Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Parking Reminders

Now that spring term is underway, Public Safety would like to send a few reminders regarding parking for spring events:

Public Safety has an "Event Parking Request Form" online at http://www.augsburg.edu/dps/event_parking.html

Please use this form if you plan to have an event with 20 or more off campus guests coming to the college at anytime.
Communicating in advance and making plans for parking will ensure your guests have the best experience visiting our campus even before they arrive at your event.

Please allow a minimum of two weeks notice for us to make arrangements and accommodations that fit your event needs.

Those with smaller events (under 20) may request visitor permits from Public Safety dispatch, or electronic permits from parking@augsburg.edu.

Also, on Weekend College Weekends (friday evenings and Saturdays), visitor parking is extremely limited, $5 per vehicle in Lot L, and monitored closely by Public Safety staff.

For more information regarding parking on campus, please visit www.augsburg.edu/dps

As always, please e-mail parking@augsburg.edu with any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

LA Times Quotes Schield - Quantitative Literacy

LA Times quotes Milo Schield on Quantitative Literacy

Milo Schield, Department of Business Administration, was interviewed and quoted in an Opinion commentary in the January 31 Los Angeles Times by reporter Doug Smith. See http://bit.ly/aOaEpt

Here's an extract:

I've always thought that every aspiring reporter should be required to take a statistics course. If reporters were better versed in the subject, they'd be less likely to assume, say, that a high mortality rate means a hospital is bad.

"The hospital with the highest mortality rate in Los Angeles is probably the best one," said Milo Schield, a professor of statistical literacy at Augsburg College in Minneapolis and director of the W. M. Keck Statistical Literacy Project. It is more likely to handle the sickest patients, and thus more likely to have patients die.

Schield, who is about to publish a research paper on statistical literacy for journalists, said journalists are failed by an educational system that doesn't distinguish well between math and quantitative literacy, and they're not alone.

"You can be educated in calculus and be uneducated in quantitative literacy," he said.

Newspapers should always break large numbers down into rates that make sense, he said. Rather than simply talking about California's $59-billion education budget, newspapers should break that out as $4,900 per household (ouch!), not the $4.90 it would be if the figure were in millions.

Schield has created a course called quantitative journalism. * He'd like to see it become standard in all journalism schools. "Most stories get more support by having numbers," Schield said. "Knowing how to use those numbers is an art like any other."

[Unfortunately the reporter mixed up my Statistical Literacy course with my discussion of Cass Dalglish's Quantitative Journalism course.]

Ward, Telphia Named MIAC Athletes of Week

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/2/2/trk020110.aspx?path=mtrack

MINNEAPOLIS -- Augsburg College track and field athletes Nick Ward (JR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Shanek Telphia (FY, Chicago, Ill./Gage Park) were named the MIAC Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Monday by the conference office.

Ward ran an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark of 6.46 seconds in his first race of the year in the 55 meter dash at UW-Stout's Warren Bowlus Open. Ward finished first out of 43 competitors in the event, setting a new Augsburg school record and posting the top time in the MIAC in the process. Ward broke the Augsburg school record held by Matthew Shannon and Derik Thaden (6.49) set in 2001, 2003 and 2004. Ward also claimed a third-place finish in the long jump (6.31 meters, 20-8.5) and an eighth place finish in the 200 meters (24.16)

In her collegiate debut, Telphia finished first in the 200 meter dash at the UW-Stout-Warren Bowlus Open on Saturday. Her time of 26.27 was nearly a second ahead of the runner-up in the race and is the fastest time in the MIAC this season. Telphia also finished second in the long jump at the meet with a distance of 5.04 meters (16-6.5).

The Augsburg men's and women's track and field teams return to action on Saturday (2/6) when they travel to Arden Hills to take part in the Bethel Invitational.
