Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Document Shredding

Something to keep in mind when cleaning out old files...Any documents that are non-confidential can be placed in recycling containers located in hallways of each building. However, many of you have documents that are confidential and need to be shredded.

The Facilities Department has scheduled a document shredding company to be on campus Thursday, November 19. If you have any confidential materials that you wish to be shredded at that time, please box them up and mark the boxes 'to be shredded'. Then, submit a work request to the Facilities Department by Tuesday, November 17, and we will make arrangements for our staff to pick up these boxes from your office.

If you have any questions, please email Terri at adamsth@augsburg.edu or call x1566.

Book Orders Now Due

This year the bookstore is requesting book orders by October 15. While this may have seemed like a very early deadline, it is part of an effort to provide more used books for our students as well as pay higher prices for their used books.

Turning your book order in promptly allows the bookstore ample time to source as many used books as possible in order to offer the best value and save the students money. Since many campuses nationwide source from the same wholesale company, it is critical we get your order in on time.

Knowing early on what books are going to be used for the following semester means we can pay higher prices at buyback (up to 50% of what the student paid for the book) and source the books from used book distributors.

Because of your cooperation last year we paid students over $206K in buyback. However, we have a tremendous opportunity as this was $87K less than the amount we paid the previous year.

The faculty and staff at Augsburg College play a significant role in the success of this endeavor by getting the book orders in early. Final exam week last May we had received 65% of the book requests. With your help, we look forward to do even better this semester.

We are asking for Spring Day/Winter WEC book orders by October 15 and anticipate having 95% of the book orders in hand before finals week. Again, this may seem early, but please remember, the earlier the book requests are in, the better the outcome for our students.

Upon this due date, we will share with you, a list of book orders still outstanding so we can make sure that no book orders were missed as well as assist you in getting your orders placed.

Finally, effective in 2010, the Higher Education Opportunity Act will go into affect. One portion of this act states that institutions of higher education are to inform students on how they can save money on textbooks (including used books, cash back programs, etc.) at the time of registration. Submitting your book orders promptly, will assist in ensuring our campus is in compliance to this portion of the HEOA bill.

Once again, we would like to truly thank you for your help and cooperation in trying to keep costs down for our students. The solution to high textbook prices is faculty, staff and bookstores working together. We cannot meet these objectives without your help.

If you need any more information, please give myself or Alissa Nollan a call,(612.359.6492), email me at forgey@augsburg.edu or stop in the bookstore anytime.

Thanks for all your help!

New Print Accounting System: One Month In

In compiling the results of our first month of a new print accounting system, we are struck by some remarkable early results of reduced waste and new interest in alternatives to paper printing. As we prepare to distribute the first monthly charges to departments, please be reminded of the important changes effective October 1st, 2009:

A uniform per-impression price of 3.5 cents is charged on all distributed campus black & white photocopiers and computer printers. Color photocopies and computer prints are charged at 10 cents per impression (a double-sided copy or print job is two impressions).

The 3.5 cent per-impression charge is all-inclusive, so supplies such as paper and toner will no longer be charged back to departmental budgets. Instead, Central Services will bill each department monthly for actual copy and print usage. Departments will still order toner from cartridge care and paper from the copy center. The uniform per-impression price reflects the real, converged costs of photocopying and printing based on last year's use. For photocopying, this per-impression price is a half-cent reduction from last year.

Photocopy accounting will continue to be based on a numeric budget code entered, while computer print accounting is based on network logins (so, no need for printing codes akin to the current copier codes). This means that the accounting is portable; your department will be charged for any computer prints you originate, to any campus printer from any campus computer you use. The system will more accurately reflect your real use. Individuals will be able to check their personal printing usage online any time at http://iprint.augsburg.edu/quota . Departmental student workers will be able to request refunds online for prints they did while working which will then be added to the department's printing total.

Further information can be found at http://www.augsburg.edu/it/printing.html .
