"Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes" Friday at WRC

The Women's Resource Center would like to invite you to Feminist Film Friday on Feb. 12th from 3:30-5:30 in the WRC (SVE 207).

We will be watching "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes." "Sparking dialogue on hip-hop and its declarations on gender, HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions.

The film also explores such pressing issues as women and violence in rap music, representations of manhood in hip-hop culture, what today's rap lyrics reveal to their listeners and homoeroticism in hip-hop. A "loving critique" from a self-proclaimed "hip-hop head," HIP-HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes discloses the complex intersection of culture, commerce and gender through on-the-street interviews with aspiring rappers and fans at hip-hop events throughout the country."

Everyone is welcome! Free beverages are provided. So please join us...relax, watch, and discuss. Hope to see you there!

SAAC Completes Fundraiser... With Duct Tape!

Photos online:
http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/2/8/saac020610.aspx?path=general

MINNEAPOLIS -- Thanks to the generosity of students, fans, and other donors, the Augsburg College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised more than $300 for Toys for Tots of Minneapolis. The SAAC group raised the funds by taking donations in the form of votes for the Augsburg faculty/staff member people most wanted to see duct taped to the wall.

"The Student-Athlete advisory committee was really pleased to be able to help those in need during the holidays and is truly grateful to all those who donated and to our volunteers who agreed to be a part of the duct taping," said Advisor Kelly Anderson Diercks.

"To raise over $300 in under a week is a great testament to the generosity of the Augsburg community. I am personally deeply thankful to all the student-athletes who helped with this event and especially to Allex Pollock for his involvement," added Diercks.

Assistant football coach Alex Pollock was the lucky (or unlucky) faculty/staff member to be taped to the wall during the entire first half of Augsburg's 71-68 men's basketball victory over Macalester College on Saturday.

The Augsburg College Toys for Teens drive collected more than 40 toys and just over $300. The drive was part of a conference-wide initiative involving the 13 institutions of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). As a whole, it was a record-setting year for the MIAC, collecting 380 toys and nearly $2,500.

3 Auggies Named as Baseball "Players to Watch"

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/2/9/base020910.aspx?path=baseball

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College baseball players Donald Blunt (JR, Richfield, Minn.), Craig Henry (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) and Joe Pierce (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn.) were among 20 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players recently listed in the NCAA Division III "Players to Watch" list by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The list of players to watch was compiled by Division III baseball coaches and included in the Jan. 8 issue of Collegiate Baseball, a newspaper that covers all levels of college baseball.

It's the third year in a row that Henry has earned a spot on the "Players to Watch" list. A three-time All-MIAC selection -- one of only two incoming seniors in the MIAC to earn All-MIAC honors each of their first three seasons -- Henry is considered one of the top catchers in the conference.

In 2009, Henry hit .395 (47-of-119) with 34 runs scored, 13 doubles, three triples, two home runs and a team-best 34 RBI. He had a .605 slugging percentage and .450 on-base percentage. Defensively, Henry had a .974 fielding percentage, with just six errors in 227 defensive chances. Henry threw out 18 runners attempting to steal bases in 47 attempts -- tops among MIAC catchers in overall statistics.

In his career (106 games, 105 starts), Henry has a .374 career batting average, with 86 runs scored, 34 doubles, eight triples, four home runs, 63 RBI, a .556 slugging percentage and .436 on-base percentage. He has a .972 fielding percentage (17 errors in 609 defensive chances), and has thrown out 45 runners attempting to steal in 126 attempts.

Also an All-MIAC selection in 2009, Pierce was at or near the top for the Auggies in most hitting categories, with a .team-best 410 batting average (48-of-117), to go along with a team-best 15 doubles, one triple, two home runs, 29 runs scored, 33 RBI, a .607 slugging percentage and .489 on-base percentage. Defensively, he had a .983 fielding percentage, with just four errors in 240 chances in his first season as a starting first-baseman.

An All-MIAC honorable-mention selection in 2009, Blunt continued his solid play as Augsburg's starting shortstop, hitting .364 (43-for-118) with a team-best 19 extra-base hits (nine doubles and team-highs of five triples and five home runs). He had 30 runs scored, 23 RBI, a team-best .653 slugging percentage and a .432 on-base percentage. His 11 stolen bases in 13 attempts led the team. His five triples were most in the MIAC in overall statistics, and his .653 slugging percentage and five homers were both fifth-best.

In two seasons (65 games, 63 starts), Blunt has a .313 career batting average, with 39 runs scored, 11 doubles, six triples, six home runs, 35 RBI, a .526 slugging percentage, .373 on-base percentage and 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts.

Under head coach Keith Bateman, Augsburg finished the 2008 season 20-18 overall, 11-9 in MIAC play. Bateman's teams have recorded 16 or more victories in each of his six previous seasons at Augsburg.

The Auggies open their 2010 campaign on March 4 at 10 p.m., facing Bethany Lutheran at the Metrodome.

Temporary and Permanent Housing For Rent

My partner and I would like to get to Hungary to see the family, and are looking for folks to sublet our home while we're away to finance the trip. Our travel dates are flexible, thinking mid-summer, and will depend on when we fill the space. If you know of someone looking for short term housing from 2-6 weeks, please let us know. Rent is negotiable. A little bit about the place:

1200 square feet, on south corner of lot with plenty of sun
Classic 1925 duplex just completely renovated
Completely furnished with homebrew on tap
2+ bedrooms
In Corcoran neighborhood, short walk to LRT stop, Powderhorn Park, YWCA, farmers market, and plenty more

Also, our permanent tenants are moving out in the near future. Looking to rent out 2 bedrooms, also brand new, for around $800/month. Great for students
