reason for this weather?", or "Why is this comet returning every 76 years?" A curious person might change these questions to "How would the material behave if it contained more of so-and-so?", "What is the temperature going to be in the next week?", and "When exactly is this comet going to come back and how close will it be to the Earth?" Many of these questions cannot be answered by observations (or the experiments might be too costly). Mathematical modeling is a way to go in such situations. I will talk about my own research in mathematical modeling and my path to Augsburg.

*************************************

"Speaking of Scholarship" is a weekly forum for sharing the richness and range of research and creative activity carried out by Augsburg faculty and students. The series is sponsored by CTL and URGO.

Each week features one faculty or two students presenting their current research, finished research product(s), and/or insights on the process of conducting research or engaging in creative activity at a liberal arts college. The rest of the hour is reserved for informal conversation on audience questions or issues raised in the presentation.

Purpose

Augsburg values faculty research and creative projects and thus is making available this opportunity to support faculty work. The purpose of the Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grants is to support well-defined faculty scholarship projects that are nearing completion. The expectation is that receipt of the grant will make it possible for faculty to accelerate completion of a significant project.

Description and Eligibility

Three $4,000 Augsburg Summer Scholarship Grants will be awarded for Summer 2010. All tenure-track faculty who are in at least their second year of their tenure-track contract are eligible to apply.

Faculty who receive a Dean’s Summer Scholarship Grant are not eligible to teach more than one course during the summer.

Application Process

Please use the Research Application form that is available at the CTL web site www.augsburg.edu/ctl and attach a curriculum vita. Send the application and vita as an e-mail attachment to martin@augsburg.edu in the Center for Teaching and Learning no later than March 12, 2010. Instructional and Course Design Summer Stipends

Call for Proposals - Summer 2010

The Instructional and Course Design initiative in the Center for Teaching and Learning invites proposals for design-based course creation or revision projects to be undertaken during Summer 2010 and completed by the end of Spring term 2011. Proposals are Due March 15 and funding decisions will be made by March 25. Faculty who are creating new learning experiences or revising existing ones are encouraged to submit.
Program Description.
Funding levels are intended to provide a realistic alternative to teaching summer courses in order to re-direct faculty effort to design questions and have a direct impact on the effectiveness of mainline academic year courses. The program supports both design-based critique and revision of existing courses or programs and design-based creation of new courses or programs. The stipend amount is $4000 and the expected time commitment during the summer is one full-time month equivalent.
Submission, Selection Process, and Selection Criteria
You are encouraged to attend one of the two Design Proposal Guidance sessions offered in early March (dates and times TBA) featuring some previous Design Project Leaders.

Proposals are due by March 15, 2010 and should follow the requested format to facilitate evaluation and turnaround. The proposal form / guidelines are available by request to CTL and are also available in Stu Anderson's public folder (facstaff / physics / anderstu / ICD materials). Submit your proposal directly to the Asst. Director for IC&D at the following address:
anderstu@augsburg.edu
All on-time proposals will be evaluated by the IC&D committee composed of the Asst. Director of CTL for IC&D, a member of the IT staff, a member of the library staff, and a representative from CFD. Decisions will be made by March 25.

Projects are selected on the basis of the overall impact of the proposed student learning improvements, including the need for the project and the significance of the proposed improvements.
Project Execution and Compensation.
Kickoff meeting. Awardees will meet with the Asst. Director for IC&D and each other during April before commencing work on the project as well as while the work is progressing over the summer. The purpose of the initial meetings is to clarify the expectations of the design process (working from learning objectives to evidence to assessments to choice of instruction) as it relates to each particular project, set timetables for subsequent gatherings and communication during the project, and identify fruitful connections to design and resource expertise within the library, IT, or other areas.

Communication during the project. During the project work period, the awardee will maintain communication with the Asst. Director and others as agreed upon in the initial meeting to report progress and acquire assistance with the design effort.

Final Report. After the project is completed, the awardee will prepare and submit a written report that summarizes the results the work, focusing principally on extent to which the learning objectives that drove the design process were achieved as well as the effectiveness of the IC&D process in achieving these results. In addition, the report should include a portfolio of all materials whose modification (before and after versions) or creation resulted from the project. Specifics on report format and content will be discussed during the project period. Finally, participants are expected to serve as resources in discussions for the benefit of others interested in undertaking design projects.

Stipend Disbursement. Release of stipend funds will occur in three parts: half to be released after successful initial meetings, one quarter after the design work is completed, and the final quarter after the course has run for the first time and the final report is received and accepted.

General Announcements

Augsburg and MN FoodShare

In March, a month of dwindling contributions to food shelves, Minnesota FoodShare engages in a statewide effort to boost dwindling supplies in over 260 shelves across the state, (known as the “March Campaign”) recruiting congregations, corporations schools and civic groups to aid local food shelves.

Last year, Augsburg got involved in this campaign to support Brian Coyle Community Center’s Food Shelf in the Cedar Riverside Neighborhood. Thanks to the generosity of the Augsburg Community, we managed to exceed our goal in contributions.

Once again March has come and Augsburg is moving to support the Brian Coyle Community Center through its unique FoodLess FoodDrive --and we need your help. The FoodLess FoodDrive is based on the notion that the food shelf can-- through bulk buying power and discounts-- purchase food worth about four times what is donated in cash! Giving money directly to the shelf makes sure they are able to stock their shelves with food.

Augsburg is hoping to raise $2000 in cash. Faculty and staff members will receive an envelope in their campus box this week. In addition, there will be tables set up and events throughout the month.

Matching funds for the drive have been committed from the Central Minneapolis Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Every $2 raised during the drive will be matched by $1 from Thrivent.

For more information, please contact Devon Dodge ( Augsburg student) at dodged@augsburg.edu.

AISA Presents Augsburg's 2nd Traditional Powwow

Augsburg's Indigenous Student Association (AISA)'s
2nd Traditional Powwow
Saturday, March 20, 2010
Si Melby Gymnasium, Augsburg College Campus

Grand Entries (Start times): 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM
Community Feast: 5:00 PM
NO Admission fee - FREE!
There will be several vendors (craft/products and non-profit organizations) as well as a concession with Indian Tacos for sale by AISA.

Please note for those unfamiliar with a Powwow that a Grand Entry is the 'start' of a session where all the dancers come into the circle together. A session typically goes 3 hours and people are welcome to come and go throughout the day, however, if you have never experienced a grand entry I would suggest doing so. It is truly a cultural experience. We will take a break for a feast, in which all are invited, and the second session will start with the grand entry at 7:00 PM and will end around 9:30 PM. Within the sessions, there will be a variety of dances by category or

Augsburg hosted the first Powwow on campus last March, having close to 3,000 people throughout the day and hosting 14 drum groups and over 200 Native dancers. It was a huge success and we are looking forward to year #2.

Any questions or if you would like to get involved and/or co-sponsor this year's Powwow, please contact Jennifer Simon, Director of American Indian Student Services and Advisor to AISA at 612.330.1144 or simonj@augsburg.edu
