Celebrate 20 Years Since the Berlin Wall

Today -- November 9 -- marks the 20th anniversary since the fall of the Berlin Wall. This momentous and unexpected event led to the end of communism in Eastern Europe and a new era of global politics.

Want to know more? Google <www.germany.info> and search for the article "Without Walls."

Still want to know more? Take HIS 352 "Modern Germany" in the Winter WEC trimester on Sunday afternoons. Open to day and weekend students, the course traces Germany's tumultuous past from unification (1871) to re-unification (1989), with special attention to the Third Reich, World War II, and the Holocaust.

And if that's not enough, consider the May travel seminar to Germany and Poland, offered through the Center for Global Education and entitled "The Aftermath of World War II." See Jacqueline deVries (History) or Bob Cowgill (English) for more information.

This specially designed tour includes visits to Oslo, Kongsberg, Geilo, Bergen, and Stavanger. While in Oslo, we will be hosted by Diakonhjemmet University College, an Augsburg partner school that offers a master's degree in value-based leadership. We will stay on or near campus. Faculty from Diakonhjemmet will lead three morning sessions that complement our travels.

The tour includes:
• Five days in Oslo—located on a fjord, surrounded by hills, and full of the excitement of a large, cosmopolitan city
• A journey westward by motor coach through Kongsberg, the historic Numedal Valley, and Hardangervidda (the mountain plateau home of large reindeer herds) to stay in a charming traditional hotel in Geilo
• A famously scenic train ride to the fjord village of Flåm and a cruise on the Aurlands and Naeroy Fjords
• Two nights in picturesque and historic Bergen on Norway's west coast
• A journey south by motor coach and ferry to Stavanger, designated "European Capital of Culture" for 2008. Stavanger was the main departure point for Norwegian immigrants to America. After an overnight stay, we will depart for home from Stavanger.

Cost: $3799 (includes airfare, accommodations, in-country travel, entrance fees during group excursions, tour guides, workshops at Diakonhjemmet, and 15 meals).

New Print Accounting System: One Month In

In compiling the results of our first month of a new print accounting system, we are struck by some remarkable early results of reduced waste and new interest in alternatives to paper printing. As we prepare to distribute the first monthly charges to departments, please be reminded of the important changes effective October 1st, 2009:

A uniform per-impression price of 3.5 cents is charged on all distributed campus black & white photocopiers and computer printers. Color photocopies and computer prints are charged at 10 cents per impression (a double-sided copy or print job is two impressions).

The 3.5 cent per-impression charge is all-inclusive, so supplies such as paper and toner will no longer be charged back to departmental budgets. Instead, Central Services will bill each department monthly for actual copy and print usage. Departments will still order toner from cartridge care and paper from the copy center. The uniform per-impression price reflects the real, converged costs of photocopying and printing based on last year's use. For photocopying, this per-impression price is a half-cent reduction from last year.

Photocopy accounting will continue to be based on a numeric budget code entered, while computer print accounting is based on network logins (so, no need for printing codes akin to the current copier codes). This means that the accounting is portable; your department will be charged for any computer prints you originate, to any campus printer from any campus computer you use. The system will more accurately reflect your real use. Individuals will be able to check their personal printing usage online any time at http://iprint.augsburg.edu/quota . Departmental student workers will be able to request refunds online for prints they did while working which will then be added to the department's printing total.

Further information can be found at http://www.augsburg.edu/it/printing.html .
